AL - Karen Shahan, 53, murdered, Homewood, 23 July 2013 #2

We don't sleuth people who are not involved in the crime. Thanks

Not sleuthing the interpreter...but the picture of "the interpreter" of RS - looked like a collegue of RS's that I knew and worked with...I was "sleuthing" the possibility that RS might have used a picture of his collegue from way back and called her the "interpreter" for his mission trip...that he might not have even been on. Someone a couple of posts back suggested that RS may have been asking for donations from churches only to move to be with his "boyfriend" instead of going on the mission trip. .

HOWEVER...

I actually found the PDF from the church newsletters and I did not recognize that person. So, I answered my own question. :nevermind:

But, I'd still like to know if KS had gone with RS on his 2012-2013 mission trip. I think that fact is very important to this case.

Snipped by me ...

I haven't seen that mentioned in any of the articles. Hopefully someone in the know can answer that question.

I am thinking the boyfriend is not local. I am thinking it is an internet. Relationship. I have a gut feeling in this.

IDK if anyone else remembers this but during the press conference announcing RS's arrest in TN, a reporter asked about a boyfriend who worked at a florist in Nashville, TN.

IMO, this person is who RS was planning a life with and since he and Karen lived in TN prior to moving back to AL, it's not unreasonable to suspect that this 'boyfriend' may date back to when they lived there.

If Karen found out about the relationship after all those years, she may have given RS the option of ending it and going on with their life as if nothing had happened. RS may have agreed to go to TN in order to end it in person and also to help his son prepare for a move. He probably never intended on ending the relationship in person, but made hasty plans to come back to Bham and murder Karen.

I don't necessarily believe that the plans to escape and marry the boyfriend were made prior to KS's murder. Rather I tend to believe that those plans might have come about after the murder as a means to escape the US and start a new life.

IMO, boyfriend was probably going to follow RS to Germany at some later date...maybe even a few months down the road so as not to raise suspicions.

All of this is purely speculation and opinion on my part. Just throwing it out there as another possibility.

BBM For all we know the boyfriend could have been on the same plane that RS was intending to board. Wouldn't that be something! I don't think traveling together would raise suspicion. Arrive at the airport in different cars and just ignore each other at the airport and board separately.

You might be right regarding the maybe plans. RS would not have to have divorce papers to marry wherever he was going to get married, he would have the death certificate. I really have no clue what is necessary documents one would have to have. :moo:

Nope, not a typo. Boggles the mind, doesn't it?????

He has a hearing today after being let out on bail (an outrage if you ask me) and remanded to house arrest at his mother's home.

Just watched the ABC 33/40 preview on streaming. She just recapped the case and said when asked about the prosecution's statement about leaving the country to be with his boyfriend, Richard Shahan's attorney said he would not comment on rumors.

Shahan's attorneys chose not to hold a preliminary hearing because, under the circumstances, the case was headed to a grand jury whether testimony was presented or not.

"Our understanding is that regardless of what happened today the state of Alabama planned to take the case to a grand jury," John Lentine said after the hearing.

The grand jury will consider the allegations against Shahan and determine whether to issue an indictment. If indicted, Shahan would be arraigned and prepare for a jury trial in circuit court.

Shahan is represented by defense attorneys Wendell Sheffield and John Lentine.
