2010.07.26 Grand Jury begins

I wonder if it's meant for TH - a way of saying you're going down, and I'm not? Or maybe it's meant for everyone, that TH is going down, but Dede isn't? I can't help but think she's not worrying because she's not going to face consequences for whatever her role was in what happened to Kyron.

ETA: I really hope it's not that she and TH are going to get away with this somehow, even though she testified in front of a Grand Jury, like she's telling TH, don't worry, I didn't say anything you have to worry about. That is scary to me.

Yeah, I was going to say what you added at the end--that perhaps she is smiling because she thinks they are both untouchable and will be fine. Not that she would necessarily be correct, but that she feels that way.

Wow, just catching up on new news in Kyrons case, I hope this brings some answers soon !! WHERE IS KYRON???

O I know. That little dear needs to be found and returned home. What a heartache. I hope the GJ is level-headed, fair & outraged as they can be against this injustice done against he, his parents and the murder for hire plot against his Father.

I thought the smile was strange
reminds me of Tammi (forget her last name) in the Gabriel Johnson case

Glad to know I'm not the only one and I really hope it was just a nervous smile with all the reporters and their mikes in front of her every step but...something just seemed off. Her lawyer sure didn't seem to exude that same confidence when interviewed...his demeanor seemed less than that.

My brother was arrested BEFORE I testified in front of a grand jury, so I'm not sure that the GJ is needed in order to arrest someone.

In my personal experience, my brother had been sexually abusing me for years and I told a teacher about it when I was 14 years old. My brother, who is 5 years older than me, was arrested at the college he attended. I was interviewed multiple times by police with child protective services there, as well. I had a deposition taken. Then I got subpoenaed for the GJ. I testified and my brother was convicted of a class A felony & sentenced.

This was in Washington County (Beaverton... GJ was in Hillsboro) ~ adjoining county to Multnomah.

So, in my experience at least, the arrest came before the grand jury testimony and it never led to a trial but it did lead to a conviction. So... color me :waitasec: as to why some grand jury testimony leads to an arrest/trial and some leads directly to a conviction. I don't understand it at all!

I think GJ in this case is because it is going to be a capital crime and is required in Oregon.

OMG OMG!! ME too! Me Too!! Just like the "wanna be" adoptive mother of baby Gabriel! Reminds me so much of Tammi Peters(I think thats the last name) she ended up arrested for forging adoption papers...

So very very sad, Where are all the babies "disappearing" to? Kyron, Gabriel, Haleigh, Adji, Madeline(& thats just to name the very few off the top of my head) How can they disappear with not so much as a trace left behind of where they could be? And NO ONE even being held responsible for these horrendous crimes.

The comment about soliciting information is interesting. IMHO, this could turn out to be nothing more than a play by the prosecution to compel DS to tell what she knows or what they think she knows.

No offense, but I must disagree with you again. I have been involved with our state prosecutor's office here (in WA) for over 15 years, I'm quite familiar with Oregon's laws as well, and there is no such thing as a "play by the prosecution" to compel anyone to tell what they know. NOT when it comes to a Grand Jury!

If we are going to be mentioning hating kids and reading articles lets get some links in here. Please and thanks...... If you can't link you cannot bring the information into the discussion. I'm seeing way too much of this.

Oh I wanted to say that Soooooooooo bad. Nope, you're not alone. I wonder if she feels above it all so to speak because her Dad's a law enforcement officer (which I have only read on these boards).

She's got nerve. :snooty:

Huh?

She's walking along with her attorney, not answering questions (which she is forbidden to do related to the GJ in any case).

I would describe that DDS smile as "contemptuous"... don't know why... but she has that sneering look of contempt on her mug... and when watching the video... she seems even more full of smug contempt when her atty stops to make a comment.

moo of course.

DS has probably taken a poly and been questioned at length by LE. She probably signed a sworn statement at the end of the LE interview. I can see where today at the Grand Jury appearance she was maybe sworn in, shown a copy of her sworn statement, and asked if she had anything to add to that. Then she could be excused and the Grand Jury could review all of the evidence and statements, and compile a list of questions they would like to ask any witnesses. They would first have to see all evidence and sworn statements before even knowing what questions to ask, right?

I can see why there would need to be more than one day to render an inditment.

Well, I'm not seeing a "big smile" or snottiness or smugness or whatever. I do see people walking into the sun. I see people surrounded by the media asking questions they know the person can't answer.

Just curious, though. I may be completely clueless (wouldn't be the first time), so I wonder what would have been "appropriate" behavior and facial expressions from her upon leaving the courthouse.

ETA: I also wonder what the reaction to her body language and expressions would be if it were to come out that she tossed Terri directly under the bus.

