Imo

It seems a bit strange that SK, an electrician, which requires skills and attention, former Marine, avid outdoors man would, MC says, “forget” the GPS then disappear without a trace.

Black Diamonds post quotes “he left the unit in the tent” which sounds more deliberate.

All imo
Hmmm, When I click on the AG comment/18 replies I get link broken or page removed.

I have wondered about the deliberate though. He was a former marine and not impossible he had PTSD. Jmo :(

I can't see anything of interest but looks like several were deleted

That is higher on my list than bear attack or being lost.

This post by an AK truck driver was shared to the group by Liz Keel. He is one of the searchers. If you click on his name and go to his page, you can see a good map of where he searched including labels of where Steve's camp was.

Also check the comments on his posts because CS's sister is also posting maps of his progress.

You're visiting another state.
In unforgiving remote territory.
And you don't check in/register that you are doing it with that state.
Regrettable.

To paraphrase ‘he didn’t make it to the meat and forgot the GPS her father let him borrow’

Another posters comment ‘he disappeared at mile marker 336.5 off Dalton Highway South of Deadhorse’

Somewhere on a reply to the thread former workers and truck drivers give accounts of the area there was a detailed description of the suns arc up there being disorienting

all imo

Hopefully long enough to get your fire started!

Is that known, that he disappeared at mile marker 336.5 on Dalton highway?

That's actually not correct. If you look at landmarks on the various search maps that have been posted and look at a mile marker map, he actually was camping between mile posts 346 and 347.

You can add a layer on this map that shows mileposts

Snipped for focus....

This was what I was nattering about earlier, about the idea that from the point of view of a human in the arctic at this time of year, the sun would be in almost the same place all day. If you were from the lower 48 and used to being outdoors, this could really throw you off.

Theoretically, the fellas had a lot of GPS redundancy, though.... Garmin etrek, phone, smartwatch(?), manual compass to take a bearing(?), so they shouldn't have been thrown off by the angle of the sun. On the other hand, the phone may have run out of battery. SK might not have had a smartwatch with GPS. He didn't have the etrek with him. And he might never have used a compass to take a bearing (i.e. of the meat stash) or known how.

I wonder how long those will burn?
Until the wick burns out, but...... that's long enough to work at feeding tinder to get a good fire going. The candles would be something like a "long-burning wind-proof match".

Whaaaat? That's very precise. And unless this person was a witness, how does he know?

He may have been camping between mile marker 346 and 347, but disappeared at 336.5.....??

Could that be a thing?

I'm not sure what happened. His wife gave the info about 336.5, but all of the searches have been concentrated between 346 and 347

That's a huge 10 miles difference! A crazy amount of land in that terrain.

I wonder why the discrepancy.?

I have been following this case and have hoped they would find SK and believe that either he had a medical emergency or just got lost. Either way he has fallen somewhere where he can't be seen. I have felt badly for his friend. People are suspicious of him. In the early days it was reported on FB that the friend was worried SK would be angry if he came back to find that the SOS had gone out. This rings true to me and human nature. We have different comfort levels in asking for help and SK may have had a high tolerance for risk given his skills

So I guess I am confused , as @OddOneOut just posted ‘that is where his camp was’.
