AK AK - Tok, WhtMale 25-35, UP12375, one-eyed hitchhiker picked up in ID, Aug'79

No, I have not received a response. The doe network said in their original email that I'd only get one if it was a match. I assume they didn't proceed with sending it to investigators since it's been over a year. Is it a good idea to send the match to another agency or just leave it alone?

I'm very glad to see another exclusion on the list, it's good that this case is still being looked at by someone

Matches generally take a lot longer than exclusions. If they make a tentative initial match, they then have to follow up, locate relatives, perform confirming testing, notify other next of kin. That can take a couple of years.

And then there can be issues of ongoing criminal investigation. In this case the crime against the UID has been solved, but there's the possibility the UID himself was wanted for something serious.

So while it's discouraging not to hear anything, it doesn't necessarily mean they aren't following up.

Somebody earlier in the thread mentioned wondering if investigators looked through Oregon's worker's compensation records to see if somebody was reported to have missed an eye in a logging accident about the same time Jack would have lost his. I wonder about that as well. I also do have to wonder if a logging company would go through those measures to report it. Just some thoughts floating around in my head.

I noticed that DNA is available for both McCoy and John Doe. It might be an automatic exclusion.

Unfortunately Christopher didn't go missing until after the date when the confessed murderer says he killed the unidentified man, according to the information in this thread"s first post:

"Subsequently an individual in custody in Nevada admitted to murdering a hitchhiker that he had picked up in September of 1978 while driving in Alaska."

But neither Doenetwork nor Namus include that information so maybe it's not accurate--this is probably close enough to submit just to make sure the DNA was tested.

Possible this profile?

OMG. I went to school with Clayton. I didn't realize they still considered him missing--the story at the time was that he had gone out hunting in a rather rugged area with lots of old mines and had fallen down a mine shaft. (He would not have been the first to die that way in that area.)

I didn't know him well and hadn't seen him for years, but...yeah, that could be him.

I've always wondered whether it was sexual, either a consensual encounter that went south, so to speak, or one or the other objecting to an advance from the other one. It's a situation that often produces that kind of violence.
This is exactly what I thought too—especially when I read that the man originally wanted to go to Pendleton, but when Bishop said he was going to Alaska, the man decided to randomly tag along? That's a huge change of plans! Going from a three-hour drive to a two-day trip isn't a decision most people make on a whim. Makes me think they had to have developed some sort of connection and somehow hit it off, so to speak.

This is probably a stretch but I'm throwing it out there anyway.

Brian Guberman bears resemblance to the doe in my opinion, height and weight would be similar. He left from Edmonton, AB in 1974 and was an avid traveller. DoeNetwork suggests he wanted to stay with his cousins in Vancouver but never arrived, and had told other family he was going travelling. Maybe he changed his mind about Vancouver and didn't have their phone number and went into the States? Also, the time frame between Brian going missing and the doe's encounter with the murderer would be enough time to a) lose an eye and b) obtain a new identity in the US.

As for the "annoying behaviour" that caused the doe to be murdered, perhaps driving up through Canada made him nervous if they stopped in locations Brian was familiar with? Oregon and Idaho are both popular places to visit for Canadians.

Definitely an interesting theory! Him being from Canada is very plausible. Could've explained why he suddenly changed his mind about going to Oregon originally.

Either way, it's crazy he hasn't been identified yet.
I wonder if @othram can take a look? I think this doe has DNA on file.
