"A prominent linguistics professor told The Intercept that while the fighter was probably not a native English speaker, his accent is likely from either Canada or the northern areas of Minnesota and North Dakota. The degree of fluency indicated the fighter must have either lived for an extended time or been raised in North America, as opposed to being raised by North American parents abroad. The professor asked to remain anonymous due to this being a provisional opinion based on a short and low-quality segment of audio".

Today, it is Peter Kassig, a 26 year old AID worker from Indiana. This one seems different, and I truly hope that it does cause dissent in loyal ISIL followers:

"Burhan Agha, a 26-year-old Syrian, used to work with Kassig in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli, delivering aid to Syrian refugees before Kassig moved his operations to southern Turkey. Speaking by phone from Switzerland, where he is seeking asylum, Agha described his friend's killing as senseless.

"If I could apologize to each American, one by one, I would," Agha said while weeping. "Because Peter died in Syria, while he was helping the Syrian people. And those who killed him claimed to have done it in the name of Islam. I am a Muslim, and from Syria, and he is considered a part of the Syrian revolution."

"But the Isil threat to Mr Kassig has caused dissent from within the ranks of the jihadists' own community, with a number of Islamists speaking out in support of him, particularly because of his conversion.

Abu Omar Aqidi, a prominent member of al-Qaeda faction Jabhat al-Nusra, said in a public statement that he had been told Mr Kassig was the medic who treated him and other fellow jihadists. "

"Veryan Khan, editorial director for the Terrorism Research and Analysis Consortium, said that the light source on the men in the latest videos appears to be coming from two different directions — as opposed to one bright sun. If the video was made outdoors in natural light, the shadows behind them should be going in one direction. Instead, they converge.

"The hostages are visibly bothered by" the bright light, she said.

One of the hostage's jumpsuits flutters in a breeze, yet Khan said she believes it's from a fan. Wind in the desert would be noisy and affect the sound quality of the statements being made by the knife-wielding man, she said. It would also kick up dust, and none seems apparent, she said."

"ISIS' slick propaganda videos resemble trailers for Hollywood action movies.

ISIS now has the most sophisticated propaganda machine of any terrorist organization, said Matthew Olsen, former director of the National Counterterrorism Center.

"It turns out timely, high-quality media, and it uses social media to secure a widespread following," he said."

"Paris attacks: RCMP examines whether voice on ISIS recording is Canadian
Security experts, 3 linguists say voice has Canadian inflections and characteristics

By Dave Seglins, CBC News Posted: Nov 18, 2015 10:06 AM ET"

"Const. Annie Delisle, a spokeswoman for the RCMP, confirmed to CBC News on Wednesday that the police force is aware of media reports about the apparently Canadian voice, "and are following up."

On Monday, CBC News asked three linquistics specialists to analyze the recording, and all concluded the voice, speech patterns and dialect are distinctly Canadian.

Security experts and the linguists say the voice on the audio recording has telltale inflections and characteristics.

"The fellow on it sounded to me like he was … Canadian, and probably specifically from Ontario," Erik Thomas, a linguistics professor at the University of North Carolina, told CBC News.

Thomas, a specialist in dialect variations, has analyzed the ISIS recording and says he is 80 per cent sure the speaker is Canadian.

"There's a number of things that point toward Canada. His 'o' sounded more like 'oww,' which is typical of Canada," said Thomas. And also the word 'out'... he said like a Canadian, not 'owt.'"

Thomas said the speaker also had a feature known as Canadian raising in the way he pronounced words such as "vice."

The speaker in the English statement praised Allah, and issued a warning to France and "all nations following its path … that they will continue to be at the top of the target list for the Islamic State" of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

Amarnath Amarasingam, a Dalhousie University post-doctoral fellow who specializes in radicalization and terrorism, says the recording tweaked his ear as well.

Amarasingam, who has paid close attention to previous messages and their potential Canadian connections, says, to him, it sounds as if the man on the recording is speaking a neutral Canadian English without any distinct inflections or dialects characteristic of any particular ethnicity or region."

