Brian Laundrie Notebook: What Did FBI Find in Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park? – NBC 6 South Florida (nbcmiami.com)
[...]

Bertolino told CNN late Wednesday that Chris and Roberta Laundrie, who were at Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park for the grim discovery hours earlier, were heartbroken by the find. They have not spoken directly to the press at all -- not when Laundrie's fiancee Gabby Petito disappeared, and not after her body was found.

It's not clear how long the medical examiner's office is expected to take to identify the remains, which were described as "partial." It's also not clear exactly what was found. The FBI field office in Tampa confirmed the findings at a news conference Wednesday where for the first time in their six-week investigation they called Laundrie a person of interest in Petito's murder, not just in her disappearance.

In addition to the human remains, the FBI said investigators found a backpack and a notebook believed to belong to Laundrie near a path at the Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park. The agency added that up until recently, the items were underwater, and were only found now that the water had receded -- an investigative boon Bertolino had suggested would help search teams two weeks ago.

[...]

"This is the very area of the park that we initially informed law enforcement on, I believe it was September 17th, that Brian would be most likely in the preserve in this particular area as I know it, near the bridge," Bertolino continued. "If that water had cleared two weeks ago, perhaps could have circled back and looked again. Perhaps they meant to. Perhaps they were further, deeper into the park and never got back to this park because it is so near the entrance, Chris and Roberta went to this area first, and as happenstance was, they stumbled upon these items."

Morning from North Port. Investigators are back at the reserve and I am at the Laundrie home. Things are very quiet. We await follow up on remains recovered yesterday. Remember too that this is still an active investigation into the homicide of Gabby Petito. (foto corrected)

Strong probability that suspected remains found in Florida park are Brian Laundrie's, family attorney says (ksltv.com)
[...]

Law enforcement met them there and closely accompanied them as they entered the park, Bertolino said.

“As they went further in, Chris ventured off the trail into the woods. He was zigzagging in different areas, law enforcement was doing the same thing. And Roberta Laundrie was walking down the trail,” Bertolino said. “At some point, Chris locates what’s called a dry bag. The dry bag is a white bag, laying in the woods, say 20 feet or so off the trail.”

The dry bag was in some brambles and he didn’t want to move it because he wanted his law enforcement to see it, Bertolino said. However, Chris Laundrie “couldn’t find the law enforcement” because they were out of sight and didn’t want to leave the bag there with a news reporter standing nearby, so he picked it up, Bertolino explained.

“He did meet up shortly with law enforcement, they looked at the contents of the bag. At that time, law enforcement officers showed him a picture on the phone of a backpack that law enforcement had located also nearby and also some distance off the trail,” Bertolino told CNN.

“At that point, the Laundries were notified there was also remains near the backpack, and they were asked to leave the preserve.”

The suspected remains were found “about 2 to 3 miles inside the Carlton Reserve, or about a 45-minute walk” from the entrance at Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park, North Port police spokesperson Josh Taylor said.

Brian Laundrie case: Cadaver dogs may find more remains, experts say
“The problem is people don’t understand that dogs are not body finders, they are odor hunters,” Hadsell, who wasn’t involved in the search for Laundrie but has assisted in searches at the Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park, said.

“They chase the odor of human remains, and the problem is that there are times when odor is not making the best presentation,” he continued.

“In this case, the search conditions that they were in initially were really bad, so the probability was more in the 20 percent success rate because there was water in that area.”

But now that the area is dry and there is some breeze, Hadsell said it makes for “good sense cones” that “dogs can detect.”

The Laundrie family attorney Steven Bertolino says parents getting the news that your child is no longer with them is "sad under any circumstance." This comes after the FBI confirmed the remains found in Florida were Brian Laundrie.

Investigators also found clothing believed to be consistent with what Laundrie was wearing when he took off September 13, according to Taylor.

"The notebook to my understanding has not been opened. You know, that will need to be processed," Taylor said.

A source with knowledge of the investigation told CNN the notebook is "possibly salvageable." The source said the notebook was "outside of the dry bag."

"It had been clearly wet and they are going to use any potential means to dry that out before opening it," according to the source, who added: "They'll be very careful with it."

The source said it is unclear how the notebook ended up outside the dry bag.

When Taylor was asked about whether a weapon was found, he said he could not comment.

Rick Stafford, the attorney representing Petito’s family, responded to the news of the remains on Thursday evening and said the family would not be making any statements at this time.

“They are grieving the loss of their beautiful daughter,” the statement said. “Gabby’s family will make a statement at the appropriate time and when they are emotionally ready.”

Brian Laundrie's remains found in Florida, attorney says
[...]

The North Port police Thursday told NewsNation in a statement that they were 100% confident the Laundries did not bring anything with them to the reserve while searching for their son.

What I can say is that NPPD met the family at the park yesterday. We did not want them out there without our view. So we followed them around. Together at some times and within a few hundred feet at others. We are 100% confident the family did not bring any items, which were found yesterday, with them. We’ve been saying “odd” from the beginning, so nothing new there. The family did not locate or see the remains. The remains and items had clearly been there for some time.

The Laundrie family attorney Steven Bertolino told Entin his clients called him Tuesday and said they wanted to search the reserve since it was back open to the public. Bertolino says he called police and told them the Laundries would be at the reserve at 7 a.m. Wednesday. He says police met them there.

[...]

He lashed out at people who have suggested the timing of the discovery was suspicious.

“Do you really think the Laundries had skeletal remains of their son, you know, in a plastic bag and brought them to present to the [Carlton Reserve]?” Steven Bertolino said on “NewsNation Prime” on Thursday. “Do you realize how ludicrous that is, how aggravating, how maddening it is to even hear those things?”

For the first time, we are hearing about the moments before Brian Laundrie left his parent’s home on Sept. 13 to go to the Carlton Reserve. I asked attorney Steven Bertolino whether Brian’s parents feared Brian may hurt himself. His answer:
