So glad to hear that Australians are responding well to the call for assistance with benefiting the baby.

Man accused of murdering mother Kristie Powell refused bail in Maitland court

THE man accused of murdering mother Kristie Powell at Bellambi on Friday has been refused bail during a brief court appearance in Maitland Local Court.

He sat in the court dock smiling, with his hands up and his fingers outstretched throughout the brief appearance. He also appeared to be softly muttering to himself.

Magistrate John Chicken asked Mr Kirkman if he was aware he had been charged with an offence of murder.

“That is correct, Your Honour,” Mr Kirkman replied.

He did not enter a plea or apply for bail and the matter was adjourned to Wollongong Local Court on October 17.

"Mr Kirkman is accused of murdering Ms Powell in a 16-minute window, between 11.36pm and 11.52pm on Thursday, according to court documents.
Her body was found at home at 1.10am on Friday, police have said."

Looks like they have been able to pin a timeline down already. Perhaps CCTV and/or phone activity/pings (of Kristie's and/or his) have allowed some accuracy with the times.

I think in another case we found out that these kind of people are kept in prison as long as meds can keep them under control. If meds alone do not work, then they get shipped off to a psych facility.

However, as tgy said, it does seem like he could be angling for that. Probably less likely to get beat up for murdering a baby's mother in a psych facility.

"THE man accused of killing new mother Kristie Powell in her Wollongong home, this morning smiled, laughed and waved during his first court appearance after being charged with murder.
...... Mr Kirkman grinned from ear to ear before repeatedly mouthing “hello” to members of the media and waving both hands enthusiastically."

Little baby Slater is being loved very much at this tough, tough time ....

At the moment, Slater is staying with Ms Powell’s brother Ryan, his wife Michelle and their children.

Yesterday, Michelle took to Facebook to post a photo of Slater sleeping, writing, “You are loved, you are safe, we are blessed.”
She wrote: “He is a dream who is eating, sleeping and smiling. Having him with us has helped at this really horrible time.”

In an earlier post she detailed how Ms Powell’s loved ones were coping with the tragedy by posting a picture of the family standing on a riverbank after they had been swimming.
“Yesterday we managed to find a ray of sunshine in a really tough day,” she captioned the picture, later adding they were heading home to “snuggle a special little man who is so loved”.

Ch7 News video here ... states that it was public information and security video that led police to Kirkman. They caught him as he was running out to the road from a demountable building near Maitland train station.

What pic are you talking about? The one on the video preface where he is walking a dog?
If so, I think that pic would have been taken when he was working for Kristie in the Woolongong area several years ago.

On google maps there appears many outhouses around the station.
Yes, a signal station and an electricity box thingo. The river runs parallel to and behind the main street, the station is in the opposite direction. I know it well.

where he was camped is mere metres from a very very busy park.it is a hub of mums and bubs, kids parties ,school holiday time actually be 10 fold. plus the town pool is there as well.
he would have been able to see the park activity from his hideaway.
disturbing he was attempting to cross the road.

across the road is the park.
so glad he has been apprehended!

can no believe someone so mentally disturbed and dangerous slips through the system .
kristies death should never have happened.

Maitland train station always has really strange people hanging out there. It is the last station that has half hourly trains from Newcastle. Most trains terminate there and only three a day go on to Singleton and Muswellbrook and even less to Dungog on another line.

So those not familiar with the area (like me) can visually see the type of area in which he was apprehended.
There are two road bridges and one pedestrian bridge near the station ... he was apparently spotted at a demountable building/under a bridge near the station prior to being apprehended while trying to cross a road.

I imagine police may have been watching him for a while, waiting for him to emerge so they could safely nab him.

So glad to see Baby Slater surrounded by so many who will love him and care for him. He’ll be ok.

Such a sad, sad story.

Yes, I hope so. And in turn I think he will bring joy to those who love him, with his baby antics and perhaps a few characteristics of his dear mum.

Telarah Station is just a short distance up the track from Maitland. Most of the trains go through to Telarah these days and turn around and head back to Newcastle. That's if they are not continuing North. The western suburbs have expanded.
