Nowhere Child inquest delayed to assist William’s biological parents

The inquest, which sat for a week in March, had been scheduled to resume next Monday but has been delayed until August 7, with extra sitting days in the NSW mid-north coast town of Taree added to the schedule, apparently to allow for the questioning of child sex offenders who live in the area.

The family told The Australian in an interview for Nowhere Child that they’d been advised not to bother with a lawyer “because we weren’t there when he went missing”.

“We didn’t know that we wouldn’t be able to ask any questions,” William’s nana told The Australian.

“We didn’t know that my son — William’s father — would be cross-examined without one.”

Legal Aid NSW offered to fund a lawyer, after being advised that the family didn’t have one and couldn’t afford one.

That headline makes it sound like it's their inquest :rolleyes::rolleyes:

Wonder why she thought it was to start yesterday.

Yes, bad reporting, especially for The Australian.

Poor Gary what a sad end to his career. I really believe he was one of the good guys in NSW police.

A defiant Jubelin said he had a lawful right to carry out the conversations and it was known by police at the time the recordings were made

The ousted head detective in the search for William Tyrrell has slammed the criminal case against him as an 'incredible waste of time' in a defiant spray.

Gary Jubelin warned 'I'm not broken' outside court on Tuesday, after he pleaded not guilty to four charges of allegedly making four unlawful recordings.

Jubelin said the recordings were made for the investigation into missing William, who vanished from Kendall, on the NSW mid north coast, on September 12, 2014.

'I had a lawful right and operational need to record those conversations,' Jubelin said in a fiery statement on the steps of Sydney's Downing Centre Local Court.

I wonder. He has stated time and again that he will not give up on finding William. 'Im not broken.' He isn't going away. I think there are a few who should be very afraid of what will do now. I wonder what options there are now for someone like him. I doubt celebrity speaker is high on his list.

I read in the weekend papers that he is going to do some advocacy work and is in talks to write a book. Actually he is appearing as a speaker at BAD19, the Sydney Crime Writers’ Festival. The topic? The victims’ detective.

Go Jubes!

And from the same link:

Mark Leveson described Jubelin as someone who 'wanted to catch bad guys, lock them up and give the victims much needed answers'.

'We feel that his success and high profile have embarrassed and upset a number of over ambitious superiors who have placed their own careers before the task they were sworn to do.

'These superiors have made one huge mistake - they have underestimated all of us'.

They certainly have underestimated us. The petition supporting Jubes is up to 12,000-odd signatures.

According the the Court List he's No 56 - so it might be a while before we hear anything

Search NSW Court Lists | NSW Online Registry
I know that things are at least somewhat different here (Canada), but I have discovered that here, the order in which cases get called, seems to depend upon the seniority of the defence lawyer in each case.. therefore the most experienced lawyers (usually also the eldest lawyers) would be up first with their client(s), and those without legal representation would be called after all of the lawyers have been up already with their clients and then in somewhat of alpha order for the remainder. Also if there might be a special request from a lawyer to be called as early as possible, such as he/she is from out of town, or has another hearing somewhere, etc. Glad we didn't have to wait long to hear the short adjournment to the next date. From the sounds of it, GJ has not yet even had the opportunity to see the disclosure: "Mr Jubelin’s barrister, former high profile prosecutor Margaret Cunneen SC, told the Downing Centre Local Court Mr Jubelin would be pleading not guilty and asked for brief of evidence from police “without delay”." I think you'll find that the Judge brought GJ's case forward in the list, because of the number of supporters in court that didn't get a seat and wouldn't leave. IMO
(from someone I know that was there)

‘One-in-a-million police officer'

The group of supporters included Mark and Faye Leveson, whose son Matthew's disappearance was investigated by Mr Jubelin.

"We feel that his success and high profile have embarrassed and upset a number of overambitious superiors who placed their own careers before the task they were sworn to do," Mr Leveson said.

"I hope these police superiors are proud of themselves, because they will have questions to answer once Gary's matter is finalised."

Mr Leveson said he and his wife could not conceive what it would be like to lose their "go-to person" during an inquest into their son's murder, and it was "bloody disgusting" that this had happened to William Tyrrell's family.

Leonie Duroux, an aunt of one of the murdered Bowraville children, whose case was also investigated by Mr Jubelin, said the charges should be dropped.

"It's a witch hunt. They're leaving victims families in the lurch and it's not fair," she said.

"He's a one-in-a-million police officer — it's tall poppy syndrome at its best."

BIBM - Always that it was professional jealousy and probably a bit of politics thrown in. IMO

It’ll be interesting to find out just who they are once this has gone to court.