After listening to the recording, have to say imho, that the voice really does sound like a urban Ontarian accent, possibly even an English speaking (former?) Montrealer's accent.
Again, imo- it has the slightest touch of a Jewish accent, one that a non-Jewish person might acquire living or going to school in North York in Toronto, or perhaps Hamstead or Chomedy, Quebec.

speculation, imo.fwiw.

“I mainly listened for vowel variations because that’s where most of the variation in English is,” said Erik Thomas, a linguistics professor at North Carolina State University.

The professor was first asked by CNN to analyze the recording. He took detailed notes on words chosen by the speaker in the recording, such as “explosive” and “hand”.

“Everything he uttered seemed to match up with forms that predominate in Canada,” he said.

Certain vowels, such as the short ‘o’, were among the giveaways suggesting the accent originated in regions of either Canada or northern U.S. states.

But the real “clincher” that narrowed the origin of the accent was evidence of “Canadian raising,” a term used by linguists to refer to the way Canadians alter the sound of certain vowels depending on which consonant follows afterwards.

A good way to illustrate Canadian raising, according to Thomas, is to take note of the differences of pronunciation of ‘i’ in the words ‘side’ and ‘sight’."

What ISIS songs reveal about the group's evolution

"My immediate thoughts on that nasheed is the language used: English," says Al-Tamimi. He says the Islamic State has recently branched out into producing nasheeds in other languages, including English, French, German and even Hindi and Uyghur to reach out to non-Arabic foreigners to join the Islamic State.

"This one is what you could call one of the more generic nasheeds in terms of content, referring to conceptions of martyrdom and virgins of paradise promised for those who die in the cause of jihad," says Al-Tamimi.

And he says the catchiness of the songs serves a strategic purpose. "In regards to the melodies of nasheeds being catchy, it can help subconsciously imbibe the nasheed into your mind. The catchiness of the nasheed will help reinforce the messaging and indoctrination," says Al-Tamimi."

Are messages with instructions for destruction, in the songs?
Audio within link. Fwiw, imo, "soon, soon " also conjures up the English word, sun.

Wondering if the musical notes sung, are a sort of code, ie. the sounds correspond with a letter, word, geographic area or command?

"This nasheed translates into "Soon, soon". Al-Tamimi says this nasheed came out when a Jordanian pilot, Muath Safi Yousef Al-Kasasbeh, crashed in Islamic State territory. He was then burned alive in an infamous video that garnered worldwide attention.

"The lyrics go, for example 'a fierce conflict and you will see there will be battles in the hear of your abode'," explains Al-Tamimi. He says those lyrics parallel the motivation behind the Paris attacks, which "[struck] the enemy in the hearts of their abodes," says Al-Tamimi.

He adds that one of the problems that the rest of the world has to deal with is that this kind of propaganda can be difficult to counter. "It's very difficult to formulate an effective response that can match the level of content for instance or deal with the multiple narratives that the Islamic State employs in its propaganda," says Al-Tamimi."

"It’s like any other crime; there’s lots of little clues, and if you know where to look for them, they can help you solve the crime,” the counterterrorism expert told FoxNews.com. “It’s like looking for fingerprints, it’s the same thing.”

Voice analysis, in particular, could prove crucial.

“Linguistic technology is very good nowadays at matching voice characteristics,” said Ashraf. “If [the killer] has got a criminal background, there’s a very good chance that he could have been interviewed by police.” Voice recognition software could be used to compare the militant’s speech in the YouTube video to police recordings, he explained.

The expert also noted that the killer’s accent could prove valuable clues as to his identity. “There are speech experts who specialize in accents who are very good about identifying this information, both in terms of geography and ethnic group,” he said. “Your voice is partly shaped by your ethnic background.”

In the video, Foley’s killer speaks in an apparent British accent, possibly from London or Southern England. U.K."

Hi dotr! I didn't know this thread existed. I will try to take a look as the topic seems really interesting.

Maybe WS needs a good 'spring clean' so we can find threads a little easier.

I have a couple of little threads myself in 'News That Makes You Smile' and a blog on the current thread I'm working on. Don't have much time for anything else, though.

Love,

'The Girl With A Kitteh and The Dragon Tattoo'
