Is it CSI Las Vegas or the neatly edited Dateline episodes that have America's sense of what it takes for a jury to convict all out of wack?

yes agree. But only IF the ping data is finite enough to get it down the to street level. I think there were only 3 cell towers in all of Moscow
I've really got limited knowledge about that stuff beyond a very general understanding! But the phone was off during the time of the murders which as part of a totality of circumstances may be relevant for the prosecution IMO. To my mind the pings show a general direction of travel before and after the murders that coincides. For the time of the murders I've always thought the video footage of the suspect vehicle was strong circumstantially in context for the establishment of probable cause.

MOO It will be really interesting to see what else investigators find on BK's devices including anything that can be forensically pulled from the phone itself for the night and in the weeks and days surrounding.
(Speculation only on basis of info in PCA)

There's a 3 week gap in the PCA which ended with LE obtaining a warrant for cell tower data. Which means they had enough evidence to clear the probable cause bar at the point.

Were they able to do that using a vague "bushy eye brows" description, a LE ticket in August, BK driving 1 out of 20k+ white Elantras and videos voluntarily given to them? Maybe...but they had that stuff 3 weeks prior.

IMO, we're going to learn that during those suspiciously quiet 3 weeks LE was able to strengthen their case against BK.
I think so too.
Sheriff twinkle eyes was kind of indicating they had confidence in an arrest in the near future and he's not the kind that would be just sayin' it IMO.
His heart is in it. That single factor always makes the difference with me.
I do wish them a successful prosecution and a powerful case presentation.
be super cool if the knife showed up in the meantime..

Perhaps three weeks of intense due diligence? Following up of other white elantras (the public call for white elantras came on Dec 7th - see WS media thread for articles), following other angles, finalising the complex video evidence, finding or trying to find any video footage for the night from Pullman that hadn't been wiped? Just a few ideas. I don't think it was quiet behind the scenes! MOO

Quite possible. LE would not only want to identify THIS white Elantra, but also eliminate all the other white Elantras in the area.

What have I missed about the Sheriff?
People commented on him looking optimistic, like he knew of good, not-yet-public developments, after a couple of December press conferences, if I recall correctly.

What have I missed about the Sheriff?

A few days before the arrest in his regular press briefing, he was uncharacteristically upbeat about asking for people to send in tips, etc. He looked like he was in a good mood even though his words were just the regular. Many people thought "something is up" .....and they were right.

He knew BK was being followed and an arrest was imminent.

I still think it is about ALL Internet users' response to this terrible crime.
"Our" WS is very tame :)
It just gave name and replaced the slightly old fashioned term "armchair detectives".

JMO
Oh I agree with you, that it is about ALL armchair detectives, but this could be missed by others to mean it is WS that is the problem. I'm just being defensive of our wonderful group :)

I've always been of the belief that once something has been put in garbage at the curb that is becomes public property?
JMO

Where I live, it becomes the property of the trash collection agency, not the public.

If it were public, then people could just go through my trash at will (which would mean a lot more shredding of many more documents).

It is absolutely against the law in my city (could be local code) for anyone other than the resident and the trash company (as agent of the city) to go through the trash. City police may also dig through trash, as the ultimate purview of my trash (once it's on the curb) is the City. But just because the City "owns" my trash and recyclables and compost doesn't mean "the public" gets to take and use it.

IMO

In his writings as a teenager, he said that the VS was less bothersome at night. Different than the literature. JMO

Probably less visible without the need to parse the scene for color. But yes, most of the literature states that sufferers have difficulty with night vision. I don't know if he was driving yet, at the time he wrote that.

Being outside at night in a mostly black and white world might even feel more copasetic for a person with VSS. Whether they can actually see well at night would need expert determination for most people. Clearly, BK was driving at night in Moscow, and apparently that was without incident (although he had been stopped once or twice for minor things in Pullman).

IMO.

There are way more individual cell towers than three - but there are only three that are federally registered.

The other towers still store data, but would require more warrants to obtain that data (which I assume has been done). Even some cell antennae masts store data (according to someone here on WS who works in telecommunications - but I have no link, so IMO).

There are, for example, towers registered to the County. All of these record pings, but would require separate warrants. A phone will ping off towers owned by other cell providers as well.

There are four non-FCC towers that are registered with state agencies. And a host of non-registered towers that still collect (some) ping data. Different towers keep that for different lengths of time, etc.

There are 25 towers altogether:

Most are registered to the city or the county, and not the FCC - but data can still be collected (LE itself has towers). I figure it would take quite a bit of time to get the data returned from all these places. It can take a month or more, even with FCC registered towers (I think the FBI can do this more quickly, but it looks like it still took more than just a few days).

IMO.

I'm just curious as to why this crime still resonates with the people that are on this forum. Given that the next hearing won't be until the end of June, very little new information has come out and the information that has been provided has been analyzed by everyone from Dr. Phil to Banfield to this group. What is the motivation to keep posting?

Four vibrant young people were slaughtered in the dead of night in their home, and we care about that?

I can't speak for anyone else, but that's why I'm here.

This isn't just a puzzle, it's a real case that stole four real people from their loved ones. I can talk to other people here about that. I don't need to be constantly 'entertained' with new developments. This isn't live tv news. I'm content to talk the case over with like-minded folks all over the world, some of whom I will agree with, and some I won't, but it's all good.

I'm here for Xana, Ethan, Maddie, and Kaylee.

New interesting information has been coming out. Every notorious case has talking heads analyzing them. Should we stop because others analyze it? No.

As sheriff said a number of times in December when almost pleading for patience ' we don't just want an arrest, we want a conviction' (paraphrase but something like this I believe) so due diligence was a must. MOO

It’s mainly about the coverage, not the case. Lots of talk about Entin.

I skimmed it, so I can’t swear I got everything, but I don’t think you lost much by being on the wrong side of the paywall.

MOO
Agree, but I think this installment does a very good job of really explaining the impact of the crime and the coverage on my community, which I especially appreciate. MOO & YMMV

Exactly. And this possible, in part, what he was referring to. They had identified BK and his car, and had a good idea he was their guy. But they still needed to follow up on the other white elantras in the area, to check with them to eliminate them as possibilities. So at trial if the defense tries to say it wasn't BK's car, the DA can point out that all the other white elantras known in the area are accounted for and were not in the area.
