This whole “Lori Vallow wants to represent herself” thing is really bothering me. I understand the law and that a defendant has the constitutional right to represent themselves in a criminal trial, as the Supreme Court affirmed in Faretta v. California (1975). The Sixth Amendment guarantees the right to "assistance of counsel," but a defendant can choose to waive that right and proceed pro se—without an attorney. Courts still usually appoint a standby or advisory counsel to help guide them through the trial, though, and that’s where I see a major issue.

The reasoning behind appointing advisory counsel is that representing yourself in a criminal trial is incredibly complex. Courts want to make sure the trial is fair, and that the defendant’s rights aren’t violated just because they don’t have legal expertise. The court-appointed lawyer doesn’t actively represent the defendant in court, but they’re available to offer advice and step in if the defendant needs help or can’t adequately defend themselves. In theory, this respects the defendant’s right to represent themselves while still ensuring the trial process is fair.

But here’s the problem: If a defendant has an attorney available to advise them, are they really "representing themselves"? It seems like a huge loophole, especially when someone like Lori Vallow is allowed to do this. She’s technically representing herself, but she still gets free legal advice from the state. To me, that feels like an unfair advantage. If you want to represent yourself, fine—but then you should be on your own. If you want legal counsel, then let the attorney fully represent you. It shouldn’t be both.

What frustrates me even more is that taxpayers are footing the bill for this advisory counsel. The taxpayer didn’t choose to be part of this case, so why should they pay for Vallow to play the system like this? It seems like a manipulation of the legal process, and it doesn’t sit right with me. If the system allows this kind of exploitation, then it raises questions about whether it's truly
protecting everyone's rights or just opening the door for defendants to game the system.

There needs to be checks and balances in place to determine what’s really at play here. We can’t just let defendants use the system however they want without ensuring that it’s being used fairly, for both the defendant and the public. If we don’t have those safeguards, it undermines the integrity of the entire process.

Long opinionated rant over.
No, my cousins murderer tried to represent himself and got in over his head. That's exactly why the judge allows it with the provision that they have a lawyer on standby to consult. The defendant DOES actually run their own legal strategy and do the talking in court and gets to question witnesses. We may not like it, but that's how the system works.

I think Lori just wants to prolong her time in the spotlight, by whatever means. If she just meekly does what she's told, then she'll be locked away wherever for ever, and eventually most people will forget her. A fate worse than death to Lori!

This whole “Lori Vallow wants to represent herself” thing is really bothering me.
Respectfully snipped by me for focus...

It annoys me as well. Beyond that, I have to wonder what is the sense in even trying this case. She already has been sentenced to life with no possibility of parole so she's never getting out. Why allow her to prance around again and put on a show?

Realistically, it doesn't matter if she's convicted of this killing, too. It just costs taxpayers big bucks that could be used to put other criminals behind bars.

Just let her rot away from the public eye at this point.

I think it's really important to obtain justice for separate victims, and not just say they're already locked away so don't waste money on another trial.

For many reasons.

One is that no one knows if she will find a reason now or in the future to have her earlier convictions or sentence overturned on appeal.

Two is it allows for restitution.

Three is that as it stands Charles Vallow was reported to have been killed because he was threatening the life of Alex Cox and Lori Vallow.

Four is that it has not been proven until there is a trial that it was Alex Cox and his goddess sister who planned to murder Brandon B and took a shot at him. A conviction opens the potential for other co-conspirators to be indicted, such as the person who gave his new address to Alex Cox.

Five is that the crumby police in Arizona need to sharpen up their act and actually investigate shootings and not just believe cookie reports of shootings in self-defense. Particularly when the dead victim was shot again once he was already injured and lying on the ground. Those investigating officers were dreadful.

Because Charles Vallow deserves justice too. The police never believed him when he tried to report her. It's also added insurance should her other conviction be overturned for any reason.

Yeah, the last part really gauls me with her giggling, hair-twirling, "Sorry neighbors".

Had Lori been locked up for Charles's murder- if Arizona PD had actually done their jobs properly and investigated- then Tammy and the children might actually be alive today.

Since there's no statute of limitations on murder, if there was any indication in the future that her conviction might be overturned (highly unlikely), a trial could take place at that time.

But, for me, this is redundant and a waste of taxpayer resources. Plus, it's going to give her a chance to parade around and get more attention, which is what she loves.

It's a win/win for her whether or not she's convicted again because she'll be out of prison prancing around and flipping her hair.

I wouldn't give her that.

Kudos everyone on this thread. LVD is vanity personified. She thinks she is some sort of "rock star", center of attention for everyone. Once again, the world orbits around LVD.

I agree, she should be tried for Charles Vallow's death, and the attempt on Brandon Bordeaux, but it could be murky. The defense here is stronger, due to the direct involvement of AC in the murder of Charles Vallow. Is there enough evidence to convict LVD of the conspiracy?

I still think that Melanie P, should have been arrested, she has managed to skate out of this muck, when I know she was definitely a party in the conspiracy to kill Brandon Bordeaux.

For me, the point is that Chandler PD messed up, and this puts that as proof on the books. This is how protocols and laws change, in the hopes it does not happen again.

Yeah, like not taking the suspect's word for it at the scene of the crime?

Mum had that last year, and she came through it absolutely fine, so don't stress about it or about keeping on top of things here, just heal up and get well soon.
