Australia - Russell Hill & Carol Clay Murdered While Camping - Wonnangatta Valley, 2020 #9

This was detailed in Greg Haddrick’s book “In the dead of night”. Not sure how true it is as that’s the only place I’ve seen it. There is some fantastical stuff in there.
Correct. I heard it in a 2 part podcast interview Haddrick did with Gary Jubelin and I did wonder myself about the veracity of some of his claims.

Close range? How many ricochets hit the victim at close range?

Behind a paywall, I think. Posting it here for those who subscribe.

Something I wasn't quite sure of. Says Carol was shot in the head at close range :(

An accident, sure...
The Australian, in their little summary you get without subscribing, refer to a 'new book' about this case. I assume it is Greg Haddrick's book "In The Dead Of Night."

There are shortcuts above to the 2 part podcast interview Haddrick recently did with Gary Jubelin. Well worth a listen.

What is that mentioned in the Part 2 summary above about a BEE STING?? I must have missed that.

Whilst the pandemic was with us, there were very limited flights and a lot of pilots weren't working, including Greg. That situation was coming to an end and Greg would have probably started flying again. This raised a fairly large predicament for the police as they can't have a person they suspect of a double murder flying the public around.

During the pandemic and whilst he wasn't able to fly, Greg took up the hobby of bee-keeping. Just before he was due to start flying again he was stung by one of his bees and it caused an anaphylactic reaction which meant he wouldn't be able to fly for 6 months, i think it was.

A lucky break for the police! They could continue collaborating their evidence for a bit longer and not arrest him prematurely.

A different take on a Police sting operation!

Lurking under the xmas tree is that very book, and accidentally, the wrapping came off and I read it all last night.. ( I re wrapped it at dawn this morning, no one knows) A very exhilarating read , especially when it got to the bit about the Testra Metadata from the Registration Reading Camera at Dinner Plain, and Mt Hotham.. there he is, the only vehicle travelling towards Bright, with Russells' cell phone in his car, still on, ( he had both Russell and Carols phone in his car ) .. Russel's phone is still ON , with the drone attached, happily tracking Lynn as faithfully as any old bird dog would. !!

Lynn did not check to see if it was turned off. !!

This does not bode well for other murderers who forget to turn things off.... I'm looking at Ballarat murderers, in this respect...

request it from your local library.

I found Haddrick's book so much better than Robin Bowles personally.

A lot of stuff in there we didn't know about. ie being stung by his bee's &, than not being able to fly for 6 months etc, allowing the cops to continue "listening" to GL

Fascinating read.

You've all inspired me!

I've just ordered the Haddrick book from Big W, my Christmas present to me.
$22 which is not too bad, Click and Collect so no delivery fee.

Oh and I used vouchers from doing surveys so really it's free, apart from my time and effort.

I wonder if Greg has saved up his penny's from printing number plates to purchase it and find out how they caught him in the end?

Lynn had 60% chance of getting away with this double murder, stranger on stranger killing, in a most isolated and difficult part of Australia,....Nothing that linked a man from Caroline Springs, with a woman from Pakenham and a man from Drouin , who''s abandoned campsite, burned out in the Alpine National Park was stumbled upon days later...

VICPOL had absolutely nothing to work with in the beginning, yet working in a methodical and systematic manner, not unlike Lynn's own obsession with lists of what to do each day , VICPOL whittled down the possibilities into probabilities.. a tremendous effort, under lockdown conditions, too, Victoria being a hard lockdown state, and thank Andrews for that. Lynn can spend years thinking about it. He has to keep track of his own story, too, .. not much of which I believe.

But killers often have the last say about people's endings of the life they take... a great horror. Still.. he can think about it in Port Philip Correctional, while fending off some really horrible killers, just like him, but even stupider. And tougher .

Funny you should say that because I know there is a copy under own tree too. I know that because my wife and I work off wish lists and my daughter, who drew me in our Chris cringle, got the good oil on what I 'need.'

The book I am currently reading is on course to be finished right on time too.

From memory, in Haddrick's podcast interview with Jubelin, he said Lyn probably assumed that because they were leaving an area of virtually zero phone coverage/service that the victims' phones wouldn't be an issue and perhaps even just assumed they would be off.

Logisitics!!... that was probably a good call, right up until he hit the road block ( because of the colossal fires previously, and had to do a u-turn, with the trailer, and go back and around and UP OVER Victoria the long way home, via Mt Hotham, and Myrtleford. ) . if that road had been open, he'd have been home with out any camera stuff, or tower relay.. he just ran into karma, bad luck, fate, whatever .... as it was, he drove RIGHT INTO 4 camera's set up to pin point those who leave Mt Hotham resort without paying the toll fee.... the good citizens of Dinner Plain would not last a minute without their phones, so there are towers from Omeo to Wangaratta. :p It must have slipped his mind.

The ghastliness of driving with the two bodies from out of Bucks Creek all that way is too hideous.

Ordered the book at 10.58, just got the email that it's ready to be collected.

Maybe tomorrow, I'm in the mood for housework today and it might be just a passing phase :)

In his mind a necessary job that had to be done...

I'm sure he gives himself credit that he was able to do what was "needed" to maintain his lifestyle.

Just be aware that much of the juicy stuff in Greg Haddrick's book could be fiction. Really detailed conversations, that clearly cannot have been recorded for his purposes, and he admits that he has 'imagined' some of the dialogue. There is also at least one item presented as fact that is absolutely incorrect, so take it with a grain of salt and enjoy it as entertainment, not as gospel.