Interesting that, although they are both fitness enthusiasts, both appears to have put on weight in recent years. I thought about TH having that happen perhaps because of baby weight and also if she had become depressed after the birth. But I wonder what might have prompted the change with DDS.

True that. I meant that they look alike from the neck up. I have no idea what DeDe looked like before Terri became newsworthy. But what you say as far as Terri's putting on weight could very well be. Not the baby weight----that's a given, but maybe becoming depressed or some other problem which would cause either weight gain or her maintaining the baby weight and not losing it or caring to lose it. Yes, interesting, as you say.

I've just been thinking about a personal experience of mine that involved the courthouse and the media (high-profile) and I have to say that Dede's smile could be just a nervous/idk what to do/how do they expect me to behave kinda smile. In my case, I became all too aware of how important it was to portray a certain image to the public and it's bloody nerve-wracking knowing that at any second, someone could misinterpret your behaviour. Anyway, I'm thinking I probably had a few awkward and strange-looking smiles on my face at times. I should really withhold judgment on her smile (not that it's evidence of anything anyway lol) and try to be more fair-minded and objective. I'm going to try & remember that from now on when I post.

Good point. How do we know that they haven't been meeting for awhile now? I know her lawyer said it was preliminary, but preliminary to what? Maybe they've been hearing information, and now they're getting ready to deliberate on what exact charge they will hand down? It could be that they have the info they need, and just needed to hear what she had to say. And she might not have had to say much about her part in all of this. She may have had a small, brief part for all we know in Kyron's disappearance. I only remember George testifying in front of the Grand Jury for Casey Anthony. I don't know for how long, but I know she blames his testimony alone for where she is today, that's for sure.

Excellent post, Aedrys!
I have this 'sneaking suspicion' that this is NOT the first Grand Jury inquiry re: the Kyron case. Remember, it's not just a "one off" meeting. There are sometimes half a dozen or more GJ proceedings that happen before the press even gets wind of it!!! :)

(((BUMP)))

I 100% agree. Individuals who receive a subpoena to appear before a Grand Jury are NOT there to simply have "a little Q & A" with prosecutors.
GJ subpoenas are not just handed out to any Joe Schmo who "may" have information!!! Rest assured, the LE detectives had to "bring the goods" to prosecutors in order to have them initiate a subpoena for DeDe to appear before the GJ.
*This is not about some kind of kind of game or ploy by the prosecutors. They are dead serious about this case!*

Thank you! From what I know of Grand Juries this is a big deal and not just a fishing expedition or some kind of harrassment.

Stavely also disputed allegations that Kaine Horman and Desiree Young made last Thursday, contending that Spicher was impeding the investigation by not cooperating and advising others not to talk to law enforcement.

"Well, the fact of the matter is she has been cooperating,'' Spicher's lawyer said. "She met with detectives in the case for three-and-a-half hours, and has had several follow-up conversations with detectives. She's cooperated fully. And frankly, the suggestion that she has urged others not to cooperate is absolutely false.''

Well, I don't mean to be sarcastic, but what do you expect her paid-for attorney to say? :waitasec: Why would they have to subpoena her for the Grand Jury if she was cooperating fully?

Respectfully, I don't think appearing before a Grand Jury has anything to do with whether a witness is cooperative or not.

I don't understand why so many are completely shocked :(

Days ago, the cousin gave a few vague details of her having to testify before some jury on Monday. He obviously did not really understand, but it was relayed to him from people who did know. That's one reason I found him believable. (And absolutely hilarious btw, he would be a BLAST to hang out with.) And don't forget the long hours that Terri spent at her lawyer's office recently. That was a pretty big clue also.

Anyway! I'm not actually sure the Grand Jury is good news. Deedee wouldn't cooperate and talk to police, just as Desiree and Kaine said. So she was compelled to do so.

That makes me think they really needed to find out what she had to say, as if it may direct their next step. She may not have the goods to deliver, as much as I would like to think she does. (Either way, its still sad a person has to be subpoenaed to tell what they know in a case of a missing child.)

I have to say again, this is making me think of JonBenet Ramsey. I hope the grand jury can get to the bottom of things.

Is the grand jury even done? Or are there more people who also need to testify?

KeyboardCat: I'm not shocked at all. Not just because of the rumors but because something like this was inevitable. LE isn't going to sit back and play cat and mouse games when a child is missing. I'm actually very encouraged by this development. :woohoo:

Respectfully, I don't think appearing before a Grand Jury has anything to do with whether a witness is cooperative or not.
I understand that, but we are talking about DeDe this time and not every witness. JMO

I don't take a defense attorney's word for what his client has or has not done. His job is to build her up and "defend" her.

I fear this could be a long process...

BTW, there have been 64 arrests already today in MC. Yikes.
