Lars Hafskjold moved to the San José de Uchupiamonas area in Bolivia in the beginning of the 1990s. His move is made because of his interest in the rainforest and wanting to help save it. He helps the local community with how to be able to use the forest for farming and also preserve the land. He learns of an indigenous tribe (Toromona) that lives deep in the Amazonian rainforest, by the border to Peru, and he becomes very interested in contacting the tribe. He does realise the danger it might mean, and it isn’t like he won’t take precautions before going to look for them. In a letter to his family in Norway he says: “And of course I'm ready to go in there one day. Even if they shoot at everything that moves. I just have to get a bulletproof (arrowproof) vest made for me first.”

In 1996, one year before Lars disappeared, his cousin visited him from Norway. Together they hiked for a couple of days in the rainforest, and it is reported that Lars knew his way around well.

In October 1997 his family in Norway receive the last letter from Lars as he is starting his treck from Cusco, Peru, where he writes: “Ps! If I'm gone longer than planned, it's only because I've met some "wild" Indians and will be staying there for a while.”, “This time I am more prepared and equipped. I don't think anything can go wrong this time.” and “It's safer here than in Oslo! I know the conditions very well. The forest is also fertile so there won't be any problems with food.”

Lars’ family don’t hear anything new from Lars. They start to worry as spring of 1998 arrives, and they gather money to travel to Bolivia to look for him. Lars is officially reported missing by Interpol and the Red Cross in April. The Norwegian author and journalist Henrik Hovland is the one who takes the mission to search for Lars. He visits villages Lars had been seen in shortly before his disappearance, but he does have a hard time getting info as not a lot of people want to talk about why they are in the areas. But it is evident that Lars did make it through areas of guerilla groups, drug trafficking and illegal golddiggers and lumberers.

No one knows what has happened to Lars and his disappearance will most likely forever remain a mystery. His mother passed away in November 2024, but in an interview with NRK she said that even if they don’t know where Lars is there is still hope that he is still alive. Lars’ siblings are now, 30 years after his disappearance, asking for Lars to be declared dead.
