Great post... We do all the above too. One can never be too careful. But even then accidents happen. My heart breaks for this family.
My MIL told about a story she read when our oldest was still a baby. I don't know if it was a local story or not. Apparently the mom was loading/unloading the dishwasher and her child (not sure of the age) tripped and fell and got stabbed my a fork that was still in the utensil holder. My MIL lectured to make sure that we put our forks and knives blades down, which we did. But still the story unnerved us all.... Accidents just happen, unfortunately.
My heart goes out to this poor family as well. I remember a story of a woman who died when she fell on knives that were in the utensil basket in her dishwasher, so we always load ours sharp points down.
We have a 2 year old, & I swear she seems to have a death wish - Lets see, in the past month she :
1) found a penny, put it in her mouth. Also, found a screw, also ended up in her mouth.
2) While eating at a restaurant, she collected several forks, within the first few minutes of us sitting at a table, & FELL with a handful of forks. All I can say, is that dad & I were distracted trying to get the baby & ourselves, & the 4yo & my 2 yo niece situated, & we didn't notice her with a handful of forks. She was not hurt, Thank God
3) On mother's day, we were making breakfast, & there was a steak knife on the counter. I am usually good about placing any utensils out of her reach, but apparantly, she could reach this one, & the moment my back was turned, she grabbed it. My niece told me my daughter had a knife, again she was not hurt. She was placed in a time out, & I said a little prayer, that she was not hurt...
4) This morning, I had to grab her as she attempted to climb the shelves in the pantry. I am not sure how stong those shelves are, but apparantly, they can hold the weight of a 27 pound toddler.
She is actually a bit of a late bloomer, my now 4 year old was hell on wheels from the time she could walk. My 2 YO has only recently started giving me a real run for my money. My son who is 6 months, has me scared already -- everyone tells me boys are so much harder when they are young.
This story breaks my heart, I can see this happening, in an instant. I think most parents can probably think back & name a few occasions where their kids were lucky to survive...
