Eric Saub, 21, created a false purchase order from a nonexistent company and then electronically sent that order to Best Buy, Deschutes County Deputy District Attorney Kandy Gies said. Saub received the purchase request at work and began filling the order. He then loaded the merchandise into a U-Haul truck in September and hid it at his home, according to court records.
“You’re a pretty good con man,” Deschutes County Judge A. Michael Adler said. “You’re obviously very persuasive and very skilled. But you’re not going to con yourself out of this prison sentence.”
Saub stole four 2007 Polaris Sportsman 500 EFI’s worth $28,996, court records show. He loaded three of the ATVs into a utility trailer that he had bought in Linn County with another fake check. Saub then posted the ATVs on the Web site Craigslist.
Saub explained his actions Thursday to the judge, saying that he had become depressed about getting rejected by the U.S. military and tried to “satisfy” himself with “material possessions.”
Dr. Susan Dragovich also testified that, based on an April evaluation, Saub might suffer from delusional disorder, self-mutilation, severe suicidal depression and a “loss of personal identity.”
“This is a 21-year-old young man with mental health issues,” defense attorney Thomas Hill said in court Thursday.
Adler agreed that Saub needs psychiatric care but did not dismiss the weight of his charges, which include aggravated theft, identity theft and computer crime.
