This is not true! "Pre-term" is a large category. Whether a NICU stay is needed depends on the individual baby. Many, many go home with the mother. It all depends on how "pre" the baby arrived.

two of my four were premies born via emergency c-section - one needed a little oxygen and was monitored for heart problems while I was in recovery but neither went out to NICU....one was 4 1/2 weeks early and the other exactly 4 weeks early.

1st boy - 4 weeks early 5lb
2nd boy- 3 weeks early 5lb 9lb
3rd (girl) 2 weeks late = 7lb 14oz (never been early a day in her life since!)
