I agree. IMO he definitely wasn't operating on all four cylinders, based on some major mistakes.I don't think anyone that made the glaring mistakes that he made, would be super aware of the vehicles at the scene. I think he only had a precursory knowledge of vehicles.
This defendant took his phone and drove his car to his multiple murder scene. I don't think he was operating on all 4 cylinders. Emotions and mental issues were at play here.

Plans aren't what they're cracked up to be.
