My comment on the police report discussing Gabby's mental health - being manic wouldn't include violently sobbing to the point someone else needs to 'speak' for you.

Does anyone else think they might want to consider looking in the area of "The Zone of Death" if nothing shows up in Grand Tetons? It is located just outside Grand Tetons National Park, where they were last seen, on the Idaho side of Yellowstone National Park.

This stretch of Yellowstone National Park presents a unique loophole. It has been refered to by Brian Kalt in the Georgetown Law Journal as "The Zone of Death" when he wrote a piece called 'The Perfect Crime.'

Trials in Yellowstone National Park would be held at the federal courthouse in Cheyenne, Wyoming. However, in the 6th amendment it decrees that juries in federal criminal cases must be made up of citizens who are from both the district AND state where the crime was committed. This is where the loophole comes in, that area of the park in Idaho would have to be tried before a jury consisting entirely of residents of that area, and the trial would also have to take place in that area. Unfortunately, that Idaho portion of the park is uninhabited, making it impossible to make up a jury of residents of both the state and district. Any defendant facing a felony or misdemeanor charge would be unable to receive a constitutional trial which could not be legally punished regardless of guilt or innocence according to Brian Kalts writing.

I mention this because Brian and Gabby both seemed to be avided readers, they had books with them such as Lullaby, The Zodiac Killer, Fight Club etc. There is a great thriller book by CJ Box called 'Free Fire' it is based in this particular stretch of Yellowstone National Park and CJ Box even consulted Brian Kalt when writing his book. As it definitely falls into the genre that they seemed to enjoy reading and it was based in an area they planned to travel to, I wonder if one or both of them could have read that book.

Brian also seemed to be very aware of his legal rights and I wonder if it was premeditated could he have known about this strange loophole in that stretch of forest? Of course, this is all speculation and purely based on the genre of some of the books they were reading along with the very close proximity to where she went missing, it's a stretch but also an interesting coincidence. I hope something turns up or someone eventually cracks and her family can have some type of closure.
That’s incredible. Great find!

Unraveling Gabby Petito mystery: Legal experts say looking into her mindset could lead to bringing Gabby home | WFLA

Investigators describe this case as unraveling a mystery with many pieces to this puzzle.

It is a mystery in the truest sense because you have no idea. You can’t go into a situation like this assuming you know how it’s going to play out because, really, you don’t,” said private investigator, John Allman.

He says, right now, one of the biggest questions that needs answering is what was the mindset of Gabby when she was last seen.

“By trying to understand the mindset of an individual when they were last seen by people is critical because it can tell you if they have been looking to escape, to go somewhere by themselves,” Allman asked.

The former investigative reporter also knows that in asking the question, where’s Gabby, there are many possible answers.

Former federal prosecutor Stephen Crawford agrees.

The longtime Tampa attorney, now in private practice, says there’s a lot of work for detectives.

He also said since Gabby’s fiancé is simply a person of interest and has hired an attorney, the young man cannot be compelled to talk.

“This is a case that if it turns out, unfortunately, the way it’s looking, it’ll be prosecuted locally wherever they find what they find,” said Crawford.
How about what was the mindset of Brian when he last saw Gabby?

If Gabby wanted to escape or go off on her own she could have when this guy was back in Florida, call her parents for help.

I don't think she escaped if PI Allman above is suggesting that escaping might have been her desire or that it happened. She hasn't been in touch for some 3 weeks.

And what is the mindset of Brian now, that he refuses to talk, to help ....?

I was unfamiliar with Chuck Palahniuk but realize that he is the author of Fight Club.

Gabby had Fight Club related items sold from her online shop. So they may have shared the interest. Creepy but maybe not significant.
Yes. They apparently shared an interest in the author and both tried to monetize their interest in Palahniuk with related art/items in their respective Depop shops.

The chance of it being relevant is so very tiny IMO.

Okay, just looked the book up. Not really a serial killer book but more magik (and rather stupid):
Lullaby (Palahniuk novel) - Wikipedia

Ive read it.
The main character is absolutely a serial killer (he kills with verse rather than violence) and the book has very graphic depictions of n*crophilia.

It’s twisted. Most of Palahniuk‘s books are and it appears BL was a fan of many of them.

She's also reading it in one of her Instagram photos from June 2020 taken at a river in Georgia.

