ok......dumb it down for me......do we have lawyers who represent people who can't afford to pay for a lawyer and is TD one of these? I just don't remember reading that the tax payers were paying for TD. I may have missed it......

I should have added IMO.....I distinctly remember reading that at one time when he was first arrested even DM thought he might apply for legal aid.
I think it may be commonly accepted that MS is not able to personally fund his own defense ( no wealthy family etc) so I would expect that he could apply for legal aid...or possibly luck into defense counsel who was willing to work pro bono......But that is strictly my own opinion.

I should have added IMO.....I distinctly remember reading that at one time when he was first arrested even DM thought he might apply for legal aid.
I think it may be commonly accepted that MS is not able to personally fund his own defense ( no wealthy family etc) so I would expect that he could apply for legal aid...or possibly luck into defense counsel who was willing to work pro bono......But that is strictly my own opinion.

I wonder if you are able to discharge big legal debts through bankruptcy?

Agreed. DM and MS started out in the dock and were moved to a table with computers on Feb. 1st.

My sister is a lawyer that does the criminal side of Legal Aid. She generally does bails, pleas, or sometimes gets charges dismissed/stayed. No trials for her, she has a daily docket to clear. Her title is Duty Counsel.

If you're eligible (based on what your situation is and financial need is) you get a certificate saying so from Legal Aid Ontario (government organisation) , which you then take to a lawyer of your choosing that takes certificates and it will "pay" for a certain number of hours.

Why wouldn't each defendant be sitting at a separate table with only their counsel then? I don't think that is possible in Canada. Have we ever seen that in a case where the defendant is not out on bail? :waitasec:

I think most, if not all, defense attorneys do some legal aid work and they just come up in a rotation for appointed cases perhaps? This just happened to be TD's "turn" for an appointed legal aid case? And I don't think he would have wanted to turn it down considering the notoriety of the case.

We have seen instances in the past where a lawyer has taken a case knowing that it was going to be high profile...essentially...advertising his business. He may have agreed to work for whatever legal aid is offering just to have his name in the headlines. (assuming legal aid is involved.) MOO

Yes. They were in the prisoner box during jury selection but were moved to be with their lawyers on the first day of the trial.
