This is a rude awakening. I didn’t believe that radicalisation could happen in Australia, especially given its strict immigration laws, yet it clearly does, unnoticed by police, involving individuals driven by extreme religious or political ideologies willing to sacrifice their lives for it.
I also wonder about the access to the rifles, gun laws are very strict here.
Not necessarily unnoticed, many times when this happens it turns out that the terrorist(s) was/were known to police already. IIRC when the Manchester bombing happened here in the UK, it transpired that the attacker's neighbours had been reporting him for some time to no avail. And the Southport attacker more recently had been referred to the 'Prevent' de-radicalisation programme multiple times ☹️

I think that gun they showed on ABC news for sure belonged to the shooter. The palm tree and path the civilian placed it at when the shooter ran off looks exactly the same.

I know heroics get people killed the vast majority of the time, but I don't think there's any question that civilian saved lives. And all he did was disarm the guy. He didn't kill him, though he could have. That takes courage, too.

MOO
Absolutely!

The chap should be knighted for bravery, quite honestly.

I've just seen that video. Incredibly brave.

Should have shot him, though!
I still don't think it would have been his place to shoot him. The hero would have been very shaken up and might not have been confident in using a gun

A shooter of Middle Eastern appearance, with a black flag, opens fire on a Jewish celebration. Doesn't really take a genius to work this one out.
Indeed!

Looking closer at the pic, what is it he has round his waist? He has a rifle but appears to have shotgun cartridges on his belt?

Akram was shot, arrested and remains in custody, where he is being treated by emergency services.

The other gunman was shot dead at the scene.

Ten people have died, including children and at least 17 injured after the horrific attack.

That's a Blaser R8 - I think?

Not cheap.

Presser is on right now ... the NSW Premier is saying that there are now 12 deceased. :(

Police Commissioner says that 29 others transported to various hospitals - including two police officers.

They are investigating whether there is a 3rd offender.

All afternoon i complained to my daughter i had a sick feeling in my stomach something was wrong and had the worst anxiety - until i saw the news and it dawned on me my spirit sensed this. This is devestating for us Australians trying to live in what we believed to be a peaceful country. These Radicals are taking away our safety to even go out on a sunday afternoon with our families, or even allow our older kids to go out on their own. How is this happening here?!?!?!

Australian police: a vehicle found at Bondi Beach has several IEDs in it(from press conference)

The police knew "a little" about the deceased offender. Not someone they were looking at, at the time.

They have a car linked to deceased offender. Potential explosive devices inside his vehicle.

Both police officers seriously injured and in surgery.

Too early to report on guns, where they came from, or any details really.

They want Australians divided and at each others throats. We can't let that happen.

A National Security Committee meeting was immediate.

Albanese (PM) now saying this was a terrorist attack.

The one pic I've seen looked like a Blaser R8. An unusual choice, imo. Suggests either it's legally held or stolen from somewhere. Just guesswork at this point, though.

The picture of the gun taken off that one guy by the civilian was definitely a shotgun, pump action. And there's shotgun shells everywhere in the pictures of the bridge. More than that I couldn't say, I am not a gun person. My exposure is limited to weapons I saw as a child owned by a family member which were rifles, and what's on tv. Maybe one of the gun folks on here will know. The best I know is that it doesn't look sawn off.

Semi-auto shotgun, by the looks of it.

The rifle was a Blaser with a muzzle-brake, I think.

"Financial Review political editor Phil Coorey asks Mike Burgess whether any of the shooters were on ASIO watchlists.
(ASIO = Australian Security Intelligence Organisation)

Burgess says it's too early to provide those sorts of details, but "like the NSW Police, one of these individuals was known to us, but not in an immediate-threat perspective, so we need to look into what happened here". "

Semi auto and pump action shotguns are a Category C or D license. You really need a good, provable, very specific reason from a very short list of acceptable reasons to legally own one. I doubt it's legal. Stolen or black market.

I have no idea about the rifle.
