Justin Lum's guest (judge MacDonald) thinks that if Lori is found guilty in Charles' case (which he believes will happen very quickly), the prosecution will move to dismiss Brandon's case for judicial economy. IMO Lori would see this as a victory, but it would also deprive her of attention.
If that does come up for discussion it will be interesting to hear what BB's feelings are about it.
After this trial he and others may just want LVD to go far,far away, like forever.

imo

She'll still have her appeal(s) and possible media interviews.
Knowing the media they'll still give her a platform to spew.
Not the same as having a courtroom as your stage but still something to feed her evil soul.

imo

For Brandon's case - I am guessing all the Status hearings for this case are to go along with the trial.

Since the deaths of TD, TR & JJ were not introduced in the trial can the jurors in deliberations discuss what they think/believe happened to them and if LVD is connected to the deaths?

Or since there was no evidence presented about them being gone it's a no-no during deliberations?

I think she's just delusional enough to make her dangerous, not enough to make her crazy, if that makes sense.

Extreme belief doesn't get people off if they act on violent impulses. Just look at the Manson girls, serving fifty plus years. They believed, and they laughed as they killed, believing it would bring on the end times. They sang at the trial and held hands, walking into court smiling like space cadets. They enjoyed what they did, all of it, murder and trial, and so did Lori.

When it all comes down to the brass tacks with Lori, everything she did was very, very worldly. She murdered for convenience, out of spite, for profit, and for infidelity. Did she believe the stories she told herself that God told her it was okay? Possibly. But that's the danger of a religion that tells you to listen to the 'still small voice' and what it tells you is God's wishes for you. If what you're actually listening to is your selfish desires, but you've decided that it's God's plan you're tapped into, then we end up... here. With four people dead, two children buried in a backyard, and Chad and Lori dancing on a beach in Hawaii, having abandoned all their prepper plans surrounding Rexburg.

Interesting you mention the case of Manson and his followers. A couple days ago, I listened to an interview of Leslie Van Houten. I think it was conducted by her attorney at the time. I’d been thinking of similarities of that case with this and Manson using the ideology of “helter-skelter” to influence his followers, and considered that it was a useful tool to him - not because he actually believed it, but because of the power of the idea if others could be influenced to believe it

Ms. Van Houten said that she had occasionally used LSD in her mid-teens, but with that only occasional use, she could still function well in school and work. But once with Manson’s group, they were using LSD frequently (3-4 times a week) and she said that that, combined with spending time exclusively with other members (isolated from other influences that might have served as a reality check) and immersing themselves in the music Manson played and the activities he ordered (including promiscuous sex with everyone in the group) really screwed up their sense of reality…they were increasingly living in an alternate reality.

I know there have been studies that compare hallucinogenic drug experiences with types of religious mysticism. Depending on how immersed someone is in such experiences, and to the exclusion of other influences, I can definitely see how some individuals - especially if they aren’t well-grounded in reason and exercise of some healthy skepticism - might also become vulnerable to losing touch with reality and prey to opportunistic manipulators (as I believe Lori and Chad are) just as the drug-influenced Manson followers were. And especially so in times when the world seems to be rapidly changing, socially and technologically - so that people might feel generally unsettled and in fear of what the future brings.

I think you’re right that if a person’s or a community’s regular faith practices include encouragement in listening to that small voice inside and recognizing it as God - especially without exercising the humility to understand that, being human, you may be wrong, and without testing what you’ve “heard” against the input of reliable influences - then that person or community might be easily led astray. It’s why any institution or community needs to encourage its members to develop a strong sense of reasoning balanced with humility and to always allow room for doubt - particularly when exercising any kind of power over the lives of others.

ETA: It’s not just chance that Chad, and later Lori, found so many willing dupes in their PAP and AVOW groups. They were primed to believe.

The questionnaires are going out electronically, they will review the responses received that day. And yeah trial start dates include voir dire.

I wonder if LVD did ingest something that gave her a mystical awakening, or at least that's how she interpreted it, and that made it easy then for her to concoct and arrange from her actual religious background a new world order based on herself.

She didn't use that language with LE, didn't defend it at trial, instead suggesting others (like Duncan were just guessing, never bothered to ask anyone what the terms meant and AlexC who was just a kidder). So it's a powerful realm where she is translated, an elevated goddess who is charged with collecting the 24 but.... what? She can't talk about it in mixed company? Except for the times she did. But what's the big secret? Shouldn't she OWN it with LE so they treat her as the diety she has selected herself to be?

