Found Deceased CA - Alex Holden, 25, Sacramento, 31 Dec 2019

Ok, this is insane, people.

I read every single news story put out from when a body was discovered. Every story said it was near Hwy 160 overpass and the Bike Trail. (Stories linked above.) A reporter went there in person and took pictures of the area lit up while the police were there. (Twitter news story linked above.)

Now, early today, the person (that's never been identified) that supposedly was in charge of the search announced that he fell off the bridge and was found in/next to the river.

Today, every local news story has been updated to now say that he was found in the river. Two miles from the police/coroner activity yesterday. (I did see one that said "along the river"--but still, 2 miles is hardly along the river.)

No. Just no. There were people that were involved in the original search of the bike trail talking about the exact area he was found.

I even posted earlier about not going on that search because of the terrain in that area and my bad knee.

And suddenly--it didn't happen?

Why? Why would they change the location and cause of death that fast? So that "accidental drowning" would be more sympathetic than people wondering accident/suicide?

That is weird. I wonder if the early reports were confused about which of the two bodies was where?

The media reports are getting confusing in this case. In this report police responded to reports by someone that a body had been found near the bike trail. No mention of being found in the river.

Police responded to the area near the bike trail and Highway 160 about 3 p.m. Sunday following reports that a body had been found, according to Chan.

In this report it's stated that police found Alex in the river.

The Sacramento Police Department said they found the body in the river near Highway 160 and the American River Bike Trail around 3 p.m. Sunday.
Did police find Alex in the river or did they find him somewhere near the bike trail after being alerted by someone?

No. Every news story reported a male found. The woman--possibly homeless--wasn't found until much later after the stories had been released.

I'm going to assume they found them where all the police lights were lighting up the area very near Hwy 160 and the Bike Trail while they recovered the body.

But if enough media outlets pick up the new and improved story, then that will be the new facts, whether they're right or not.

Here is the picture again of the area. He was found (yesterday) near the middle top where the two bike trails converge and go under Hwy. 160.

As of today, he was found all the way at the bottom, where it says Pipe's Bridge, after having accidentally fallen over a 3 foot tall chain link fence.

They may have only mentioned them because they had his name on them so they served as evidence of his identity.

I don’t quite understand the criticism. If they said he was found near 160 and the bike trail it looks like that’s the closest major point of reference?

The coroners report will say whether he drowned and whether it was an accident. <modsnip: removed reference to reddit>

BBM, I haven't read this anywhere. Is this from the missing page (website) or FB group or where exactly? MOO

Sacramento Police on Twitter
Update, today the Sac County Coroner has identified the body located yesterday at 3:00PM in the American River as missing person Alex Holden. This is never the outcome we want from any missing person case, our hope is that this may provide some closure for the family

in this news report video alex's father says he was found on the bank edge by the bridge. the news report says it is believed he was found because the water level had dropped recently.

Officials ID body found in American River as missing Sacramento man Alex Holden
Thank you, dunlop. From the video transcript:

[...]

Reporter: Sacramento Police say searchers who were out looking for Alex found a man's body around 3:00 p.m. on Sunday near the American River Bike Trail. It was off in some brush. By phone from his home in Missouri Holden's father said detectives told the family that Alex's phone, passport and debit card were found on the body.

Mr. Holden: He was in the water on the bank edge by the bridge.

Reporter: It is believed that Alex Holden's body was found because the river is down, but there are still questions about how he got here and ultimately what happened to cause his death.

(Sorry for the all-caps!)

Well this seems to pretty much settle it then, he was in the water.

I do think there’s a reasonable chance that we won’t know for sure what happened (accident or suicide).

I still think this seems like more of an accident than anything though.

@Joseph.dale thoughts?

Yes, and I can't begin to tell you the number of cases I've seen lately that involved alcohol and water, with a noticeable increase around New Year's. I started a list around that time and couldn't keep up with them! MOO

Sacramento police then responded to the scene and observed no signs of foul play, according to Chan. While official identification and the cause of death must come from the county coroner, Chan said police believe the body was Alex Holden.

Not sure how police can respond to the scene of a three week dead body and say there's no sign of foul play. o_Oo_O

It was said that the body was "off in some brush".

I take that to mean that his body was caught in the brush that was underwater until recently and lower water levels is what allowed for Alex being found. JMO

The river level has not changed much since 1/1/20. Only a few inches up or a few inches down.

It just means that there’s “no obvious signs of foul play.”

No observable injuries, weapons, etc.

Ahhh the water+men+alcohol in fact does strike again. I am somehow comforted knowing it looks to be what we thought.

Since Alex was found downstream from the H street readings you linked, I wonder if tidal influence would be a factor.

At the I Street bridge on the Sacramento river just below the confluence with the American River the tides can make a difference in measurement in feet during a day. JMO
