Hero cop who shot Bondi terrorist identified

The hero police officer who shot Bondi Beach terrorist Sajid Akram has been identified as Detective Senior Constable Cesar Barraza.

Barraza, a Bondi-based detective, fired at gunmen Sajid and his son Naveed Akram from about 40 metres away as the pair shot indiscriminately at members of the Jewish community gathered at Sunday’s Hanukkah event.

Barraza’s shots are believed to have killed Sajid, 50, and wounded Naveed, 24. Critical incident investigators interviewed Barraza on Wednesday morning and continue to review body worn footage of the mass shooting.

Investigators will continue to analyse the police response and the shooting of the father and son. While Barraza is believed to have fired the shot that killed Sajid, a ballistics review is likely to confirm which of the officers’ weapons fired the bullet that killed the 50-year-old.

Barraza, a former cybercrime squad detective, had been working on Sunday and rushed to the beach amid the chaos.

A Timeline of Rising Antisemitism in Australia Since the Gaza War

The subsequent sixteen months were sullied by firebombing, arson, graffiti, and hate speech incidents that prompted Mike Burgess, the Director-General of the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO), to proclaim that his top priority in terms of threat to life is antisemitism.

Australia, a country of 28 million people, is home to about 117,000 Jews. Figures from the Executive Council of Australian Jewry (ECAJ) show that antisemitic incidents in Australia have reached historically high levels, at “almost five times the average annual number before October 7, 2023.” The group documented 1,654 anti‑Jewish incidents across Australia between Oct. 1, 2024, and Sept. 30, 2025, in addition to 2,062 incidents nationwide the year before.

Sunday’s attack at Bondi Beach, Sydney, on the first day of Hanukkah killed at least 12 and injured 30 people, including two police officers.
Thank you, @drsleuth .

What a necessary reminder.

It has become so dangerous there, and why? Most Jewish communities are just trying to make it through the day. Why constantly harass them???

Australia was seen as a safe place to go for those who survived the Holocaust. Many of the Jewish community there are likely their descendants.

Yet here we are again, Jews being murdered for being Jewish.

From your linked article ..

If any victims of the Bondi attack were to launch civil action against Sajid’s estate, assets from the home would not be available due to its ownership by Verna.

Sure sounds as if they had been planning for a while. Property transfer in Feb 2024, training trip to the Philippines in Nov 2025.

Bondi terrorism suspect to face criminal charges

Bondi Beach terrorism suspect Naveed Akram is expected to face a suite of criminal charges on Wednesday after the devastating attack in which he and his father allegedly killed 15 people and injured dozens more.

Akram had been in a coma in hospital under police guard and woke on Tuesday evening. He is expected to be charged on Wednesday, with more details to be confirmed by NSW Police.

He is expected to face a range of charges related to terrorism, including acts in preparation for a terrorism act and undertaking an act of terrorism.”

“Akram will also likely face murder, attempted murder and weapons-related charges. Only his father was licensed to own firearms.”

“Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Wednesday said there had been “real issues” with Australia’s intelligence systems.

Asked on ABC Radio National if intelligence agencies had missed something, or let the country down, he said: “Well, quite clearly … there have been real issues.”

“We need to examine exactly the way that systems work. We need to look back at what happened in 2019. This person was looked at, the assessment that was made.”

I really feel for Detective Senior Constable Cesar “Cess”

He had just been in a heated gun fight with 2 terrorists , which he shot one dead & critically wounded another & in which he was shot at multiple times, (thankfully none hitting him ) than had to deal with the "brawling" on the bridge by "by standers " , probably wondering if the back pack the "father" had had a bomb in it, watching a fellow police officer give CRP to one of the terrorists & than not being able to discuss any of this with anyone ( other than the investigating police ) .

That's a lot to process . Than comes all the inquires & his ( & all other police's ) every action will be scrutinised under a microscope ( ie the inquest ) Even thou he did the right thing. I saw the absolute hell they were all put thru at the Lindt Siege inquest...............

At least we know his name , unlike Officer "A" Ben Besant ( TOU officer who shot Monis ) who had to fight for his name to be allowed to be known for 10 years!!!

I had first read about the question of whether enough of a police presence was at the event in a German news source. It was paywalled and in a language besides English... here is an Australian one that everyone should be able to access.

Seems nothing was learnt from The Lindt Siege - Monis was out on bail for accessory to murder & multiple ( in the 40's ) sexual assault charges , recent calls to ant-terrorist hotline re his website , well known to police & the courts ( had sent vile letters to our dead soldiers families ) .........they never could trace the gun he had either.

I thought things may have changed.....................

And his father had a front ammo pouch on. Worn in front for quick access to the ammo. It was pointed out in one of the recent articles or videos.

When I read about it I thought 'that is what the Philippines training taught them'.

imo

From the article -

When Stop the Threat was introduced, the NSW Police Association called for every general duties police car to carry so-called long arms firearms, which would allow police to aim at active shooters from a longer and safer distance. They’re used in New Zealand (which does not arm its officers with pistols) and Canada.

‘Maximum carnage’: Lindt hero on Bondi terror weapons

Police hero Ben Besant warns the Bondi gunmen showed the same calculated planning as the Lindt terrorist, with both attacks designed for “maximum carnage”.

The police sniper who took out Lindt Cafe terrorist Man Monis says the Bondi massacre shared chilling similarities to the siege 10 years ago.
Lindt hero Ben Besant said the gunmen in both horrors had an allegiance to ISIS, had come under notice of authorities, used similar firearms and had well-researched locations for “maximum impact”.

The massacre brings back bad memories for the specialist cop who shot and killed Monis who was armed with a pump action shotgun.

Mr Bessant said the scoped rifle seen in the footage allows for “accurate long range shooting”, up to 100m and beyond.

The shotgun allows for more close range engagements with “maximum carnage to potentially multiple targets at once”.

Effective at close range, it can hit “right in front of you out to 10 or so metres” and can also have specialised ammunition that allows for longer ranged shots out to 25 metres.

“A straight pull action shotgun essentially works similar to a pump action shotgun with a magazine capacity of up to seven rounds,” Mr Bessant said.

“This allows for multiple rounds to be fired in quick succession causing maximum carnage.

So stupid, dangerous (as they could have gotten shot) and pointless.
Not their place to take anything into their own hands plus there were plenty of armed officers there at that time.

Audio analysis of the 10-minute video by Nathan Ruser, analyst at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, estimates that at least 103 shots were fired, with about 83 coming from the two attackers. Those figures were corroborated by the Financial Review’s analysis.

It is unclear, however, how many shots were fired in the minutes before the video was recorded.

(Keeping in mind that Chris Minns says that the actual shootings took place over 6½ minutes)