Seems more likely that she's smart (smart enough, in any case) to manipulate those around her, by exploiting their faith.

Keith Morrison is probably done with her. IIRC, Nate Eaton stopped talking to her.

Just letting a few brain marbles roll around...

Clearly, it is in our self-interest to study what conditions may contribute to psychopathy and the purposeful manipulation of others. I think organized religion is a great place to harbor these dysfunctions because they have the unknown to fill in as they choose. No shade to organized religion.

All just my opinion- How do you stimulate these behaviors in a person with whatever genetics may predispose them to pschopathy?

1. Focus on superficial appearance at the expense of lived experience. It is better to look good than to be good. Dysfunction does not matter if it is covered with an attractive veneer, and exterior beauty is the most valued trait a person can have.

2. Focus on inauthentic expression of emotions or suppressing emotions . Act happy/perky when you are sad, angry, etc. Our emotions are our translation of what we see in the world. If you distrust and hate your emotions you learn to sever and numb them. A person who is untethered from their own interpretation/language of emotions is vulnerable to manipulation and they lose all internal standards of appropriate behavior. It can turn someone into a puppet or a pure "id" personality. (An aside, I think this also causes much of substance abuse.) We need our feelings.

3. Focus on control as a theme song and hierarchy governs who has control. You are either one of the passengers or the driver. If you do not have the apparent hierarchical privilege, your ONLY option to feel control is to manipulate someone who does. Manipulation is the child of powerlessness, and we all need a sense of agency.

4. Focus on one's specialness regardless of one's contributions or skills, and excuses are made for behavior that violates the social contract. No consequences. "Doesn't count for me" was Lori's refrain. Lori really has not acheived anything in her life (including an enduring loving relationship with her children) and she mines credibility and prestige from the people around her, particularly men. eg-Lori loves to mention that Charles was a semi-pro baseball player.

We need feedback from the other humans to tell us when we've crossed the line. It is the consequences that constitute the feedback. No consquences? No feedback, and no lesson. I think it was Annie Cushing who brilliantly called this a kind of echolocation between humans.

You have to recognize that you are no more or less special than others for this feedback to mean anything to you, though. You also need to echolocate in a community of others who are truthful about the harm you are doing and who care about the harm you are doing. I don't think an organized religion can accomplish this goal unless it is a dynamic rather than just a container made of rules.

I still often think back to when I first heard about JJ and Tylee missing and saw Kay's interview where she said Lori thought she was a Goddess and that her whole family followed her around like they believed she was one.

I thought to myself, that is crazy, I have to see what is up with this. And here I am, at the 3rd trial with the Goddess acting as her own attorney! It's been wild!

So 5/30 IS jury voir dire - and trial actually starts on 6/2 - what if the jury isn't picked on that Friday the 30th? I guess they would go into Monday the 2nd then & on...
and thanks for the response! :)

Voir dire is considered part of the trial by courts, so when they give a trial start date that includes voir dire.

Like this current trial on Charles Vallow had an official start date of March 31, and that's when they started voir dire. Opening arguments started on a later date.

On that note, they only took 2 days to select a jury for the current trial, but I am wondering whether the publicity of this trial will make it take longer to select a jury in the next one. The judge scheduled fewer trial dates for the next one because this one was finished so quickly. But I wonder if maybe they are going to need more days for the next one than the judge gave because of a longer jury selection.

Are we keeping Brandon's trial info here or are we moving to his own thread?

Question:

Does anyone think LVD is actually delusional? Delusions of religion, that is.

She's about as narcissist as they come but does she believe she's some kind of elevated being?

There's nothing divine about elevating your sorry self above everyone else's.

Delusional and calculated are two different things.

I'm just curious how y'all would characterize her.

JMO
Calculated. I do not think she is delusional.

I wonder if she's on the witness list?
I wonder if she is still in touch with Lori. Her mother and sister are, but wouldn't testify in her favor. MBP testified against Chad. I doubt she would go against her aunt. She got out of testifying in Lori's first trial. MBP saw with her own eyes that Tylee and JJ were nowhere to be seen for weeks when she lived nextdoor to Lori in Rexburg, yet she publicly defended Lori. She never said that Lori lied to her about the children's whereabouts.
