I think I remember a documentary years ago about air traffic controllers and it did say that many don't stay very long in the job due to the stress.
Is it also up there with veterinarians for suicides?

Pooooosibly.... but I'm thinking of her driveway interview, and how... histerical she kind of was

Not necessarily mutually exclusive... but usually mutually exclusive? For some one to not like drama and be a bit dramatic themselves?
i think the driveway interview was an ambush and she was overwhelmed by the intense scrutiny,
her performance seemed desperate and childlike in my opinion

sorry ellery, my comment wasnt aimed at you:), i was just imagining her at work with everyone hysterical watching the 911 horror and her sitting calmly in another room with a cup of tea, rolling her eyes, wishing she was at home,
the media little bits of background info often seem biased and trying to paint her as a certain way, but still intresting to read:)
The events happened overnight (in Australia) and the news coverage ran all night and all through the next day. She wanted some quiet space while she drank a cup of tea? So what? What are these people who say how it's OK to move one's eyes?

She did seem to have a bit of a driveway meltdown / tantrum.

Yes there are some types of special people who don't do other people's drama and chaos but are pretty good at generating their own and dragging everyone into it. We don't know enough about her but it'll be interesting to see what comes out in court about what type of person she's thought to be or is psych evaluated to be. JMO

Vis a vis alleged driveway meltdown, she really did seem to be having a pretty shthouse day…. I mean, I get it.

It must have been unpleasant to have media on one’s doorstep at such a sensitive time.

IMO

You're talking about this interview, correct?

IMO, she's being very calculated in her statement here. I think she had planned out exactly what she wanted to say to the media and how she wanted to say it. It may not have come across as well as she intended, but I don't believe she was truly ambushed in that initial interview. (I may be imagining this, but I think I see a little half-smile, i.e. duper's delight, right before she walks away from the camera.)

Now in her subsequent interactions with the media, I think she did truly feel overwhelmed and ambushed, that's why she started snapping at reporters.

yes this interview, its hard to watch, awkward, clumsy, fake crying, but yes, the little speech and crying may have been planned

We have had 3 long timers in that job in my partner's family, not mine, 2 female, 1 Male, and having spent social time with the 2 girls, bubbly and fun and lovely, never a word has ever been said by them about their jobs, experiences, etc jme.

IMO, all an act ... and not a good one. Her pretend tears were laughable.

That makes sense. The rental income may have been sufficient to live on, but not enough to pay for her (presumably expensive) attorneys.
Might also be a little tricky to have a landlady who’s being held on suspicion of murder! Could get complicated if she doesn’t have anyone willing to act as some sort of proxy.

She’s been described here in the article as having been abrasive, acerbic, and it was said that whilst undertaking her ATC course profram she frequently offended people, although perhaps unwittingly so.

It was said that Erin didn’t gather with her fellow ATC colleagues/students to watch Sept 11 unfold on a television set, she sat alone in another room instead.

IMO
I think that is very interesting because an Air Traffic Controller would hopefully be very concerned about airliners being hijacked and crashed into buildings. Surprised that she wouldn't sit with the other ATCs to earn what they needed to learn about that tragic situation

I don't think she was a very empathetic or compassionate person. JMO

maybe she just doesnt like drama and histrionics?
Maybe, but she was an air traffic controller---and that entire incident involved Air Traffic Controllers in the most intense situation they could ever imagine.

Terrorists were literally contacting the ATCs by radio and announcing they were about to crash the airliners---and the ATCs were trying to figure out how to stop the tragic situation. It seems like something an ATC should be watching in real time. JMO

“We had a horrible upbringing. Mum was essentially a cold robot.

“It was like being brought up in a Russian orphanage where they don’t touch babies.”

It’s the Russian orphanage comment for me.

I’ve never, ever heard someone say that about their childhood or infancy before. Ever.

I feel really devastated for Erin that she perceived her upbringing as such. It’s heartbreaking.

IMO

I feel like maybe Erin was in the other room keeping an eye on the actual planes whilst her colleagues were glued to the TV screen?

I mean someone had to be watching the planes come and go.

Maybe her focus was on her work, and she would catch up with this horrific incident unfolding in the USA when she was done with her shift?

IMO

I am not 100% sure that is a true description of her childhood. Sometimes people exaggerate such things for sympathy or attention. JMO

I've heard people say things like that about their childhoods, then heard their siblings refute it totally. So I will wait and see what comes out after the trial.

Wouldn't her coworkers say that instead of saying 'she sat alone in another room.'

If she was sitting alone 'in another room' it probably wasn't the control room she was sitting in alone. JMO
