Just as I feared, they don't seem to hold much value in the lives of murdered Americans. Now in this case, it was two Balinese men who killed the American right? So you'd expect a lesser sentence. Now what will they do with two Americans who killed another American? Like I've said from almost the beginning, not sure they really want to deal with housing HM and TS for any length of time so I'm not expecting much.

They really don't care much about murder in general in that country do they? Drug trafficking and possession seem to have a much bigger penalty.

BBM: Sometimes I don’t think they feel a lot for any death in Bali … murder or otherwise. A few years ago I heard about an Indonesian family who buried a deceased (natural causes) family member in their back yard as they did not want to scrape together the money for a burial. Technically, I don’t think that is allowed - but I don’t believe there were any repercussions on the family for doing so, or that the body was moved.

And there is the mastermind of the Bali bombings still sitting in Guantanamo ... even though Balinese authorities keep asking for him to be returned. There is speculation that the US do not want to deliver him back to Bali for prosecution because they fear Bali will not execute him, and he will be able to carry on his terrorist activities from inside or outside prison.

My only hope for HM & TS is that Bali’s sense of pride steps up, and that they want to make a statement that people cannot come to Bali and murder a family member. You know .. a kind of keep-the-trouble-in-your-own-back-yard-here’s-what-happens-if-you-don’t statement.

I hope they feel that way as well and make an example of these two...especially for lying to authorities the way they did and trying to throw their American "status" around. Perhaps they should be told about Florida's reputation with regards to murder. Which is...if you want to kill someone...do it in Florida where everyone seems to get away with murder. ;)

Now I wish this US duo had smuggled drugs into Bali because then I could count on them getting a very harsh sentence. Killing someone doesn't seem to be taken as seriously which makes no sense to me at all. Why are they so strict on drug smugglers, yet I've read how there's a lot of illegal drugs served in drinks and shakes to tourists in Bali? Why do the schlooies travel there to party? It's confusing. It sounds like there's lots of hidden corruption...is that it?

Shocked in that one case where one man only got 12 years prison time for killing an American, and it sounded somewhat pre-planned to steal from him. No way would I want to be a tourist there.

Might be worth noting: it's nine months from date of offense to conviction in the case of the murdered American. Don't know how long between the murder and the arrest. HM & TS were detained almost immediately, but they refused to cooperate for a few weeks.

The Daily Mail reports today (Sunday, 7 Dec 2014), under the byline of Richard Shears, that Heather Mack and Tommy Schaefer are expected to be transferred to Kerobokan Prison tomorrow.

The article also says that the police have completed their interrogations of the suspects and that formal documents have been transferred to prosecutors, paving the way for prosecution.

If the Mail is to be believed, cops do not credit Heather’s account of what transpired, instead they believe money was at the heart of the crime:

Police claim the pair plotted Mrs Mack’s murder following an earlier argument between Heather and her mother over money.

The article also says that while Heather has copped to something far less than murder, the police are not publicly subscribing to her story and continue to believe there was premeditation:

The account she has given to police - which her lawyer Mr Raja Nasution hopes will result in her receiving a lesser charge - paints a picture of a terrified young woman who waited in terror in the bathroom of room 317 while her boyfriend and her mother had a furious argument which resulted in Mrs Mack being beaten to death.

Senior Police Commissioner Djoko Hariutomo told MailOnline: ‘If they are both convicted of murder they could face the death penalty. There is evidence here of premeditation.’

Heather’s attorney admits that Sheila did not know that Tommy was coming to Bali:

‘Mr Schaefer had arrived at the hotel from the US at two o’clock in the morning of August 12 - just six hours before the murder - and Mrs Mack did not know he was coming,’ said Mr Raja.

Perhaps himself in a public relations trance, Heather’s lawyer said:

‘Heather acted robot-like,’ said Mr Raja. ‘She wanted no part of what had happened but Mr Schaefer was the father of her child and she went along as if in a trance when he forced Mrs Mack’s body into the suitcase.’

Heather may not fancy Hotel Kerobokan:

A police spokesman said today that Miss Mack will continue to be under medical observation while in Kerobokan Prison because she is pregnant.

It is understood she will have to share a cell with several other women prisoners because the jail is overcrowded.

The so-called "Breaking News" channel on YouTube covers a bit of what was in the Daily Mail story, with a computerized voice reading the script! It had no views when I first saw it (I guess that means I was the first to be annoyed by it), and I have no idea what the possible market for such stuff is. But since there's been such a dearth of news, I pass along even this execrable tidbit:

Great day in the morning, Orange Tabby...thank you! I'm having my morning coffee fresh from the french press, watching the sun come up in a pink sky on a Sunday morning where the day promises nothing but pleasant Christmasy tasks and now two posts in one morning after such a long drought, it's good to finally hear there is at least some movement and progress. I am very intrigued by the repeated use of the word "premeditation" in the article.

Thanks for the link Orange Tabby :)

Legal sources on the holiday island told MailOnline that police interrogations of the pair have been completed and papers have been passed to the prosecution, allowing 19-year-old Heather Mack and her 21-year-old boyfriend Tommy Schaefer to be moved from police prisons.
They will then await a court appearance when they are expected to be charged with premeditated murder.

