My bet is on a simple robbery for the bike. If they find the bike, they will find the perps. Richmond definitely has a lot of bad neighborhoods; it is a city where you have to know where you are and avoid certain areas.

Or the perps thought they would have a simple robbery for the bike but it ended up in something more serious than they originally planned.

If you look at the map from this article http://www2.timesdispatch.com/rtd/news/local/article/MISS25_20100324-223206/332822/, Brander Street is just west of where his belongings were found... :(

Earlier I was going to write a post on the dangers of going into the wilderness alone, and how one should always have a trustworthy companion, even for a short trip; but evidently JD came to harm in the middle of town, possibly in broad daylight. He may have been assaulted, and then thrown into the river. If the current there is very strong, he may have drowned. But I wonder then why his body has not been found in almost four weeks? The fact that the pack was carefully hidden suggests that he himself expected to return to collect it.

did you all see the thread for him in the missing/support area? Lots of links/info there as well

It's not him. It's another missing gentleman, sadly.

http://www2.timesdispatch.com/rtd/news/local/article/remains_found_in_james_river/333562/

It does make me wonder if he could have stashed his own belongings because he wanted to wade or swim and explore the river, then got swept off his feet. I would think that a robber would have taken the backpack, as well as the bike. Then again, I don't know if he would have left his bike in order to wade. That's probably the kind of decision only his family would know as likely or not.

Nathaniel, 65, was last seen March 13 at his home in the 2400 block of Alexander Avenue, off Jefferson Davis Highway. The next day, police found his car parked on the Lee Bridge.

Relatives last week described Nathaniel, whose nickname was Bucket, as a friendly man and hard worker at his Fort Lee construction job. His wife of more than 30 years, Mary Nathaniel, said last week that she called her husband March 13 about 8 a.m. and that he told her he was going out for a little bit.

Richmond police Capt. Harvey Powers declined to give specifics about how the body was discovered in the water.

He added that no foul play is suspected.

But of course.

Suicide by drowning is all the rage in Virginia these days. :banghead:

For those who may not know about this area. Even though this area has been built up and is quite historic...I have always been told that if I were to go into that area to be very careful.

As the first article states - after the flood that lots of buildings were condemed. I'm wondering if this is still the case and if this is still a higher crime area as it has been in the past.

If things that I was told about this area still hold true - I would think that it's quite possible he could have been accosted and had his bike stolen...and then whatever else happened.

People have stolen and killed for less than a bike... I certainly hope that isn't the case here...

It could be because there's a feeling of resignation -- since his clothes and other personal effects were found adjacent to the river -- that he's in the water. However, the mystery is, what made him decide to remove his clothes and (possibly) hop into the river. It doesn't seem like that particular spot on the river is especially known for being a good place to swim -- or is it? He was captured on video riding away on his bike -- did he go swimming that afternoon? But who takes off their clothes in public? Something is definitely "off" in this situation.

VCU Police have confirmed a witness reported seeing a person resembling a missing exchange student swimming in the James River the day he disappeared.

Jonny Dorey, and exchange student from Britain, has not been seen since March 2. VCU Police said Friday that a witness came forward later to say they saw someone matching Dorey's description swimming in the river that day.

Missing Jonathan Dorey More>>Parents of missing VCU student Jonny Dorey issue statement

OMG...someone saw him swimming in the freezing cold James River on March 2 and is just now coming forward? Didn't this person think it was very odd that a man was out in the water at this time of year? Whether this witness thought the person was alright or not and was just swimming around I would have called LE immediately.

People just don't casually take a swim in the winter in cold water - unless something has altered their perception/senses...

ETA: http://www.wunderground.com/history...tml?req_city=NA&req_state=NA&req_statename=NA

It was definitely a cold and breezy day. No one in their right mind would have just been swimming for the fun of it.

It was even raining/snowing that day. Max temp was 44 degrees with average wind speed of 8 mph with gusts as high as 22 mph. .4 of snow was registered for that day.

And this witness does nothing... Unfreakinbelievable....

I just got a text from my daughter who is a VCU student. She said they found a body in the river. They have not officially ID'd the body, but they believe it to be the Body of Jonathon Dorey. THIS HAS NOT BEEN CONFIRMED AND I HAVE NO LINK AT THIS TIME

Oh, my goodness....I just now read that Jonathan was possibly spotted in the water? I cannot believe the witness did nothing....

Bumping for Jonny Dorey ...

Has there been any new word about his whereabouts? Anything??

I'm confused- he's wearing a plaid hooded sweatshirt in this picture.

Bumping for Jonathan.

I agree that it seems very weird that he'd go swimming in March.

Meeting someone? Skinny-dipping play that went bad?

Where is the bike?
