Rainbow Gathering - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Has anybody heard of Rainbow Gatherings before?
Last night I was talking to my bil who was a wandering homeless man for many years. He has a mental illness that, due to advances in medications and his willingness to take them, has been under control for almost two decades now.
When he considered himself homeless, he told me he never stayed in one place for very long but had two friends who he'd meet up with from time-to-time. I'm uncertain how they communicated or if they'd just run into each other randomly.
Anyway, out of the blue, he mentioned that sometimes he got invited to something called a Rainbow Gathering.
I asked, what's that? He said a bunch of people out in the wilderness/woods who gather together. He added the food wasn't good especially the rotten potatoes. lol! I tried to get more info out of him because the purpose of these gatherings wasn't clear to me. He didn't really know either but said he was uncomfortable there and left almost as soon as he arrived. There's no point of trying to make sense sometimes, just take what's being said as someone recalling an experience.
He made an interesting comment that, when his illness began to manifest itself (no one knew what to think or what to do imo), he felt they pushed him away (they were scared/in denial?). He said what bugged him the most was, "everyone was trying to tell me how to live". Therefore, he wanted to leave the familiar place that was no longer the same.
Since he'd been in the military for about two years (before being medically discharged when illness emerged), he'd been through basic and survival training. He credits that training for being comfortable living/sleeping in nature if he had too. He likes to remind peeps that mental illness doesn't equal stupid (I agree).
Anyway, after mulling this conversation over today, I decided to post some of it after I googled 'Rainbow Gathering'. I was surprised when a bunch of info came up today (as bil's experiences took place a long time ago), along with info about scheduled dates in various cities. Montana and Northern California came up on the first page.
Just thought I'd throw the story out here as sometimes God works in mysterious ways.
