The sitting on the porch eating without shirts would not bother me because my neice did that with her toddler triplets. When it was colder, they ate in the kitchen. She did it because it was easier to clean. The clothes did not have stains, wash cloth to the kids and hose to the patio.
So either they ate with their shirts on and needed stains removed or they took them off so they would not have stains.
In February, it gets cold in northern Florida after dark. Not just occasionally, but regularly year in and year out. These are some misc. images from the days and evenings immediately after Haleigh disappeared. Notice that every person in every image has a coat or jacket/sweater on:
