A mass panic erupted today at Bondi Beach during Hanukkah festivities, as unconfirmed reports suggest a shooting and multiple fatalities. Around 2,000 members of the Jewish community were gathered for the celebration when the incident occurred. Opposition Leader Kelly Sloane was about to address the crowd, and David Ossip, head of the Jewish Board of Deputies, was speaking when people suddenly began fleeing in terror.
Sky News reporter on the scene, Sky, described the chaotic scene: "People just started to race away. Everyone, including me, is hiding in a back garden of a nearby house."


Witnesses reported hearing up to 50 gunshots near Campbell Parade, and there are also reports of stabbings. At least six people are believed to have been injured. The situation remains unclear, but authorities have confirmed a significant police presence, and emergency services are responding to the scene.
The large crowd, including families and community leaders, was evacuated immediately, and the area is now under lockdown as police investigate the motives behind the violence. While the exact number of casualties is still unknown, initial reports suggest multiple fatalities.

Police have urged people to take shelter and avoid the area as officers respond to the situation.
"Anyone at the scene should take shelter," NSW Police have said in a statement.
"Police are on scene and more information will be provided when it comes to hand."
The alert came just before 7pm.
The situation is developing rapidly.

Australia doesn't have a huge Jewish population, but I believe one of the oldest and most well established communities is in the Bondi area.

I know mass shootings are common in other places, but not here. Here they are rare, and national news.

I can't imagine the heartbreak at this happening at a time of celebration. May their memories be a blessing.

Local media name the gunmen as Sajid Akram, 50, who died at the scene, and Naveed Akram, 24, who's in a critical condition. They reportedly had links to the Islamic State group.

"Two people are in police custody at Bondi Beach; however, the police operation is ongoing and we continue to urge people to avoid the area," police said in an X post.

It has to be terrorism. When I first read 'party' I thought a private gathering, but then I read that politicians and the media were there and there were two thousand people! No doubt some police were there already just for crowd control and security reasons; they tend to be for large events, especially when senior politicians are present.

More than 25 ambulance resources sent to scene​

NSW Ambulance says more than 25 resources have been dispatched to the scene at Bondi including medial teams, ambulances, helicopters and special operations units.

They’re treating multiple patients at the scene and have transported four to St Vincent’s hospital, one to RPA and one to St George.

The image I've seen of a gun seemed to be a shotgun (ABC). Shotguns are brutal at close range. You don't have to have good aim to hit people, and they do a lot of damage.
