So how come she wasn't offered bail?
The Magistrate wasn’t legally able to grant bail due to the jurisdiction that the mention was held in, and her legal team did not make a bail application at that time.

Her counsel would need to make an application to the Supreme Court for bail.

@JBowie Thanks for the r/e link.
EP & SP bought it in 2019, before he transferred his interest to her, per a post in the past week or so.

At link:
"27 Jul 2019
Sold for $931,000"

"27 Jun 2019
Listed for Sale $800,000 - $880,000"

Bought on SAME day property was listed for sale, for a significantly HIGHER $ figure than the listng's $ range shown.

If that was not an auction purchase, seems the market for houses in that neighborhood was extreeemely hot.
And/or (inheritance?) money was burning a hole in her pocket??? Or other, IDK.
Looking at what you said, it took one month to sell. Listed June 2019 and sold July 2019.

I think maybe it is. Especially if only half of the kids costs or the kids half the time.

I reckon she wouldn't have an expensive lifestyle.

She has a new house that she owns outright (I think?) No mortgage or much maintenance

It doesnt look like she is concerned with her physical appearance much so she wouldnt be spending on clothes or hairdressers etc

If the kids go to public school that is pretty cheap

She did have free childcare until a certain recent lunch

She is a foody so one of her biggest expenditures would be food. But she forages. Does she also garden? Hunt? All of those make it cheaper.

She's a loner and a homebody, so not spending on eating out or holidays or concerts etc

And she is an intellectual but she might go to the library instead of buying books etc.

Kids are not cheap though so I am sure she would have been spending on them especially as it seems like that’s all she had in her life.

Not if she was paying all of the child-related expenses, but presumably SP was paying ½ of the child-related expenses, or giving her child support payments and picking up some of the other expenses (school uniforms and such).

She still may have been struggling with cash though. I checked, and if she was getting rental income of approx $600 per week she would not have been eligible for Parenting Payment.

imo
It depends how much the expenses were in relation to the rental income - eg any mortgage repayments (it's been speculated that there was no mortgage on this property - unsure if this is correct), maintenance of property, property management fees, strata management fees etc would all be offset against the income derived from the property's rental.

@SleuthingSally Thank you for catching that.
A nitwit move on my part, either figuring wrong or copying incorrectly. :( My apologies.

Still intriguing imo, that the $931,000 sales price was $51,000 above the higher range shown at listing --- $800,000 to $880,000.

I think it’s really intriguing too.

Why offer so much more? It’s unusual.

I think it is likely a bidding war happened for the property.
That $1,000 ($931,000 as opposed to a round sum like $930,000) could be an indicator that they needed to top someone else's bid by a small (but not too small) amount to win the property.

I took a look back at what was happening in Melbourne's property market in mid-2019.
There had been a change in govt, which meant that negative gearing would still be allowed. And there were three interest rate cuts. Both things heightened investor confidence.

Sydney and Melbourne were the two strongest property markets - ending 2019 with 5% increases in property values.
Which is what seems to have happened here, with this property being sold for 5% more than its asking price.

Yes, I am not sure that EP had any mortgages to pay. And I am unsure there would be strata fees. There are only two (separate) homes at the address. An original house in front, EP's prior unit at the back. Only the driveway and some fencing seems to be common property. imo

The Leongatha house, worth approximately a million dollars, stands fully owned by Patterson. Additionally, she owns a villa worth a million dollars, located in the eastern Melbourne suburb of Mount Waverley, purchased using funds from her mother’s inheritance.

That’s interesting JLZ and it’s got me thinking!!

She may have had a passive income from another property?

She may have been eligible to be on a disability pension from DHS but I’m not sure she would be eligible due to their asset tests.

In terms of a single parent payment from DHS, there’s asset tests on that and I think owning a second property which she did not live in might preclude her from passing the asset test, but I’m not really sure.

I do wonder what she was using as income, to pay food, bills, car expenses like fuel, and school fees.

I also wonder if she would be eligible for job seeker? Or maybe ex partner Simon was paying some sort of alimony to her to keep her afloat?

All imo
Disability payments would depend on "asset tests" whatever they are? I am not in Australia but that seems odd to me.

There are various Centrelink payments for which she may have been eligible at the time, including Jobseeker Payment, Disability Support Pension, Parenting Payment and Families
Payment. Please note that "eligibility" relates to whether or not someone satisfies the relevant legislative criteria as opposed to "entitlement".
(Eg for someone to be eligible to receive Jobseeker Payment, they would need to be aged between 22 and Age Pension age, and looking for work, or temporarily sick or injured, and unable to do their usual work. Australian Residency is also a legislative requirement.

Someone may satisfy the legislative requirements for a specific payment, but may have no "entitlement" due to their income. This relates to the rate of payment.
Many recipients have income which fluctuates - which may have the effect of their payment rate also fluctuating.

(Most Australian Websleuthers would have heard about the "Robodebt" situation whereby unlawful debts were raised against many pensioners, due to flawed assessment of (mainly) fluctuating incomes.)

Regarding Child Support, IMO it is likely that SP was paying Child Support (there are exceptions, but I doubt that they would apply in this case.)

See below for information regarding the Child Support payment formula (this is the "simple" version.) (gasp)

I am out of the loop about the department of defense speculation and very interested - would anyone mind filling me in?

An online "friend" said that EP had worked as an accountant, and for the Dept of Defence. There has been no confirmation of this, by anyone else, that I have seen.

Another anonymous person claiming to be a friend of Ms Patterson provided more details about her life in an online forum which was shut down by site administrators.
The source claimed Ms Patterson had previously worked as an accountant and with the Department of Defence.

“She's meticulous and very smart," the person wrote.
“Her whole family are extremely smart people.”
The so-called "ex-friend" claimed to have met Ms Patterson online through a true crime group but never met up with her face-to-face.

Yes, yes, yes. Seems likely.

Thanks for posting.

The housing market is nuts, has been for a few years. There are so few properties available, especially in the rental market. I'm lucky to be living with family, and for that family member to have fully paid off their mortgage. There's no way any of us could afford to rent or buy right now.

Yep, having "been there, done that" several decades ago (in the US), understanding the situation you're referring to.
Hoping the economics & dynamics change in your favor.
And soon.

Thanks very much.
Has the report of her working as an air traffic controller been confirmed?
And is that the same or a different job to the Department of defense job?

Yes, her air traffic controller stint has been confirmed by a former co-worker and by an Airservices Australia spokesperson.

I, too, was wondering if she classified this as her Dept of Defence job. Airservices Australia is a wholly owned govt entity.

Their website mentions the Dept of Defence - with regard to the DoD conducting their own military aircraft traffic control.
