I remember in the Scott Peterson case that the jury could recommend death and that the judge made the final decision BUT if the jury decided LWOP that the judge could not impose a death sentence.

Is it different in Florida?

Yes, it is different in Florida.

In FL the judge can overrule the jury's decision, either way. If the jury comes back with a recommendation of LWOP, HHJP could impose the DP if he chose to do so. Likewise, if they recommended the DP he can reduce the sentence to LWOP.

Same in Alabama. In fact that happened here very recently. LWOP was overruled and changed to the DP.
