Brian Laundrie search: FBI finds apparent human remains in Florida

10/20/21

SARASOTA, Fla. — The FBI on Wednesday announced the discovery of what appears to be human remains along with personal items believed to belong to Brian Laundrie in a Florida park, potentially ending the search for the missing fiance of murdered blogger Gabby Petito.

At a brief news conference, FBI Tampa special agent Michael McPherson said the items, including a backpack and notebook, and the apparent human remains were found in an area that was previously underwater.

Laundrie family attorney Steven Bertolino previously confirmed the items were believed to belong to Laundrie. The Sarasota County Medical Examiner's office confirmed the agency was called to the Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park.

Laundrie's parents went to the Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park to search for their son, Bertolino said. He said the FBI and North Port police were "were informed last night of Brian’s parents’ intentions" and met the couple at the park.

"After a brief search of a trail that Brian frequented, some articles belonging to Brian were found," Bertolino said. "Law enforcement is conducting a more thorough investigation of that area."

The apparent human remains officials found today, as well as personal items of Brian Laundrie, were covered by water until recently, authorities said.

"Earlier today, investigators found what appears to be human remains, along with personal items, such as a backpack and notebook, belonging to Brian Laundrie," FBI Tampa Division Special Agent in Charge Michael McPherson said in a press conference.

"These items were found in an area that up until recently have been under water," he added.
The items were found near a trail that Laundrie frequented at a North Port, Florida, park, according to the family's attorney.

Throughout the search for Laundrie, authorities have contended with sitting water. Early in the search, the Sarasota Sheriff's Office deployed the Sheriff's Underwater Recovery Force, which consists of "highly trained underwater specialists," who were "called upon to search for evidence of crimes and victims of drowning, water accidents and foul play," according to the sheriff's office website.

Laundrie disappeared after his fiancée, Gabby Petito, was reported missing in the wake of a road trip through the Western US. Her body was found last month.

Brian Laundrie search: Human remains found near fugitive's belongings in Florida park | Fox News
The Laundries, who have claimed their son went to Myakkahatchee on Sept. 13, the day he was last seen, left their North Port home just before 7:15 a.m. local time for the environmental park, where two men in hiking gear – including at least one who later identified himself as a law enforcement officer – began trailing behind them.

The Laundries and one of the men appeared to discuss a discovery before the parents left the park, which was then closed to media and the public.

In a worldwide exclusive, video obtained by Fox News Digital shows the Laundries and the law enforcement officer huddling and speaking as the officer appears to show the couple an unknown discovery. The officer appeared to tell the parents: "I think we might have found something."

[...]

During the couple's time inside, Chris Laundrie could be seen continually moving in and out of areas of the brush. After a short while, he and Roberta Laundrie separated, with Chris and the two men moving into brush on the left side of the trail for approximately 12 minutes.

Chris returned without law enforcement, and the couple continued on. The Laundries later discovered a white bag and a dark-colored object after traveling through a patch of brambles at the edge of the brush at a clearing. They then could be seen putting the object into the bag and handing it over to the law enforcement officer shortly thereafter, who later took it from them.

[...]

On their way out of the park, the couple made a phone call and then received a call. There they were soon joined by the law enforcement officer, who could be seen patting Chris Laundrie's shoulder as he huddled with the couple.

The couple left the park at 8:45 a.m. The Laundries returned home shortly thereafter, and appeared emotional when confronted by protesters there.

Notes:

Brian Entin reports that per the Laundrie's attorney:

CL and RL met with police and went to one of the areas where BL used to hike quite a bit.

CL was on one side of the trail and two police officers were on the other side when CL found a bag that had some of BL's personal items in it.

Meanwhile, the two LE officers came across a backpack that belonged to BL, and further into the swamp right there, that is where LE discovered the human remains.
