Has LE ever come out and said that the Stepdad is not a POI and has ben cleared? I know they said his CAR was seen in the area of the mall, but is that the most they said?

I'm almost positive they specifically said he was not a POI. Let me go back and check.

ETA: Here we go.

Stepfather is not a suspect in disappearance of 19 year old Katelin Akens. Surveillance video corroborates his account of events.

There's this:

Spotsylvania County detectives have determined that Katelin Akens’ stepfather did indeed take her to the Springfield Mall on Saturday
But he said police have corroborated the stepfather’s story that he dropped her off in Northern Virginia.
Pearce would not give details about how the story was corroborated, saying those are part of the ongoing investigation.

I remember when Jesse Matthew wasn't a POI, even though we all knew he was.
Just sayin'. :)
True, but they never said his story was corroborated. And, if I recall correctly, he ran before talking to investigators.

Are there any tolls around there that use Easy Pass that SD could have been traced through. And hey what not actually drive the route you would take in order to try to make a believable alibi but maybe Katelin never made it in the car or maybe was and was incapacitated or in a trunk with her luggage.

The only opportunities for EZ-PASS between origin and intended destination are the HOV/express lanes of I-95 north. On Saturdays they are open Southbound until 2pm and Northbound after 4pm.

Here's the map I put together a while ago. The spot for where the suitcase was found is believed to be accurate. That info came from http://wtvr.com/2015/12/07/luggage-...ld-be-key-clue-in-19-year-olds-disappearance/ and was verified by a local. I've marked the town where the SD lives, but don't have an actual address.

Unless there's new information, this article gives an approximate location of her luggage. And as far as SD, he's not a POI so we can't sleuth him for his location. Hope this helps.

The teenager's luggage was found scattered across the 6600 block of River Road early Monday morning

I believe it was determined that it was inaccurate reporting by the media sources that claimed his car was seen on video. The official statement from LE was this:

According to Captain Jeff Pearce with the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office, authorities have been able to corroborate that Akens’ stepfather’s car was in the area of the mall that day, though there is no surveillance video of Katelin or her stepdad at Springfield Town Center. Captain Pearce says cameras were not covering the area of the mall that the stepfather says he left Katelin. He would not elaborate on how investigators confirmed the car was there.

Right now, police cannot confirm whether Katelin was at the mall or if she even left Spotsylvania. Authorities have also not yet said that the stepfather himself was at the mall, just that his car was in the area.

Seems to me that they are being very careful with their choice of words.

I don't think anything was ever determined by anyone. All thier has been is conflicting reports that never really made sense. Nevertheless, unless LE makes a statement that SD is a POI, then KA was dropped at the mall on that Saturday.

The only thing that has been determined is that the Captain feels that KA's luggage on the roadside is what he called "suspicious", and that he has seen "something" before, and believes KA dissapeared on her own accord.

That said, whether true or not, the chances that SD would be a POI are Pertty slim.

Yes! There were a lot of inaccuraacies in the media early on, then no follow up or corrections. As far as what has been confirmed, is that the SD's vehicle was "in the area" of the mall. There was no mention of seeing the car [driver or passenger(s)], SD or Katelin.

police cannot confirm whether Katelin was at the mall or if she even left Spotsylvania

And a photo of a persons vehicles does not say who was actually inside or not inside. I am positive LE knows that! jmo

I wonder what was 'scattered across' means? That is a new wrinkle for me. Maybe the bag was not closed all the way? To me that would mean it was thrown from a moving vehicle and some items flew out. IMO

AndiLA, what would be the likely route for the SD to take from Spotsylvania to the airport? Would he have come anywhere near River Road? Do we know how far it would be to Springfield Mall area? I know where Woodbridge is and there is a marina there. I know where Fredricksburg is because there are some great shops there off of I-95. How far is River Road from I-95?

I do not mean to overwhelm you with questions! TIA for any you (or anyone) can answer.

I'm assuming whoever ditched the luggage knew the area. I would assume they were originally traveling on I-95. To get to River Road, the closest exit would be the Falmouth exit, just north of the Rt. 3 exit. It could actually be every exit from where she started in Spotsy, since Rt. 1 parallels exit I-95. I've used them all during heavy traffic situations.

But, coming from I-95 to the Franconia exit, you would go down to the second light to Rt. 1 (Cambridge Rd.), turn right and take the first right onto Fall Hills road. From there, you'd take another right in a modest housing development and end up on River Road near where the luggage was found. I would guestimate that it would be about 2 miles from I-95.

When we first moved to the area, I'd make that turn accidentally while going from Central Park (mall) and end up on River Road. Luckily for me, a right instead of a left would take me under Rt. 1, onto Caroline St and into downtown Fredericksburg. River Road does not intersect directly to Rt. 1. You have to know where you're going or be lost.

Sorry if this is TMI, this obviously sits very close to home for me.

She said it was "2pm her time" when she got the last text. That would be 4pm EST. Right?

I'm a little confused on the time also. Sounded to me like last regular/normal text was at 12:30 VA time, then strange text at 2:00. Nic<3, any chance you could clear this up for us please?

I wonder if Katelin seemed lost in thought or pensive at times for a couple of days before she left? Maybe re-thinking her situation?

IDK. I had a possible scenario all thought out and was determined to stick with it but now I just don't know.

LE needs to do an update!
