Mother of young shooter speaks out​

The mother of the 24-year-old gunman involved in the Bondi Beach mass shooting has revealed what he told her hours beforehand.

She said her son claimed he had gone to Jervis Bay with his father for the weekend, providing an update on Sunday morning.

“He rings me up and said, ‘Mum, I just went for a swim. I went scuba diving. We’re going … to eat now’,” she told the Sydney Morning Herald.

She added she was shocked by her son’s involvement in the incident as he seemingly didn’t do anything wrong.

“He doesn’t have a firearm. He doesn’t even go out. He doesn’t mix around with friends. He doesn’t drink, he doesn’t smoke, he doesn’t go to bad places,” the mother said.

“He goes to work, he comes home, he goes to exercise, and that’s it.

“Anyone would wish to have a son like my son … he’s a good boy.”

Assuming that she didn't know anything about their plans prior, I deeply feel for this mother.

It would be so confusing and heartbreaking to find out the child you thought you knew so well had become mass murderer and terrorist. She must be absolutely reeling right now

Thank you, @BetteDavisEyes! I am ethnically Jewish but grew up in a mostly secular home. We lit Hanukkah candles each year and I can repeat that prayer by heart just from childhood memory, but I don't recall ever seeing the words written out before.

Thats two terrorist attacks on the jewish community on holy days in the last couple of months - firstly Manchester now this.

NSW health minister says death toll may rise

Following the update from NSW Health on the injured patients being treated across nine Sydney hospitals, the NSW minister, Ryan Park, has spoken to 2GB.

Emergency services have said 42 people were taken to hospital after the attack – two people, including one child, died overnight and two people have been discharged.

There are now 38 people being treated in hospital, with seven people in a critical condition, while another four are in a critical but stable condition.

Park says people may need to be prepared for the death toll to rise. 16 people have been confirmed dead, including one of the alleged gunmen.


We’ve got a number of people who are in very, very serious and critical ways in terms of where they are at the moment, and that’s something that we are preparing for, but we are giving them the very best opportunity to recover.


I’m confident in the skill and dedication of our frontline clinicians and our paramedics who perform miracles at the pre-hospital situation, and now those in the hospital working miracles for them.

Yes, it comes across as tone deaf and heartless but right now all she can think about is what's happening to her child. She's blinded by her duty as a mother and the love she has for the child she raised. Deep down that's probably all that matters to her right now.

It's probably too much to possibly handle if she were to allow herself to consider and truly take in what her son and his father have done. She's probably in a state of shock and denial and immense grief for what's happened.

Don't forget that people aren't usually rational and eloquent with their word choice during traumatic experiences.

She's very likely just a victim too, in her own unique way.

About five other people staying at an Airbnb in Campsie where the two gunmen were also staying have returned this morning. Police have brought out bags of their belongings so they can find somewhere else to stay.

A listing on Booking.com shows a room in the house can be rented for $70 a night.

I don't know much about Australia's first responder practices, but in the US there are often multiple hospitals in a region that are part of a mass casualty incident plan. I assume it's similar in the Sydney area - they probably don't want to have 1 or 2 hospitals overwhelmed.

It may also depend on what the injuries were. For example, an injury to a limb is not going to be treated the same way as one to the head, or trunk.

Anecdote: My first college roommate later became an RN, and she was living in Oklahoma City in 1995. When we reconnected online, I asked if she was involved with the rescue operation, and she said that her hospital got 6 people with minor injuries; it was the farthest one from the Murrah Building, it did not have a trauma center, and in her case, she worked in OB. This same hospital later filled up after the 1999 Moore tornado, and she was not accustomed to caring for 50-year-old men with broken legs, but OB was where they put people when the other wards filled up.

She later helped with the cleanup, and said that the stories about the smell were absolutely true. She described it as "the smell of hell."

I found out a while back that she died in 2018. RIP, LRM.

BTW, the Good Samaritan, who I recommend be nominated for an honorary Nobel Peace Prize, is named Ahmed al Ahmed.

The mood in Bondi​

There’s a somber mood at the Bondi Pavillion, south of where the attack took place.

Political leaders and members of the community have been arriving throughout the morning to lay flowers and pay their respects to the victims.

Dozens of people have now gathered silently on the nearby lawn overlooking the makeshift memorial.

People here have told us how they ran for their lives from an area close to here. They still can’t comprehend the terror that has struck their community.
