Hiker disappears in Northern California mountains on 5-day hike

“Daniel Komins had embarked on a solo hiking trip in the Trinity Alps, about 75 miles northwest of Redding, on Aug. 10. He has not been seen since one day later when backpackers told the Trinity County Sheriff's Office they had seen him on the trail.”

“Authorities suspended search-and-rescue operations for a missing hiker in the mountains of Northern California on Friday night, but said they planned to return to the area on Saturday.”

“Search-and-rescue teams are combing a rugged piece of Northern California wilderness, hoping to find a hiker reported missing Wednesday.

Blue Lake resident Daniel Komins, 34, is an experienced backpacker and an emergency medical technician, said officials with the Trinity County Sheriff’s Department. When he failed to return home Wednesday evening from a solo, five-day backpacking trip in the Trinity Alps, his girlfriend called police.”

Sorry for the off-topic, but this was a pretty amazing survival story. Mt. Shasta hiker survives 20 foot fall into crevasse, describes experience

The story was updated at 9:07 this morning, so I guess the infrared helicopter search last night was unsuccessful. Hoping for good news today!!

This is such a beautiful area but so much forest. Praying he’s just injured and he’s been able to treat himself and is currently holed up awaiting rescue.

Wow did she (both of them) get lucky! I know glissading can be a lot of fun but I would never do it in an area I wasn’t sure of. Glad they both made it off the mountain.

MISSING HIKER | AUG. 18 UPDATE: My SAR sources from Humboldt had a personal briefing around 8 a.m. Sunday as they continue to search for Dan Komins. Here is the latest from them:

Due to teams being deployed yesterday and staying overnight, attendance at this morning's briefing was minimal.

• 12 teams deployed yesterday, very difficult terrain.
• 2 minor injuries and a dog injury.
• A team is being deployed and inserted in a new high probability area and will work from that down.
• A cadaver dog is being deployed for a high probability area/hazard black hole, approximately 2-2.5 up the trailhead.
• Teams that were deployed yesterday will get picked up and brought back to command around 2 p.m., there will be NO overnight teams.
• Will deploy new teams tomorrow.
• Helicopter resources: one National Guard, one CHP (already off the ground and searching)
• Some of Dan’s friends have returned from their 2 day search with evidence of footprints that match Dans shoes, teams will be focusing on that area, as well as continued search in all other places with high probability of where he may be.
• EMS/Fire friends will also be returning to command, we are waiting for them as they are currently hiking out to brief some more, make new plans, restock and for them to redeploy.
• Received 3 GPS donations for people who are wanting to go out and help, and several donations received at Blue Lake Fire that will be brought over and deployed.

"Dan’s mom, Susan, came to command post yesterday and we are all staying positive. There are a lot of people brainstorming and making plans," they said.

Daniel Komins: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know | Heavy.com

In the Trinity Alps of Northern California, a firefighter and first responder who has long experience in those hills, set off for what was to be a few days hike. Now, with his car found empty and in the same spot he parked it on Aug. 10 and no word for more than a week, despite having a GPS tracker with him, and a cell phone. The last anyone heard a word was on Aug. 11.

*What might cause his GPS tracker to be nonfunctional? Cell phone I get, with service probably lacking, but a tracker is something I hear all the time as being recommended to take on hikes such as this. Does a tracker run on batteries? If he fell into a crevasse, would it cease to transmit?

Seems he did the right things to pursue this hike and yet he is missing. Still hopeful since he is prepared and skilled at hiking as well as emergencies.

Sad. It was one of the possible outcomes of course, but I was still hopeful..as of about 20 minutes ago. Thanks @Knox for finding this info.

I remember that journalist reporting when the 2 little girls wandered away a few months ago in Humboldt County. She seems to be on top of things around that area.