Finally some news!! I wonder if we'll get any pictures of the transfer from the Bali news stations tomorrow?

"In order to appease her mother, Heather suggested he go to her room and take with him a gift."

So they want us to believe that HM was concerned about Social Etiquette?

Yes...she was so concerned about social etiquette that she felt that this would also be appropriate while her mother was sleeping. Or at least trying to sleep. Since it was only 6 hours after the original argument. Uh huh. :notgood:

So it appears that at least they will be able to spend the time in Kerobokan together. Looks like the "cells" are really just bedrooms for these prisoners and they are probably only locked into them at night? This gentlemen plans to write a book about his experience...

http://www.smh.com.au/national/true...hellhole-kerobokan-prison-20140330-35pws.html

And as we've been hearing...

But he also reveals a jail where international inmates - known as ''bules'', the Indonesian word for Westerners - can live a lifestyle he calls ''luxury, Kerobokan-style''.

Such prisoners are readily able to access contraband smartphones, internet, secreted laptops and plasma televisions.

But that takes money to grease the many palms involved to make it thru the various channels I imagine are a part of that. We know Tommy's money will be limited at best. On the other hand, do we think Heathelr has an independent source of money apart from any that belonged to her mother? I stll wonder if she had any savings and there is always a possibility she has a benefactor, it does happen and there may very well be those that are swallowing her story and feel badly for a young pregnant girl whose Mother was so brutally murdered by the evil, manipulative Tommy. As far as the gift part, she had to account fot him bringing the weapon with him.

I think some of these stories are exaggerated, perhaps limited to known drug kingpins. Schappelle Corby's family didn't have enough $$ to get her posh accommodations. There's also at least one story of a Frenchman who built a hot tub at great expense and then got booted from the cell by someone more connected or with more money.

TS likely only has what's left of the $10K his mother collected. HM - well, it remains to be seen how much money she'll have ready access to - and how quickly.

That said, look at the available pics of Lindsay Sandford or Schappelle Corby or Renae Lawrence. At best, no air-con, mattresses on the floor, shared toilets - HM is in for a real shock, no matter who comes to her aid.

(edited to add: I hadn't read Grace's post before I posted!)

Yay, finally!!! :skip:

Off to Kerobokan!

They pushed it all the way to their legal limits, didn't they?! I think the lawyers probably had something to do with that - perhaps a nice donation to the Bali police 'benevolent fund' - preferring the jail accommodation to the Kerobokan accommodation for their indulged clients.

Now maybe Tommy will get among some other prisoners who will advocate for him to save himself and blow Heather in.

I guess they may also go to court this week? I think they have to charge them to keep them in Kerobokan for any length of time.

I just read another long article about the two gentlemen facing the death penalty from the Bali Nine. It talks of how they have "girlfriends" in Indonesia who live near the prison and bring them food and likely other supplies. They can have visits 6 days a week apparently. The article was done by a reporter who visited them with Chan's family for an entire week. Chan's brother pretty much lived there for the first year of his incarceration. Very interesting. I also understand that Shapelle Corby had her sister move there to accommodate her needs.

So who will be supplying TS and HM? This situation sounds very similar to the situation with Joran Van Der Sloot in Peru. Between his lawyer and his girlfriend/now wife, he's always had his needs taken care of. No doubt his mother and brothers have been sending money. So who will the lawyers set up to visit TS and HM to bring them food and supplies? And who will supply them with the money to do so? I'd imagine TS's mother is taking care of his needs for now and will continue to figure out a way through his lawyer once he reaches Kerobokan. Is she also going to be helping out with HM? I suppose her needs are being met at the moment because of her pregnancy. Will that change after she has the baby?

Here's the link to the article if anyone is interested. It's very long and is interspersed with musings about the death penalty in general.

OMG :thud:

I can’t stand it …. sickening!

The couple chatted and laughed together.

…. says her baby is a healthy little girl who she will name Stella, after her grandmother.

“Stella was kicking last night,” she said of her baby. “She knows that she will meet her dad”

“I hope that she will grow up in Indonesia. I want to stay in Bali after this case. Because I love Bali. Bali is nice. The people are nice.”

This is just some little adventure to her! Some little hiccup where she will emerge unscathed and live happily ever after.

I guess she is already planning for when she gets off, and stays in Bali to visit Tommy every day and bring him food and other useful items.

Wonder how long it will take for her to change her mind, now that she'll be in steaming hot, sweaty Kerobokan with mosquitos and cramped conditions.

What's with the band on the (wedding) ring finger? When I enlarge it, it sort of looks like a rubber band in colour.
I know unmarried mothers are very frowned upon in Bali but ....... :waitasec:

(And what's with the cross on the necklace?)

And what is the book that is laying next to HM ... not a Bible is it? Hmmmmm .....

(Thinking of the foreigners that have 'converted' to Islam while in custody in Bali (Michelle Leslie, Scott Rush) - then 'unconverted' later, as Michelle Leslie did when she was released and returned home. Though Bali itself does have a high population of Christians too.)
