 I'm right there with you on the CarlK reconstruction/rendering

I feel like he ran into Burger King because of chest pains and it was the closet thing he could find. I don't think it had to do with lunch because the report says he said nothing at all upon entering and before dying.

i agree! i don't think it had anything to do with getting food. i think this was the closest place to run into because he knew something was wrong. I also don't think he was out for a jog in those boating shoes. I wonder if he had any money on him. I'm leaning towards no because he didn't have any ID on him or a credit card with a name on it or else we would have a name for him. Hmm

Sorry to be graphic, but maybe he felt he was about to soil himself and was trying to make it to a bathroom.

Isn't it common for a BM to go along with heart failure? one of my family members collapsed with a heart attack on his way to the bathroom, so that seems like a possible scenario.

(Edited for grammar)

I'm just trying to understand why he was in the parking lot in the first place and why did he have no money or id? I guess its the chicken or the egg question. Was he running into the BK because he was having a heart attack or did he have a heart attack because he was running. It has been said, and I probably agree, if you start to have chest pains would you start running or sit down and call for help from where you are? I would like to think I would do the latter but I guess in a panic I don't know for sure what I would do.

I was just thinking he was running and possibly had the heart attack as a result. If he was headed to the BK for lunch and was robbed in the parking lot maybe he was running inside to get someone to call the police and the stress of being robbed and running sent him into cardiac arrest. Just a theory.

Also, if he was rushing to the bathroom, then that would shrink the radius of the places he was running from.

I haven't seen a map yet, but as was mentioned upthread, he may have been coming from one of the gas stations. Are the stations super-plexes or little businesses with no public bathroom?

I know when I'm traveling, I prefer to make pit stops at fast food joints before I'll use a gas station's facilities. A matter of convenience and sanitation.

The gas stations nearby are major brands. I don't remember exactly, but when I looked with streetview it was something like Shell and Chevron. I think all major brands have restrooms. It is hard to tell on streetview, but I think both stations were less than a 5 minute walk away. I remember one being a stone's throw away. Of course, this was with a modern map- don't know if it was the same in 2001.

Are there bus stops nearby? Perhaps he was using the bus hence no need for an ID. Was he found to have any cash on him? Or empty pockets (suggests a mugging).

I guess in the instance of needing use the bathroom badly it would be what is the closest at the time. I checked NamUS for any items found in his pockets but see nothing listed.I agree cash in his pocket would rule out a mugging.Unless he just handed over the wallet and the thief took off.

If he had been robbed, that would explain most of the oddity -- why he didn't have ID, why he was running. And if he had a bad heart, the stress could easily trigger a heart attack even if the exertion didn't.

Kevin Belknap was 185-190 lbs at the time of his disappearance in April of the same year. The ensuing months until JD's death was plenty of time for KB to gain that weight, especially if he had a heart condition and/or diabetes. The summer months can worsen those conditions, so I think the weight discrepancy makes a whole lot of sense.

KB disappeared from Connecticut, and his vehicle was found east in Rhode Island. If he was leaving his life, it makes sense to me he would've abandoned his vehicle in the opposite direction of the way he intended to travel, in this case, VA Beach.

If he was hitchhiking (which he may have been if he ran out of money), that would mesh with the hitchhiking theory posted upthread, in which his ride took off on him.

I think KB is a likely candidate. The resemblance is striking to me. Would someone be willing to post a side-by-side?

I searched yesterday going both back several years and forward several years ( just incase there was a mistake made in the missing persons report.) and the only one I found that would seem to be a close match would be Mr. Belknap.

Theory 2: he was hitchhiking. His ride stopped for gas. He said, "I need some lunch."
His ride said, "Okay, but hurry, because I'm not waiting for you."

So he ran as fast as he could to Burger King. His ride finished gassing up and whatever else he needed to do. Our guy wasn't back yet, so the driver headed back on the road to wherever he was going to, not realizing his passenger was in trouble.

What would he have bought lunch with? He had no wallet/money.

Not to be rude about it, but bystanders and others in a more official capacity have been known to help themselves to things. I have heard of trouble identifying plane crash victims because no one has a wallet on them.

The upper lip and shape of the nose really look alike to me.

We know he didn't have ID -- we don't know whether he had cash in his pocket or something.

Good point that his wallet could have disappeared later, as well.

He might have been recently retired (last 2-4 years) and followed his dream of having a boat and traveling around the world from port to port. I know that used to be my retirement pipe dream; lots of people follow through.

A typical pattern is to sail around the northern coasts in the summer and make your way down to Florida or the Caribbean after the hurricane season, as winter gets closer.

2011 was very stormy on the east coast -- Irene was the worst of it, but not all of it. He could have put in for a couple of weeks to repair the damage.

And if the last his family heard from him was before one of the storms, they might think he was lost at sea.

I have a second theory as well, but I'm going to put it in a separate post just to make it easier to keep track of.

Correction: I put down storm information for 2011, not 2001. Brain fart.

I tried to do a side by side but I really don't know how.

The one difference I see is in the shape of the eyebrows. Although the Belknap image is pretty small and blurry. Too bad they couldn't have provided a better image on his missing sites.

I just spent some time (to the great consternation of my family) flipping back and forth between the pic of the Va Beach John Doe and Kevin Belknap. The front teeth look very similar, though I wish they had posted a frontal pic of the decedent.

I bet the delay is because there are no dental, prints, or DNA for Belknap available. If we only knew Kevin Belknap's shoe size (UID was 9 1/2) it would help.
As has been pointed out, the height is spot on and weight increase (and heart attack) could be related to frequenting Burger King.

Yeah my family seems to have something against morgue pics too!

Can someone who knows what they are doing blow up the side by sides and make them both black and white?

They look similar-- but while I was looking I saw some possibilities from Canada and other areas that fit the bill also. Unfortunately their missing pics were even worse than the UIDs pic.

With the exception of a few older threads, we don't put postmortem photos in open view anymore. Consequently, I removed the earlier post showing the John Doe.

However, you can put them in a post, accessible on a link (by surrounding the image code with "" and "" instead of "
"), as long as there is a postmortem photo warning above the link.

Here is the side-by side of Kevin Belknap and John Doe.