Hey. Long time reader/lurker…lifetime researcher.‍♀️

I’ve been consumed by this for days. For reasons I may elaborate in the future but for the time being…this whole saga and where it has occurred is so familiar to me.

The altercation at Moonflower on the 12th. I have no speculation on what precipitated it but, I strongly feel this is where things went seriously wrong.

from the police report and the (limited) witness (singular!) report that has been made public, they were arguing over a phone and/or possession of the van at Moonflower on the 12th. (Police report does not mention the moonflower specifically but does mention coordinates that exactly align with that location)

they left the moonflower and proceeded north towards Arches National Park where they were pulled over. Policeman took BL to Seekhaven (we’re assuming he went to another location for the evening from there) and GP was left with possession of her van.

…reminder this was the evening of August 12th.

The 12th was also the day the IG posts of both GP and BL became suspicious. His..referring only to himself with bad camera angles…and *her’s becoming rambling (typical of him, not her).

there’s also essentially radio silence on their SM between the 12th and at least the 21st.

something BIG….

… BIG.BAD.WRONG….

happened with them between the 12th and (at the very least) the 17th (when he supposedly flew from SLC to FL.

*edited only the word here’s to her’s.
I agree with much of your post. However Gabby's mom did speak to her on the phone on Aug 24th or 25th. Some said they even face timed. That is the last day her Mom is certain she was OK.

There were some texts later but Mom doesn't think it was her texting...

OR was it an entirely different guy w/ Gabby?

crazier by the hour indeed…
I'd really like to see LE release surveillance footage of their exit from the Fairfield Inn. That shouldn't muddy the case at all and at this point, it'd be worthwhile to ascertain that is for sure is Brian there with her.

The report does mention moonflower. I too think the time line is shorter. I’d like to find out if the mother last spoke - not text with her on the 25th as some have reported or if it was earlier. So far I’ve seen reports of the 23rd, 24th, and 25th. You’ll notice the police report clearly states that neither take medication for anxiety or another condition (it’s redacted). And seeing this irritates me bc I’ve heard at least one news report today state that they were “not taking ‘their’ medication.” A distinction with a difference. They need to be more careful.

I keep thinking the same thing every time I consider the weird storage unit story. Surely a dad devoted enough to move his entire life to be closer to his child would gladly help transfer her belongings across town. And even if BL had the only key to the unit, spending $40 to FedEx it to the dads makes more sense than spending hundreds to fly home mid road trip.

I guess that’s why I don’t think the storage unit was the real reason for BL jetting home.

IMO.

I wonder if Gabby and BL had just been at each other’s throats with escalating arguments that the storage unit trip was just an excuse for him to get away for a few days. Maybe his dad realized the conflicts were escalating and felt having them get space away from each other would be smart. I wonder if BL has had anger issues in the past that his dad was concerned about? Regardless of how they felt about each other back in Florida before their road trip, that is a tiny van and a lot of together time.

ETA: “at each other’s throats” meaning the figure of speech, not literally strangling each other.

I’m pretty sure LE has found some good evidence because naming him a POI so early on is very telling IMO.

Completely agree. They don’t just specifically name a POI because of circumstantial evidence…..usually they have already built up quite the case file on the subject….maybe not enough to bring to court. Not just yet. But enough that it’s very close. POI specifically named publicly is not a move done lightly by LE imo.

Certainly that is possible, and while one does not have to assume if he had killed her he would be rational, it seems a lot more rational to simply bury the body in the wilderness. Those are very large areas with some very far off the beaten path. Burying or just hiding a body there would be less risky than driving near 2,000 miles with a body

Who knows what he was thinking maybe having an anxiety attack but I don’t think he was in the right state of mind and still isn’t out of touch with reality. I’m sure he called mom and Dad freaking out needing their help. Why didn’t he leave her van there with her and fly home? this guy is still in hiding I believe only the parents have been seen coming and going.

Really. He flies home, she - what? - begs him to come back so he flies back, kills her and drives her van back to Florida? Or, she begs him to come back, he does, they fight more, decide to call it off an return to Florida, together, some big blowup happens and he kills her on the journey home? That's the only way him driving that van back there makes any "sense" to me.

I think it will make more sense when we have the specifics of his travels. That part of the timeline is still a bit murky - but I'd think LE will be all over it, soon enough.

