All Sauvie Island Searches

Fantastic pictures as always. The one looking out to the water with the fog is just chilling! :(

That is from the wheelchair access part of Gilbert Boat Ramp looking back up to the regular ramp where they were diving.

I had told you about stuff in the water, you can see the tree sticking out...

It really was not foggy at all though, or at least it didn't seem like it..=)

Thanks so much for going out again to be our eyes! Having seen quite a few searches now, did you sense any urgency this time - or more focus? Like they really have this narrowed down? What did the vibe feel like?

This is just my opinion, but no.. I did not..

To me it appears they are doing exactly what they say they are.
Eliminating where he is NOT..
(I don't know the exact quote they have said, but they say it over and over)
and honestly it makes sense.

I for sure do not feel they are focused in just one area of the island at this time, that is fairly obvious from the different places I have seen them searching...
JMO =)

If they brought a reporter along I don't think they were planning on finding much. Not in my experience anyways, so I doubt there was a lot of urgency.

Given the timeline, it seems like they must think she passed him off to someone if they are searching that far up the island. One thing I've thought since we learned about SI being a focus a long time ago is that the island is not a place you would meet someone just to pass Kyron off, unless he or his body would be then hidden on the island (and they are probably looking for a body with these searches). If you were going to give him to somebody who would then spirit him away somewhere else you would have that meeting on the mainland, where you could both easily go your separate ways. So I guess that does fit with them focusing so much on the island.

Unless of course, the person was on a boat.

Talked to some duck hunters on Oak Island Rd today...

They saw dive teams (diving) in the area of Oak Island Rd today AND yesterday..
one mentioned seeing them in the Gilbert River and one made mention there were a lot of ponds in the area also, I do not know if he saw them in a pond(s).

I didn't want to push for info.

We saw a LOT of duck hunters today, they HAD to have seen dive teams in the inside portion of the island..

Hi Free, GOSH, my heart just skipped a couple of beats watching KOIN News at 6pm on their Kyron spot. I haven't even looked to see if they have a new link yet;

They showed a diagram of a boat with electronic signals going down thru a body of water to the bottom . Sonar, which is what they used today. And the reporter said they had found something on the bottom that the sonar kept bouncing off of. Hope that makes sense. Will look for a link.

xox

ETA: I wanted to add I know a little bit about sonar from the Scott Peterson case. The Sonar really shows a picture on a monitor on the boat of what it is bouncing off of. Even in the murky waters of the San Francisco Bay return channel to Richmond Harbor, they saw amazing detail when they spotted a body. Gene Ralston, the Sonar Captain, wrote to me in an email it was proven to be Laci they saw that day once they matched their Sonar photo prints with her remains when she washed ashore.

Now on the news they also pointed out this was a dismal time of year to be operating underwater searches, mid November and the recent rains making the water cold and hard to see thru.

My point being I don't think KOIN would have mentioned this on the news unless something interesting to Kyron's case has been found. LE has some info about SI or they never would be concentrating all of these searches on the island waters. IMO

God Bless Kyron and I so hope he is found soon now. xox

Sounds like they were just describing how sonar works with the bouncing. And says nobody would say if they found something.

Sonar sends sound signals through the water which hit underwater objects, then bounce back to the sonar equipment to create a sound-generated "picture" of what lies beneath the surface (see demonstration video).

snip

As has been the case with the ground searches in the area, neither the divers themselves nor other law officers were willing to say whether they found anything substantive this weekend.

Gosh, You'd think I'd know by now to read the whole thread before posting. LOL You guys are all over it, and thanks for your posts.

I'm crying I feel so sad and so very angry about what has happened to Kyron. For some reason his case seems so personal to me, like I know he is out here nearby but it is just taking way to long to find him and bring him on home.

Scandi, please bring us back a link so we know for sure what they were talking about. Thanks!

On the local Fox report tonight the sonar operator said it could image 100 feet outward from both sides of the boat, which means it covers a lot of ground. They should have the video at kptv.com at some point but right now the latest is the report from last night. Still seems like looking for the proverbial needle in the haystack to me.

Hi Bean, Thanks for that. I could swear the reporter said they had found something the sonar signals were bouncing off of. Of course I could be wrong. but I did hear him say then what you wrote, that they {KOIN} didn't know if it had anything to do with Kyron.

Going crazy. Maybe I am hearing what I WANT to hear, that they're getting close. xox

Scandi, please bring us back a link so we know for sure what they were talking about. Thanks!

You bet I will. I'm calling their News line now to see if that newscast spot will be repeated on the 11pm show and if they will have it on video. What Bean found above from KOIN just seems a bit different from what I heard live.

What I heard different is there was something found in the water that the sonar signals kept bouncing off of. That is what I will ask the news desk about.

ETA: Well, I just talked to the gal who answered the news desk phone. I explained how their link to the sonar searches today was a bit different than what I heard live on the 6pm News show and could she please ask the reporter about the signals repeatedly bouncing off something they had found in the river.

She was real nice but told me it won't do any good as if there is something 'new' they are going to be very tight lipped about it. Take it for what it's worth, eh.

Here are some great pictures that show how sonar works.

On this page you can see how the sonar (which are sound waves) extends downward and outward from the boat to "see" the bottom. It's like shining a flashlight in a dark room except you use sound instead of light.

Here is a great picture of a sonar bottom image, it looks a lot like the one they showed on the news report tonight:

And the page that picture came from, it has more pictures:

Thanks for checking that out Scandi. Nothing to go on but hope, but I'll take it. And Chili Fries, those sonar images are amazing. It makes me think if anything relevant is down there, they'll have spotted it.

Hi PDXMom, ITA with you and holding onto HOPE for all that it is. Just knowing they are searching with sonar gives me a very good feeling.

Like Free says it seems like LE is looking to see where he is not. I think that is how LE usually works, to move by elimination till they end up with something that can not be eliminated, hopefully leading to the solving of the crime.

Here, looking at everything I just read more into their searching. During the summer there was a point where they turned away monies for searching. Recently they were allocated new funds for searching and it seems these are quite thorough and more involved than before. Yes, it could be general investigating 101 but why is their concentration so pointed to SI?

I think for all this to be happening like it is, now adding sonar, they must have some purdy good witness info IMO.

Do you guys know if they have to give reasons or info for monies to be approved for searches? Much like getting a warrant?

Here's the link to the video about the divers and sonar from KOIN:

http://www.koinlocal6.com/content/[email protected]&navCatId=156

Spokesperson Mary Lindstrand for the Multnomah County Sheriff's Dept:

"This is not a training exercise. This is part of the mission to bring Kyron home."

Let me quote the reporter:

"Divers collected some items but so far they aren't saying if there's a link to the little boy."

Also, the reporter said that tomorrow morning Kaine will be doing some interviews.
