These would have been easily retrieved l would think? Police knew about them very early on. IMO those messages have nothing to do with William.
As the phones (and computers) were taken by Hans Rupp's team for forensic testing, I would think that means that the content was looked at for anomalies, for deleted items that were still retrievable (by the police using the forensic software).
And we know the house phone records were obtained - due to the timeline of calls that morning - so it would make sense that the mobile phones' records were also obtained.
The telco could do a deep dive for whatever else they want, with a warrant.
