-family says has long history of mental health issues but refuses treatment
-engineering student
-told family going hiking at Lake Arrowhead on Mar 27/2022, seen on parent's home security camera leaving their home that day, has not been heard from since
-California Hwy Patrol located his abandoned vehicle that shows may have hit a guardrail/has some minor damage
-in area he was to be hiking they found his runners and pair of flip-flops
-calls to his cell go straight to voicemail
-is an experienced hiker
-family say not like him at all to just leave and not contact family
-vehicle impounded by local tow yard but family unable to access vehicle as they're not the registered owner

Kwan's family members said that it's unlike him to just leave and let anyone know. Kwan's family said that its never happened before.

Making matters worse for Kwan's family, authorities aren't willing to treat this as a missing person's case.

"If they don't go in there and try to look for my son, my son gonna die in there," Benny Kwan, Derrick's father, said. No one is helping Kwan's family and friends look for him outside of them.

According to David Chiang, a friend of Kwan's, he is an experienced hiker. He is possibly wearing a hooded sweatshirt and has two bags in his possession.

"Physically in shape, he's a strong guy, he loves MMA and also hiking he conquered all the 6 peaks when we were teens so if anyone's gonna survive it's him," Chiang said.

But Derrick's family said that he's battled mental health struggles for years and refused to seek help from professionals.

Similar info as above:

The officer said he recognized the car as one of two he had seen positioned on a turnout about 40 minutes earlier as two people changed a tire off the highway near Crestline. The pair declined assistance, the CHP officer said.

Witnesses said a person matching Kwan’s description who was in the car ran off, carrying two large bags. Officer Jacob Griede, a CHP spokesperson, said the person ran toward Highway 18 and in the direction of the woods.

“Then someone told the CHP they saw an Asian man walking down Highway 18 carrying two bags,” Benny Kwan said Tuesday. “None of this makes sense. The pieces don’t fit and it all stinks.”

So the officer pulled up on two cars - did the officer run the plates on the other car? What was the conversation between Derrick and that person (did he seem OK)? What was in the two bags Derrick had, and when did he get them? Because he didn't carry those out on the camera view posted where he walked out of the house only carrying a water bottle, so they had to be already in the car, or he picked them up somewhere after. Do you think he stopped and shopped for something along the way?

Kudos to the family for providing this information. It doesn't make Derrick's life any less valuable, or make him not deserve to be searched for. But it could explain erratic behavior on his part. In fact, I think if he has MH issues, it's more possible that he could be alive but hiding or going off-grid. This makes searching for him that much more important, so he can receive care for his physical and mental health.

Diamond Bar man’s disappearance takes searchers to San Bernardino Mountains – Daily Bulletin
April 7, 2022
SBM

Benny Kwan returned to the San Bernardino Mountains on Thursday, April 7, hoping that his 27-year-old son, Derrick, would reappear as suddenly as he vanished almost two weeks ago. [snip] Kwan had been reported missing to the LA County Sheriff’s Department on March 28. Deputies at San Bernardino County’s Twin Peaks station received the report on March 31 and began a search. Members of the Rim of the World Search and Rescue Team scoured the area on April 3, a search that was suspended because of weather. It resumed on April 5.

Wonder if he is related to skater Michelle Kwan. She works for the state dept now and could put some of her contacts into helping.