Manic can range from the highest of highs to incredible lows - sobbing uncontrollably isn't out of the question, especially amidst a blow-up that quickly turned into a police matter.

theory:

Altercation late afternoon on the 12th at Moonflower. Pulled over at entrance to Arches NP. BL taken by LE to hotel, GP left with van. Both have their phones (as per police report).

so. No one goes into Arches. BL in hotel…GP in her van….

she goes back to Moonflower…where else is she gonna go?

She meets/remeets Kylen and/or Crystal. She still has her phone. She’s messaging with BL. We’ve all been there…fight with a SO…need to cool off…but still texting to reach out..

she goes with Kylen and Crystal the night of the 12th to their campsite rather than staying alone. (Side note: Been there…done that!)

Next day, the 13th, kylen and crystal go about their normal day but GP has to deal with BL. She goes to pick him up at his hotel and tries to tell him she’s done. He’s not happy but they talk. She tells him abt kylen and Crystal and that they’re fellow van people and that they’re cool. They go back to K and C’s campsite.

this is the 13th.

nothing is normal after this. Kylen and Crystal are dead.

Gabby doesn’t communicate with anyone between the 12th and the 21st.

Strategy behind the person of interest not talking in Gabby Petito case

“I think a lot of people think if someone asserts the fifth amendment, the right to remain silent, or the sixth amendment, the right to have an attorney, that they're hiding something” says defense attorney Greg Skordas, who has no involvement in this case.

Skordas says from a legal standpoint not talking has its advantages.

“I think it's smart for this attorney to say look my client is not hiding anything I'm advising him not to speak at this time and he's willing to follow my advice at this time” Skordas says.

Skordas says there can be a time when a person of interest will want to talk to police adding “he's not saying we won't give a statement ever maybe down the road there will come a time when there will be some quid pro quo and they'll talk with the government and say look we'll give a statement but we want some concessions as to what that will do and how that will be used in the case.”

I mean… we all understand the strategy of, and legit reasons behind, hiring a lawyer and not talking. But if he just left her on the side of the road alive, or if she left on her own accord, or he woke up and she was gone and he doesn’t know anything, he could be communicating all of that to the police through his attorney. There wouldn’t be the need for quid pro quo if he did nothing wrong. His attorney can tell the police what he knows or be present for interviews and intervene when the questioning gets beyond a certain point. There are ways to protect his rights while still cooperating, but I suppose that only works if he is innocent.

Who paid for Gabby's hotel room for the week? Budget travelers usually do not have resources for a week in a hotel, especially if they're continuing on the trip. If she stayed for a week at that hotel by the airport, wouldn't that be at least $100 a night with taxes?

In my travels out west with my bf in my 20s (ca. 1998-ish)..we used credit cards and limited savings of cash. We did fine. Not that the trip went fine…but…we managed.

Just now kind of catching up on this thread. I saw the article (posted below) yesterday, so I did a WS search & found this thread, so I am trying to catch up with the rest of you WSer's!
Call me Suspicious, but also trying to be open minded...

Here's the article, and, as usual, please forgive if it's a repeat:

Fiancé Named Person of Interest in Disappearance of Gabrielle Petito
Police spokesman Josh Taylor told reporters Brian Laundrie was home 10 days before his fiancée was reported missing

The boyfriend of missing Long Island, N.Y., woman Gabrielle Petito has been identified as a person of interest in her disappearance, authorities in Florida announced during a press conference Wednesday.
North Port Police want to talk to Brian Laundrie, 23, but have not been able to meet with him about what happened to Petito.
Josh Taylor, a police spokesman, told reporters that officers knocked on the front door at Laundrie's parents home on Saturday.
The department asked if they could meet with Laundrie and his parents, but were told to contact their lawyer.
Taylor said that Laundrie had been home for 10 days before Petito's parents reported her missing.

However, 'person of interest' does not have the same meaning as 'suspect'. What it really means, IMO, is someone who police are interested in interviewing, who potentially possesses critical information.

" A "person of interest" refers to someone who authorities believe might have information pertinent to a crime."
Ask Attorney Bernie: What does 'person of interest' mean?

So, use of the term with that meaning, is simply a tactic to try to pressure him into speaking to police.
