Oct. 12, 2021 Gabby Petito's autopsy report (cnn.com)

Here's why the DNA samples from the Gabby Petito autopsy are important

The Teton County coroner who performed the autopsy on Gabby Petito said that DNA samples were taken from her body. CNN correspondent Jean Casarez said these samples could be "critically important" in the criminal investigation.

[...]

Casey Jordan, criminologist and behavioral analyst, said that where the forensic investigators extracted the DNA from her body could yield a "more damning source" of DNA from her attacker.

"Skin under the nails, trying to fight off her attacker, then that is more damning source of DNA than just a hair or fiber that may have been found on something she was wearing," Jordan said.

Petito's body was left in the wilderness for 3-4 weeks, coroner says

Teton County Coroner Dr. Brent Blue said there are many details about the condition of Gabby Petito's body he cannot yet reveal due to local rules.

[...]

"All I can really comment on is that is that her body was outside in the wilderness for three to four weeks," said Blue, when asked by a reporter at a news conference today if he could describe any impact on the body from the natural surroundings.

Gabby Petito's cause of death was strangulation, coroner says

[...]

The coroner said that the body had been in the wilderness for three to four weeks before it had been discovered.

Blue explained that it took a month to reach a final autopsy because officials were very "exacting" in their examination of the details.

He noted that they were also waiting for other specialists to arrive to help with this investigation and for toxicology to be returned.

"It was just a matter of making sure we had everything right," he told reporters.

A look at the significance of Gabby Petito's cause of death (winknews.com)
[...]

The coroner’s report called Petito’s death by manual strangulation.

“You would have had a fracture of the hyoid bone or fractures and or fractures of the thyroid cartilage,” Dr. Cyril Wecht explained.

[...]

“Changes you can see and with the naked eye as well as microscopically,” Wecht said. “Those would be gone from three four weeks of exposure to the elements.”

[...]

The coroner said law enforcement took DNA samples of Gabby. Kolko says those tests are critical, especially if Gabby fought back.

“That may show who the last person was that she was next to and who she fought with while she was being strangled, and if that’s Brian, that even seals the case more,” Kolko said. “It’s likely that they have enough information to now, once the DNA is analyzed as well as the rest of the information from the coroner’s report, to likely get a murder warrant on Brian Laundrie.”

Gabby Petito Died By Strangulation, Wyoming Coroner Finds – CBS New York
Forensic experts say the manner of death suggests a crime of passion.

“It’s a very close-in way of killing somebody. It’s not like shooting somebody from a distance. This is very personal, and it does tell a story about anger and hostility,” said Lawrence Kobilinski, a forensic scientist with the John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

Gabby Petito was strangled. Experts say it's common in intimate partner violence (usatoday.com)
Assaults that seek to deprive someone of oxygen are more common than most people realize, experts say. A woman who has been assaulted in such a way by a partner has a sevenfold risk of being murdered by that partner, according to Dr. Eve Valera, an associate professor at Harvard Medical School who studies intimate partner violence and brain injury.

BREAKING NEWS: Laundrie family attorney reacts to news Gabby Petito was strangled (foxnews.com)
[...]

Two apparent protesters appeared to try to confront Chris and Roberta Laundrie at their North Port home just after 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, banging on the door repeatedly.

One person from the pair, a man, could be heard shouting, “Come on, dirty Laundries,” “Come on, you guys like to strangle people,” “We’ll be back,” and “Speak up soon.”

After they left, Chris Laundrie briefly stepped into the screened section twice, including one time when he appeared to lock the door.

The protestors will be out in full force I think today...in front of the Laundrie home !!!

Jossie Carbonare WPBF25 on TwitterWe spoke with PBC state attorney Dave Aronberg about #GabbyPetito’s autopsy results and he says strangulation could point to a domestic incident based on what we know about the fight between #BrianLaundrie & Gabby in Moab Utah weeks before her body was found.

He also says that if #BrianLaundrie’s DNA is not found on #GabbyPetito’s body due to the time it spent exposed to the elements, prosecutors could still use other evidence.

Today marks one month since #BrianLaundrie’s parents say they last saw him before he left on a hike & never returned. I asked the family attorney where the Laundrie’s stand with Brian still no where to be found & a person of interest in the #GabbyPetito case. His response:

Wyoming coroner: Gabby Petito's cause of death was strangulation
[...]

When KSL’s Chopper 5 flew over the crime scene that day, a photographer spotted the remains above ground, but covered, possibly by a blanket.

Hiking shoes were on the ground next to the body.

[...]

Morgan came away with distinct impressions from this scene.

“This was quick. This was not sitting here for five or six hours, trying to figure out how to conceal a crime,” he said.

He also didn’t notice any obvious signs of a struggle on the ground.

[...]

Morgan said it will ultimately take forensic evidence to place Laundrie at the scene.

With Petito strangled to death, he said that evidence could be any possible fingerprints or DNA left behind.

[...]

Among the questions Morgan hopes can be answered eventually by evidence on the ground: Why there is no sign of conflict at the scene?

Was the body moved? In which case, he asks, why were there no signs of, say, dragging?

Why were hiking shoes just left there and not buried or disposed of?

Former FBI agent: Suspect in Gabby Petito homicide may already be named behind closed doors (wpbf.com)
[...]

Kaplan said now that Petito’s death has been ruled a homicide and the cause has been determined as strangulation, a suspect may already have been named behind closed doors.

“That piece of information, I would bet, has gone into grand jury - there is now a sealed indictment for the apprehension for the person who is responsible for the death of Gabby Petito,” Kaplan said.

Details surrounding possible warrants and charges, however, likely won’t be released until an arrest is made.

“They would tend to not want to unseal that,” said Kaplan.

Brian Laundrie attorney Bertolino slams John Walsh after ID special on Gabby Petito case | Fox News

"I absolutely believe that his family is helping him stay on the run," said Walsh, who also hosts "In Pursuit with John Walsh" on ID.

Bertolino snapped back at such speculation.

"Dusty relics like that Dog and John Walsh need a tragic situation like this so they can clear the cobwebs off their names and give their publicity-hungry egos some food," Bertolino told Fox News Digital, also taking aim at Duane "Dog" Chapman, the reality TV star and real-life bounty hunter who entered the search for Laundrie late last month.

Through a spokesperson, Walsh said he had no comment on the lawyer’s attack, while Chapman issued a sharp response of his own.

"It’s ironic that Mr. Bertolino would criticize the people trying to find Brian Laundrie, unless perhaps he doesn’t want him to be found," he said
