The spring Commencement Ceremonies will be held at University of Idaho on Saturday, May 13 at 9:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. (Pacific time). I wonder if Kaylee, Maddie, Xana, and Ethan will receive posthumous degrees and if they do, if it will be announced publicly at the Commencement ceremonies or if the University will not call their names but list the posthumous degrees along with the list of graduates that they post on their website about two months after Commencement.

At our university, we only call names of students who walk across the stage to receive their diplomas (a temporary facsimile, that is) during the Commencement ceremonies.

The two Commencement ceremonies on May 13th at the University of Idaho will be livestreamed at

@jepop @girlhasnoname @katydid23 @SophieRose
Thank you for the thought provoking and detailed responses to where the car was parked and the ease/difficulty in getting from it to the house. The video @SophieRose mentioned might show a gentler slope from the road down to the house. It is really hard to tell, but at least it doesn't look as challenging (although I'm not really sure). I have seen clips and photos of LE standing up in the parking area and one where it looks like an officer came out of the wooded area. I'm sure LE has a fairly good idea where he may have cut through. MOO.

The main reason I'm fixating on this is because of the time line. The PCA puts security camera audio of the dog barking, the loud thump and possible voices or whimpers at 4:17am, and BK's car was caught on camera speeding away at 4:20am. If it took 3 minutes for him to leave, then one would think it took about the same amount of time for him to leave his car and enter the house. Although he could have gotten there faster since he didn't have to worry about taking off or covering bloody clothes. MOO. Obviously the longer he was able to walk on pavement the faster he could have been.

All that said I'm still not entirely convinced that 3 minutes would be enough time coming or going.
Just going back a ways to the question about ease of access to the rear of the house from the south-east. I was reading a fox news article and came across this image which I am posting below. It is taken from some distance post-crime. On Nov 13th there would have been more foliage, but it does show decent space for access along the eastern wall of 1122 and a relatively unimpeded slope up to the road above. MOO

I don't know what they'll do. The UI policy says O - Miscellaneous < University of Idaho.

Posthumous undergraduate degrees can be awarded if the student has completed all but 30 hours. That leaves EC out since he was still classified as a freshman. Xana was a junior, I believe, and that likely would rule her out too especially if she was a first semester junior when she died. Only MM and KG were in their senior years.

I know many people think universities should tailor just about any existing policy to an individual student's situation but it usually doesn't work that way in the real world IMO. Setting precedent in a difficult case might not be good. Certainly other freshmen and less advanced students will die at some point.

Some universities issue postumous "certificates of achievement" to less advanced deceased students but I don't see that UI does.

Does LE believe the Vans shoeprint belongs to the murderer?

Sounds like it:

From PCA

Print was found outside DM's bedroom door on 2nd floor ....... "this is consistent with DM's statement regarding the suspect's path of travel."

@NCWatcher Thanks for your post w link & quote; I agree, every uni. has to draw the posthumous degrees-line somewhere.

Further down in link to uni. policy, there is a ref to certificate (in lieu of posthum degree): "certificate acknowledging a student's course of study in a particular discipline."* So, essentially an item to hang a wall or place in a memory book or webpage, etc. In that regard perhaps equivalent (for fam, loved ones) to a posthum. degree?

* "O-11-b. Undergraduate Appeal Process If the student could not have reasonably completed all requirements in the final thirty (30) credits of attendance, but the request has the support of the academic department and college office, the request must be reviewed and approved by the Academic Petitions Committee. In instances where the award of the degree posthumously is not appropriate due to remaining requirements, the college may wish to grant a certificate acknowledging a student's course of study in a particular discipline."

Thanks. Somehow I missed that!

The Public handing out of Degrees is usually only for those present at Graduation, I think(at least my Alma Mater, Rutgers U). I did not attend my own Graduation, as I was very pregnant, and my Diploma was mailed to me. Just a thought, but no idea.

I think they will all receive posthumous degrees, but that's just my opinion.

Bryan Kohberger's alma mater Washington State University rocked by second campus death

Fri, April 14, 2023 at 10:49 AM EDT

"What is happening in Pullman this year??" a WSU student said in a comment on the campus police department's Facebook post.
Very sad, but at large Universities, Suicide is not uncommon, especially nearing exam time. Th article does not mention 'murder', so probably not good to assume anything. MOO

I'm sure they will. They each earned it and would be a sign of respect to honor their memories. MOO

It's possible. I can see it might seem awkward if they didn't since they were all murdered. But the awarding of university degrees under ordinary non-tragic circumstances is based on individual student achievement, not a shared group experience. If EC was still a freshman, he had not yet amassed 26 credit hours...pretty far from needing no more than 30 hours per the posthumous degree award policy. And has been discussed, KG was essentially through or would have been in Dec.

"Class ratings of undergraduates are determined as follows: Sophomore-26 credits, Junior-58 credits, and Senior-90 credits."

So I don't know.

YES, Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin will receive appropriate recognition posthumously.

I sent an email to Pres. Scott Green because today is the last day to nominate someone for an honorary degree. I was shocked to hear back from him.
My email:
I am wondering whether or not the U of Idaho will be honoring or give honorary degrees to Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin at the Spring Commencement?
Please honor them with degrees.

Interesting! But doesn't say all will get degrees, just "appropriate recognition." That might be less than a degree for some.

What a lovely way to support the victims, both those who remain and the four souls who now live in their memories. @I'm Nobody you are really somebody! IMO.
