Australia Australia - Celine Cremer, 31, Belgium backpacker, car found at the Philosopher’s fall track, Waratah, Tasmania, 12 June 2023

Video of Rob's team finding the two bags and bottle. One bag was small, but other was a large garbage back which had a whole for the head.
The additional bit of information was there some string in location tied to a root.

Interesting that there appears to be some sort of track down to the river, when it crosses the water race it isn;t that clear that you're crossing it.

Her friends from Belgium think she had a small compass on her bag. So, it is possible she had both a bag and compass. This maybe explains how she was able to keep a set direction

Interesting discussions online in the videos chat section, that the smaller bag could have been worn over the head at night. Also the stump may have been used to hold the bag down with the string at the top, keeping the rain off. With the fact she has nto been found on the hill, makes it very likely she survived the first night.

Wow, that seems potentially quite significant. I'm surprised the string wasn't reported in the media.

I wonder why Celine left the main track

I wonder why Celine left the main track
Whilst we can never know the mind of someone.
She either missed the waterfall 90 degree turn off down the stairs to the waterfall, or after she had visited the waterfall decided to go on toward the dam. However, she was using the track to navigate. At some point she decided it was getting late. She turns on her phone and starts back tracking near the dam. However, the water race is not a track, it is the former ground works for a water race. As she was back tracking, she got to a point where the water race is not well defined, at that point the track is leading away from the waterfall. She has her phone open, but the water race is not on google maps. and she notices the track she is on, such as it is, is not going towards the water fall but away. There is a sidetrack (that can be seen on Rob's first video above) that is going up the hill, and more in the direction of the waterfall. Her GPS points have her taking that culvert/track up the hill, but it quickly peters out as you go up the hill but the vegetation becomes a little thinner as she goes up.

In the video, Rob and Celines friends follow the directional path (based on the phone and the shelter location), which most definitely would cross the water race. Surely, you would, while also being in a panic, not notice that it's man-made when crossing it. Assuming she crossed the water race, which would mean that if following the same trajectory you would most definitely stumble across the Arthur river (only a few hundred meters away from the falls), my question is why she did not follow the river upstream (since she had already been at the falls the day prior and was aware of her rough position)?

It's very plausible that she did, and while the area around the water race has been searched thoroughly, from the information available my understanding is the riverbed and slopes have not. One theory is she may have fallen into the river from those treacherous cliffs on the riverbank. That is what stopped Rob and his crew to pursue that direction further in the video. And climbing those steep inclines would be especially dangerous after rainfall, in low light conditions or when suffering hypothermia. Also, in winter the river would be much higher and torrential. A local wrote somewhere that the water level may have been up to 4 meters high. If you fall in, the next natural spot you would beach might be that bend in the river where it meets 7 mile creek, precisely where Ted Mead found those footprints in 2023! At least, it would explain how she wound up so far off course, and on the other side of the river, if those footprints truly were hers.

Regarding those footprints, I read somewhere (don't remember whether it was YT), that they were size 7.
Would that 'fit' Celine's shoe size?
Isn't there a size 7 for women and a (different) size 7 for men?

A size seven women's is roughly equivalent to a five and a half in men's.

Since Ted had been in contact with the family, I assume they discussed the prints and her shoe size.

Link to the article with a photo of one set of prints:

What I find very confusing about the shoe prints, is that they were found both north and east of the Arthur River, while Céline was on the west bank. Which would mean she crossed the river twice, each time in the wrong direction, close to each other. In a state of delirium from hypothermia, who's to say, but that's about the only explanation I can think of.

Ted's article from late december with a map of the footprints relative to the latest findings:

Another thing that's been bugging me is the timeline of the phone and shelter. Her last GPS signal was at 16:18, and with sunset at 16:42, overcast weather, a new moon, and the density of the forest, it must've been near complete darkness. Rob actually demonstrated in one of his videos what it must've been like. And in that 20 minute window of fading daylight, she managed to cover another 250 meters across gnarly terrain and put up that shelter. And crucially, during which she realised she had lost her phone, her one lifeline. She must've have spent at least some time processing it emotionally and trying to relocate it. Or did she have another light source?

Curious to hear your theories.

We have found out from her friends that she likely had a small compass. (Which explains her ability to direct her direction after she lost the phone.)
Given she had large and small bags, some string and a glass bottle of water.
It would seem likely she had some sort of bag to carry it in, no way she carried all that in her hands.
So, a torch would not be out of the question. She had been in Tassie for sixth months, it gets dark early down there in winter, and travelling alone, even getting into hotels/cars a little light would help. (Even a small key chain light, as the Belgian indicated the compass was a small one.)

The other observation I would make is people asked why she left the stuff at the tree, given all that she had, it is not beyond possibility she had an additional garbage bag and left what she had to lighten her load. She seems better resourced than I had initially presumed.

What has the investigation on Celine's phone revealed? Is there any news?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I'm assuming she had her backpack with her, because iirc in the video it's her mother on facetime that tells the friend about a small compass on the strap of her backpack. So yes, if she had more bin bags in her backpack, maybe even a plastic water bottle, it would help to explain why she left those items. Also, some people have suggested the contraption was meant to catch water, and not a shelter. Something I had disregarded at first, until I saw Diesel's video, that better shows the giant hollow tree trunk, almost shaped like a hut, right next to the hollow where they found the bags and water bottle. That may have been the actual shelter, with the tied up bag close by to harvest drinking water.

So many angles to think about. Hopefully her loved ones get some closure soon.

Map of the area, that looks like an information board from the location.
Note what looks like a path around the area where Celine diverged from the water race course.
