All Sauvie Island Searches

This is not going to be a fun search. It's supposed to be raining cats and dogs tomorrow.

Perhaps the rain will disturb the landscape enough to help unearth some evidence. We cannot rule out that some sort of container/wrapper was used. We don't know what supplies or equipment TH may have hAd with her, and again, we still do not know how many phones, laptops, other communication devices were in use that morning. I'm so down with the person who thinks she was broadbanding for Facebook entries, and fiddling with pings.
I join all of you in hoping that this is the weekend Kyron comes home. And if it turns out it is, book 'em Danno.

thanks for the new thread. I have been questioning this search all week, spinning it over and over, and I can't help wondering why - if this area is so important, why take 5 days off before returning to the same site you already searched? Thats 5 days of weather...5 days of animal traffic...5 day lead for the perp to retrieve the goods and get outta dodge...

Five more days of weather after four months is not going to make a significant difference.

Five more days of animal traffic, ditto. If there has been animal activity, any remains will now be in such a state as to not be interesting to animals.

If TMH is the de facto suspect, I'm sure that LE is HOPING she goes out there. I cannot believe her movements are not being closely monitored. With GPS, etc, a human being doesn't even have to be within sight for monitoring to happen.

The big advantage to searching on weekends is that most of the SAR personnel are unpaid volunteers. Since most people work M-F, doing planned searches on weekends minimizes the amount of time SAR volunteers have to take off work. When dealing with volunteers for vital tasks, it's crucially important to minimize the financial impact and inconvenience of doing that task.

So many searches are emergencies and cannot be planned that it only makes sense to be as sensitive to various concerns and inconveniences for searches that are not emergencies. Burn your volunteers out and everyone in the public is a potential loser.

my point was that if I had put something out there thinking it wasn't going to be found and then searches resumed, I might be back out there monday after the coast was clear to dislodge any evidence from its home.

If I were LE, I'd be hoping that the perp would do exactly that. Wouldn't take much to set up some electronic surveillance of the area, especially since there is only one way onto and off the island by car. It would be a lot easier to find evidence if the perp leads them to it!

And they might even decide to set up surveillance of the general area in person. That's how they caught Wayne Williams, the Atlanta serial killer.

If I were LE, I'd have little cameras recording in all the areas they have been searching or plan to search next. Plus one on the bridge positioned to catch the driver, license plates and times of each person using the bridge.

Then I'd make sure a leak reached the press about which areas were going to be searched.

"Here, little fishy, look at this nice, shiny treat I have for you!"

How long do the SAR dogs have to rest? between searches?
and the main officer was hit by a drunk driver, could this be the delay also.

Depends on how strenuous, physically and mentally, the previous search was. And on the individual dog.

For a two day outdoor search in heavy underbrush, no rappelling needed, my guess would be 2-3 days.

Rest is not the only consideration. SAR dogs also need regular training sessions, which have to be factored in.

This weekend's search was already scheduled when the SAR coordinator was hit while working a traffic situation.

According to Lynne Terry of the Oregonian, Skyline School plans to be a spot to provide food and drink today for the searchers on SI, not to say that they were searching near the school. I e-mailed her earlier in the week about what Skyline's involvement was in this weekend's search as someone here posted a notice from Skyline's website that they were collecting food, drink and donations for this weekend, so she (LT) called them and they told her it is for the SI search...not a separate search near the school as I thought (and hoped.)

This search should have been completed months ago, I suspect that it would have been much more fruitful if there were anything to find. Piecemeal searches so long after the fact will not yield the clues that were present months ago. I felt they gave up too quickly and that the areas searched were not as comprehensive as they could have been.

Although they say the water table is lower (it was) today we have constant rain and the levels will rise very quickly, there were months to get this done before the rains set in, and no lack of people willing to help in the search.

It is possible they had concluded SI was not viable as far as where Kyron might be and only recently were given some other kind of tip that made them go back out there. They would not tell us, if that was the case. I think they might be following a lead separate from cell pings or else were able to get enhanced info on the initial pings.

About 100 searchers returned to Sauvie Island on Saturday to look for Kyron Horman, the missing boy who disappeared more than four months ago. Crews led by the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office have now focused on the island for two consecutive weekends.

Search teams plan to return to Sauvie Island on Sunday. Lindstrand said it's too early to tell when or where additional searches will be beyond this weekend.

I understand Grandmaj what you are saying. But for people to interject themselves into a high profile case isn't a good idea. Sheriff Dan Staton in his recent presser has went as far as to say they will not take tips from psychics. The vandalism and the note are not seperate issues in this case. How else would one get attention to the note except to do just that! Sorry I went off topic but I think this needed to be said.

I have such respect and admiration for SAR professionals, as well as the many volunteer searchers. It must be very exhausting work, not only physically but emotionally as well. Thoughts and prayers for their safety this weekend.
