Aruba - Natalee Holloway, 18, Oranjestad, 30 May 2005 *AL extortion trial* *Guilty* #3

Does anyone know if JVDS's trial will be decided by a jury?

Hope not. Alabama juror's might be saturated with Joran allegations and convict him of kidnap, rape and murder rather than the charges he's facing ... thinking that they're giving justice to Natalee's family ... <modsnip - trashing the victim's family> Even trial by Judge alone in Alabama is something no one in Joran's circumstances wants to face.

Given the federal charges, is it an option to transfer the case to a different State, where some people may be less familiar with B. Holloway's pursuit of Joran?

There's a lot of quotes in this article that I can't include. First accounts, pressured by Americans flexing their muscles over a small foreign country. imo. Basically wrecking the investigation from the start, imo.

"Gerold Dompig, the deputy police chief in charge of the case, says the biggest obstacle to solving it has been the Twitty family itself. Among other things, Dompig charges that pressure from the family sidetracked the investigation from the outset, forcing the premature arrests of the main suspects and destroying the best chance police had of gathering evidence to solve the
case.
_-------------
They didn't understand the way things are done in our system. They didn't want to understand. They act like they came from a world where you can just crush people. It was very harmful to our investigation."

Dompig traces these difficulties to the first hours of his probe........"Jug and his Alabama friends, they basically came out and said they would bring hell to our island if Natalee wasn't found—'burn it down' were the exact words. That's when I knew we were in serious trouble."

"Renfro says she was perplexed when Twitty immediately concluded that her daughter had been kidnapped and made no effort to check hospitals or police about accident victims. Within a few hours, Twitty had concluded Van der Sloot was responsible, and within a couple of days she was telling TV interviewers that she knew her daughter had been gang-raped and murdered."
_--------------------
Renfro parted ways with Twitty and ceased front-page coverage of the disappearance after what she considered a malicious act of distortion. A video aired Sept. 15, 2005, on “Dr. Phil” appeared to show Deepak Kalpoe telling a California private investigator, Jamie Skeeters, that Holloway had sex with all three men on the night she disappeared.

The Kalpoe brothers sued talk-show host Phil McGraw, CBS and Skeeters (who died in January), alleging the clandestinely recorded jailhouse conversation was doctored heavily to change the elder Kalpoe’s response from “No, she didn’t” to “She did.” Versions of the original and aired tapes available on YouTube and other websites appear to back Kalpoe’s contention that his words were altered. Personally, I think Van Der Sloot should have been left in his cell in Peru. He is there for murder. He wasn't ever going to be released. I am surprised he is still alive.

Hopefully, he won't be able to spend the rest of his life in a nice prison in the United States.

He probably would have been killed there, rival gangs, people already with life sentences, nothing to lose by another murder. Isn't that essentially what happened to Dahmer?

Despite the "2 year" schedule to send him back, I doubt he will be returned, if he has a smart lawyer, for some of the reasons Otto outlined. And the Netherlands could intervene, resulting in some 3 way diplomatic deal.

Also Stephany was from a strongly political family, and who can say if that political party will be in power during future negotiations regarding JVDS.

Popular opinion or no, I think the exercise in bringing him to the USA was a media move that will backfire.

From what I've read and heard about Joran I have a very hard time having any sympathy for him. jmo

I'm sorry but Joran is not a victim nor was he ever. He was a kid that got away with everything bc of daddy. His grades were probably paid for. Mrs. Holloway was trying to find her daughter. Parents will do anything for their kids. Most would at least. His addictions arent her problems. Maybe, he shouldn't be a murderer.

Did I fall through the looking glass? When did Joran van der Sloot become a victim?

  • #290
He bludgeoned a girl to death. The fact he’s not spending life in prison is criminal.

Ummmm, can you give us one example of a "civilized country" who prioritizes rehab over punishment and who SUCCESSFULLY releases criminals of varying kinds who never repeat their initial crimes again? Looking at the US as an example, we fail poorly in that regard, and I believe we are one of the most "civilized" countries.

Of course he was on the verge of willing admission to a psych institution. Easier path.
There's some information at this link, and many others, that discuss the difference between prison ideology of rehabilitation versus punishment as a means for successful release of offenders back into society.
  • One of the biggest differences in German and Dutch prisons is the focus on “normalization”: making life in prison as similar as possible to life in the community.
  • German and Dutch prison systems are organized around central tenets of resocialization and rehabilitation. The U.S. system is organized around the central tenets of incapacitation and retribution.

This article has some information on what's Joran's been up up to in prison. Obviously not the model prisoner. And he's been able to marry and father a child while in prison. When does that happen in the US?

BBM

In July 2014, Joran was set to marry his pregnant Peruvian girlfriend, Leidy Figueroa, who told CBS News' Crimesider that she met him in 2010 when she went with her cousin to visit another inmate. Conjugal visits were allowed at Piedras Gordas, the maximum-security prison north of Lima where he spent the first few years of his sentence after being transferred from Miguel Castro Castro.

