6 Year Old Dies Falling From Chair With Scissors

Great post... We do all the above too. One can never be too careful. But even then accidents happen. My heart breaks for this family.

My MIL told about a story she read when our oldest was still a baby. I don't know if it was a local story or not. Apparently the mom was loading/unloading the dishwasher and her child (not sure of the age) tripped and fell and got stabbed my a fork that was still in the utensil holder. My MIL lectured to make sure that we put our forks and knives blades down, which we did. But still the story unnerved us all.... Accidents just happen, unfortunately.

My heart goes out to this poor family as well. I remember a story of a woman who died when she fell on knives that were in the utensil basket in her dishwasher, so we always load ours sharp points down.
We have a 2 year old, & I swear she seems to have a death wish - Lets see, in the past month she :

1) found a penny, put it in her mouth. Also, found a screw, also ended up in her mouth.
2) While eating at a restaurant, she collected several forks, within the first few minutes of us sitting at a table, & FELL with a handful of forks. All I can say, is that dad & I were distracted trying to get the baby & ourselves, & the 4yo & my 2 yo niece situated, & we didn't notice her with a handful of forks. She was not hurt, Thank God
3) On mother's day, we were making breakfast, & there was a steak knife on the counter. I am usually good about placing any utensils out of her reach, but apparantly, she could reach this one, & the moment my back was turned, she grabbed it. My niece told me my daughter had a knife, again she was not hurt. She was placed in a time out, & I said a little prayer, that she was not hurt...
4) This morning, I had to grab her as she attempted to climb the shelves in the pantry. I am not sure how stong those shelves are, but apparantly, they can hold the weight of a 27 pound toddler.

She is actually a bit of a late bloomer, my now 4 year old was hell on wheels from the time she could walk. My 2 YO has only recently started giving me a real run for my money. My son who is 6 months, has me scared already -- everyone tells me boys are so much harder when they are young.

This story breaks my heart, I can see this happening, in an instant. I think most parents can probably think back & name a few occasions where their kids were lucky to survive...

Dena - It may have been a knife. My memory is currently shot. :D We too are diligently about these things. I would love to know if they make locks for dishwashers. Will check that out when we go to the store....

LTC - Sorry but I have to laugh... Yes, your daughter does have some death wish. LOL!! Not really but I feel your pain. My 4 yr old never got into anything and if she did it only took tellin her "no" one time and she never did it again. My 2 yr old however is into everything. If it crosses her mind, she does it, no matter what. She mentally, physically and emotionally exhausts me. I'm having a boy in 4 days. I'm scared to death he's going to be like our 2 yr old. God help me....

That's why, as parents, we do everything we can think of to protect our kids. We've had so many times as parents when I've said "But for the grace of God, go I."

My scissors are on the counter (with the knives) and my 4 year old can get up there if she wanted to. I hadn't thought about it much until now.

When we moved into our house - I put all the cleaning chemicals up on a high shelf, instead of under the sinks. Now - we buy all the non-toxic neutral stuff for cleaning. The only thing dangerous that I keep around is the Clorox wipes. I just got too nervous about one of my kids drinking or eating the chemicals.
