Bush signs bill to collect all newborns' DNA

  • #81
It doesn't bother me at all since I've decided that I'm not really as free as I thought I was anyway. I'm thinking thirty years down the road and can imagine many unidentified bodies being found and many more rapists and murderers caught. It will probably end up being required by the school system just like SS #'s and vaccinations. The only problem I'd worry about is another type of Holocaust someday against Jewish people.

SS# and vaccines are not mandatory by the school system.
They claim they are but they are not.
The only entity Legally entitled to request your SS# is the IRS. And vaccines??
you can get a Dr's override or site religious belief.

Why is even the Christian networks being quiet or are they? I'm sorry but I'm not very trusting of our government and I believe it wil eventually get worse. Call anything Health Care and it will be easier to get bills passed IMO.

Jack Van Impe has been talking on it quite a bit. My faith shows me it will get worse, this is just the beginning I believe.

I agree with you 100%.

If our government wants to clear some crimes then why aren't they taking the DNA of every prisoner??

Newborns?? That is their solution??

So, what can we the people do? Where do we start? Any ideas?

We're due in August and this is very disturbing to me. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for newborn screenings...it's the rest of it that is hard to stomach.

Very good question, that I want to know the answer too.

I really do not have an answer for that except give birth at home. Site that medical treatment is against your religion?

Anyone want to come do my c-section? LOL!

I think your OK since this is set to start in 6 months! August is only 3 months away... I doubt the means will be in place to do this that soon.

Did they think anyone would approve of this?

Considering that our children are tested NOW for just about anything (sometimes without your consent based on "doctor's recommendations"), why is this such a scary issue? It doesn't appear to me to be something that should or will stop those that want to or are able to have children from doing that in the future. Besides, once the kid is here there's really nothing they can do about it anyway. If you don't have any genetic conditions, it'll just sit and nothing be done with it.

I honestly think that this could be more of a help than a hinderance. I figure that it will be of benefit to some to have the genetic testing (nowhere in ANYTHING that I've read does it say anything about further testing or research on the samples after genetic testing) -- especially if they know there is a chance of something. This is all besides what crimes could have justice done as well (BTW, they have also passed bills in some states -- if not federally -- that make it regulation to take the DNA of people convicted of felonies).

Also, I find all this fear to be a bit far-fetched. Comparing the expansion of screenings ALREADY DONE in most states (if you have kids under 10 more than likely their DNA is already on paper somewhere) to eugenics and the Holocaust is really just a bit overboard, don't you think? To those talking of faith -- part of faith is looking to the future without fear. Being afraid of things that MIGHT happen will eventually ruin the life you have NOW.

I tried to read up on this law and it looks to me like it's mainly just some way to route a bunch of funding into a certain area. Some people can't even get healthcare and they want to check newborn dna before they even show any signs of an illness.

Also, I mentioned the Holocaust because of faith in what the book of Revelation says is going to happen someday.

Im not really scared of it, its just crazy to watch it going through. I know in my faith I will be taken care of through this.

Ok, just to clear up a few misconceptions going on here, let me explain some things since I'm pretty well versed on this topic and have been very aware and concerned about this bill for some time.

Newborn screenings are already "mandatory"* in most (if not all?) states at this time and have been for a few years. However, some states test for far more than others. *you can opt out, but they make it a very humiliating process by reminding you of how your child could die and it would be all your fault.

I am totally in agreement with the fact that these screens do save lives because most of the issues tested for are metabolic disorders that can be treated through diet alone, yet would absolutely be tragically deadly if undetected.
I did have both of my children screened and I am VERY selective about screens and we do not vaccinate (not up for discussion, a cousin of mine was seriously brain damaged by a vaccine and was compensated by the VCF for her injuries, no one in our family vaccinates after that incident).

That said, this bill deeply, deeply disturbs me. I do not for one second think that there are any reasons good enough for the US government to own a copy of my childs DNA. When my children are screened, I fully expect those results to be a private matter between me and my HCP and I expect the cards to be destroyed before ever leaving the lab. Technology is moving so fast these days that today it might be considered harmless by some, but tomorrow there may be even more nefarious uses for something like this. Today I may not be afraid of genetic discrimination or being unfairly vetted out of this society, but tomorrow, next year, next decade, someone who does disagree with me or hate me for that matter may be in power and have access to the very code that makes up my body.

Also, being a mother who HAS had a homebirth, I have to clear up the notion that having a homebirth will get you out of this. First of all, if your midwife is at all licensed, she will be required by law to collect the screen or risk losing her license and being fined. There may be a loophole through signing a decline waiver, but what they're doing is making it impossible to get this very important screen done for your child without the option of leaving the DNA storage/ownership portion out.

The only way to truly get out of this would be to homebirth unassisted or with an unlicensed midwife (good ones do exist, especially in the states where assisting homebirth is illegal). But, you're also giving up the chance to have your newborn tested. It puts parents who disagree with the DNA portion in a very difficult position.

Also, at some point it is my belief that they will eventually require you to be screened and store your card in order to apply for a SSN. If that becomes an issue, it's like having to give up a piece of your body to be a citizen.

I am very upset at how this managed to become law with such little fanfare. This should be a major debate. Parents in the circles I frequent did know about this and were outraged, but we didn't realize there would be as much mainstream outrage as there apparently is. I guess we just thought more people knew about it.

Probably the same type of thing that happens if you refuse to get your infant a social security number. What in the heck does a baby need a SS# for!?!?!

Cradle-to-grave National Health Care?

Hmmm.. I am in the minority.. I guess don't have a problem with this...

Imagine how many less unsolved cases their will be... How many less unidentified bodies there will be...

I see more pros than cons...