According to Leidy, her future husband had transformed "into a new person."

That August, however, Joran was transferred to the more remote Challapalca in the Andes mountains, where conditions are reputedly rougher, after allegedly threatening to kill the warden at Piedras Gordas. Leidy, who gave birth to a daughter in September, told Dutch newsgroup RTL that November that Joran had been stabbed by a fellow inmate at Challapalca—but the director of Peru's National Penitentiary Institute denied it, calling her a compulsive liar in an interview with Peru news network Channel N.

Let's be clear: VDS was NOT offered anything-- he EXTORTED $25K from BH for which he's been charged and why he's in the US today, and murdered a young Peruvian woman-- most likely to also steal her winnings from a poker tournament.

And where's the evidence of all OP claims about the defendant's medical condition and addictions? Please provide the links. Otherwise it's just untruths and speculation.

There's only one victim here and it's not VDS. MOO
I've linked the information about Joran's plans to be admitted to a psychiatric facility in the Netherlands 2 days before he went to Peru, and info about his compulsive gambling addiction.

"She told the newspaper her son disappeared in mid-May, two days before he was scheduled to travel to the Netherlands for treatment in a mental institution. He left a note saying he was going to Peru, she said."

"Joran is an ill person," Altez told Fox News Digital. "He is a person with psychological problems. He is a compulsory gambler . . . [like] a drug addict."

<modsnip - Fox News is no longer an approved source>

This has been the Beth Holloway show since day 1, when she and 11 others of the Alabama posse went to Joran's house to confront him and his father. Without LE, and before LE even had a chance to complete survellience. (In my links, above). Those 3 boys she constantly and publicly accused of "gang rape" and "murder" had mothers too. Both mothers had to experience the joy of being dealt with by american media, and Mrs Holloway in a manner no mother should have to endure. I posted the articles just a few hours ago. Just cuz a kid is big at 17 does not mean he does not have a kid's brain. He was singled out and attacked by Holloway

<modsnip: Name calling not allowed>

A mother's comment AFTER HER SON ARRESTED FOR MURDER is not credible evidence! He'd been traveling the world per his mother and came home (Aruba) for his dad's funeral -- not to be admitted to hospital as OP claims. This phony defense didn't work for Stephany's murder trial in and it won't work here either.

From the quoted link:

"My son is sick in his head," the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf quoted Anita van der Sloot as saying in an interview published on its website Sunday. The comments were her first since her son's most recent arrest.

[..]

Van der Sloot had been travelling the world but returned to Aruba in February after his father, Paul, died of a heart attack while playing tennis.

[..]

"But if he killed Stephany, he'll have to pay the price. I won't visit him in his cell, I cannot embrace him," she was quoted saying.

Facts matter: Van der Sloot confessed to murdering Stephany Flores Ramirez on the 5th year anniversary of Natalie vanishing, and was sentenced to serve 28 years in prison.

VDS said he found her using his laptop to read information about the Holloway case. After the murder VDS fled to Chile, where he was captured and extradited to Peru.

The prosecution asked for a 30-year sentence for first-degree murder and theft (stole her winnings), while VDS attorney argued his client was in an extreme case of psychological distress when he committed the murder and that his confession should be considered during sentencing.

As I said before, this phony defense didn't work for Stephany, and it doesn't work for Holloway either. MOO

This is true. We can choose to disbelieve Joran's family, his lawyers and everyone who speaks on his behalf, and instead believe Natalee's family and media who claim that Joran and two friends kidnapped, raped and murdered Natalee - even though there is no evidence.

I followed the story of Natalee closely in 2005, so the information about Joran entering a psychiatric institution in May 2010 is not new information for me. For those who only followed the information from Natalee's family, it is probably new information - meaning it's easier to dismiss it as an after-the-fact story intended to mitigate consequences.

From what I recall, LE wasn't cooperating or moving beyond a molasses pace, claiming in most cases they find the partying girls in an abandoned house a few days later because they OD'd. If you were Natalee's mother, would you not have pursued any angle you could have at the time, inc approaching the home of the person she was last seen with? What would you have suggested she do instead?

When you have a pissed-off five or ten-year-old in a big, strong body, with the freedom to do just as they please--drive a car, drink, gamble, travel, have sex, do drugs, exploit, intimidate and bully others and generally get their own way--you have an extraordinarily dangerous person capable of the most evil deeds. Such vindictive, embittered and often predatory individuals see the world as their playground, and everyone in it as their next victim. To cite convicted mass murderer Charles Manson, "I'm still a little five-year-old kid." Being controlled and driven by this hurt, selfish and angry inner child is an exceedingly dangerous state of mind.
