Why the heck did the state call this witness? He is terrible and it seems like he was not prepped at all. The state would have been better without him. He certainly does seem more like a defense witness.

Okay, Ashton now reeling this in a bit. At this point, the witness would not have expected any choloroform due to it's evaporation speed. He was surprised to get any reading. (So, we can conclude there was a ton of it before evaporation process - hope the jury gets that too).

Baez is doing an excellent job with this witness.
- he has established that the leval of cloraform found is consistant with cleaning fluid.
- the witness has directly contradicted Dr Vass's testimony regarding "shockingly high" levals
- regardless of your personal feelings regarding him, this is very effective. The question is - will he quit while he's ahead.

But Dr. Vass tested air, and chloroform, IIRC, is volatile and will go into gas. This witness tested carpet, or objects.

So, the fact he was able to detect any chloroform at that stage, shows that initially there had to have been a very substantial amount.

JA asks the witness if he has ever been asked to look for solid dry chloroform. He says he cannot remember a case where he did.
JA asks what might be a high or low amount of chloroform of a carpet sample. Witness says he would have to do a validation study to determine that.
jA asks how the spare tire cover came to him.
specifally how it was packaged.
Witness says inside a cardboard box.
JA asks what effect that would have on a volatile substance like chloroform.
Witness says it would leak out.
JA asks is he surprised he found any chloroform on the item at all. Witness says yes. he was very surprised to get a result for chloroform at all,
JA drives home the point he was still able to detect the chloroform despite this fact .

JA making a point with the control -- that was certainly going to be higher in any case and in no way is it a reasonable comparison in the sort of terms JB tried to set yesterday with the cars.

This guy tested for chloroform on objects that have been left open to air. He was surprised to find any chloroform at all in light of this fact. In his experience, any chloroform that would have been on these objects would have long dissipated before he tested them.

The cans preserved what was in the air. Nothing was allowed to dissipate into the open environment.
