I believe the age range of victims he has been charged with molesting range in age from 9 through 13. He molested some out of statute victims who were as old as 14.

I haven't heard of him inserting anything into a boy's penis, though I do know of instances where he has inserted something into their anus.

Ayres is a child psychiatrist, not a pediatrician. Pediatricians sent children to him who had already been thorughly examined.

The place in Boston where he trained in child psychiatry in Boston did not permit child psychiatrists to touch children in any shape or form in therapy. If they did, they were fired.

As one former Boston colleague said to the Ayres blog, "the only child psychiatrists who examine the genitalia of boys are pedophile psychiatrists."

Case closed.

Mercyneal--Are you speaking of his proctology exams (which IIRC) were done without gloves? Can you point me in the direction of some info on this report. I have a very real concern about a vivid memory my son has. I spent some time on the phone today with San Mateo County DHS but didn't get far.

My husband's going tomorrow to get our box file out of storage so I can go over some things. The frightening thing is that during our trial, the defense tried to paint this son as an attention seeker who reported abuse not only in our home (by the neighbor) but who had reported sexual abuse twice while in San Mateo County (both reports were coded as unfounded). The defense even paid for the two prior foster parents to fly in and testify that our son lied. The judge didn't buy it.

Yes, Ayres - a child psychiatrist- did his own special form of "proctology" exams. Do you know of any pediatrician who does this on a young kid as a routine part of an annual checkup? I never got one. I don't know of any other perfectly healthy kids who got one, either from their pediatrician. And certainly not from a child psychiatrist.

One of the in-statute victims who was to testify at the trial received the proctology exam. However, the day before the trial was to begin, he dropped out because he was too traumatized to testify.

We know of at least three boys Ayres did this to.

I wouldn't take San Mateo County's word when they say your son's case was unfounded.

That's what they said about the Ayres victim who came forward in 1987, too. Ayres told them he had been trained to do physicals in Boston, and the police believed him.

That's what it says on the police report for that victim: "Unfounded."

There are at least seven known instances over the years in which Ayres victims went to agencies like Children's Services; the San Mateo Police and the California Medical Board, and nothing was done about it.

A therapist tried to complain about Ayres to Children's Services in 1995 and she was told that there was nothing they could do, because Ayres "was a doctor."

I hope that you can get to the truth about what happened to your son. It's important.

Well it just gets better and better with Ayres doesnt it. For those of you who have held these images and experiences inside their minds and hearts all of these years, I think you are amazing to have made it this far!!!!!! Hats off to you.

According to one victim ( who died over four years ago) Ayres pulled down his pants and said in an extremely disappointed voice, "Oh, you've got a full head of pubic hair."

Ayres molested the boy anyway.

no punishment is good enough for this guy

No, Mercyneal, I have never known a pediatrician to do any sort of penetration of the anus. In the birthing room, the anus is certainly given a close looking over and it is checked frequently at all infant check-ups. In my experience, a doctor has to be alerted by a "helpful" parent to even check the genital area (such as in when a child has described an irritation, etc.). The one exception I'd have to make here is that one of my sons had an undescended testicle until well into his teens. He and his doctor and his Dad got pretty comfortable about the yearly check to see if it had dropped. Thank goodness it did. I hear, through the grapevine, that all is working out well.

One thing that I keep coming back to with Ayres is cost. In my experience, a visit to a psychiatrist is seen as a very costly exam. It is often ordered by DHS, a school, or because of concern of the onset of a mental illness. We've always had to wait for the approval to go through, including a referral from the pediatrician. That in itself, shows that a child is well covered in the physical exam department. The same goes for kids under DHS care. They are mandated to be seen by a doctor within a certain number of days of coming into care.

So, you've got your long awaited appt. with the psych and a lot of ground to cover. Ayres wasted the half hour or hour appt. talking about jock itch and acne? That's like going to your BMW repairman and paying him $500/hour to show you how to wash your windshield, isn't it? I'm just beyond shocked that the other therapists, foster parents, caseworkers weren't whispering more about these practices. Has there ever been any concern raised by some of the "career foster parents". There were a lot of them in San Mateo as they actually paid a reasonable amount of F/C and adoption assistance. There were some great ones and some abusive ones, IME.

In my experience, an hour is just barely enough time to squeeze in history, current behaviors, discussion about mood and possible meds. Just as I've wondered if Bradley ever actually vaccinated those babies, I wonder if Ayres ever did any actual psychiatry.

And to be clear, I haven't heard anything from San Mateo. I left two messages. Is there a central location for information on possible victims in San Mateo? Does the county maintain those records and dates? I'm still waiting on my file box. It's actually in very nice order as it had to be presented as a whole to our children's rapist's attorneys.

And another question, does Ayres have a preference concerning race of the boy? My son is black and very dark skinned. He was a skinny, sick little 7 year old when he came to us but inexplicably blossomed into a magnificent adult man. He's a recovering meth addict (clean almost 3 years), a heavy smoker, and a chronically ill diabetic so it doesn't make sense. But it gives me great joy. He can't drive due to being almost blind but I see him walk by my window several times each day and every time, I think "Wow, that guy's good looking!! Wait, that's my son." Then he waves and I blow him a kiss.

Ayres didn't talk to boys about jock itch and acne. He's just making that up. Mostly all he talked about was masturbation, and describing graphic sex acts. He wasn't interested in listening to the boys talk about their problems, fears, hopes, frustrations. He didn't listen. He was just interested in getting into their pants.

I have never heard of Ayres molesting an African American boy. Not sure how many were sent to him. I do know he liked Jewish boys. He molested a number of Jewish boys who were the sons of doctors. there are also victims who are Hispanic. Also, victims who are WASPS.

Not sure which number you are calling. IF your son says he was a victim, then you need to call the San Mateo police Department - Detective Rick Decker. Or you should call the prosecutor. They are NOT going to give you any details on what was done to the other boys.

But before you call the police or DA, you need to talk about Ayres with your son. But it's not clear to me you've had a clear discussion about Ayres with your son. Before you call them you need to get the FACTS from him. They're not going to talk to you or give you information unless you have information to give to them about your son being a victim.

Just from the amount of time I have spent in the last few weeks familiarizing myself with Ayres case in detail, he definitely got his rocks off by molesting children of other physicians.

I wonder if that was his way of walking on the edge-I mean the child of another physician...was he pushing the envelope?

I wonder if the children at the Judge Baker Guidance center were also the sons of physicians???

o/t I spoke with my mother and briefly outlined this story. One of her friends in jr high and high school went to Judge Baker. Male.

He committed suicide a few years after they all graduated from high school. Now she is wondering and so am I..... HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

How old would your mother's friend have been? Ayres practiced at Judge Baker from 1959-1963. He also worked at the Reception Center for Boys, a halfway house for boys getting out of juvenile hall.

Thanks Mercy-he would be a little old for Ayres preference, but would fit in in terms of time frame...it did make me realize however that I likely have other relatives who know kids who went there...I already sent out an email....

Freelance Journalist Victoria Balfour, and Mitchell Garabedian the Boston lawyer who has represented more than 700 victims of sexual abuse in the catholic church, were on "The Emily Rooney Show" on WGBH Radio in Boston today talking about william ayres:

Links etc:

http://williamayreswatch.blogspot.com/2010/03/victoria-balfour-and-mitchell.html

Pretty darned good interview. Even the interviewer was on spot.

An interesting point: Garabedian talks about the fact that "confidential settlements" CAN NOT prevent you from going to the police with criminal charges. (right at the end of the interview.)

Serendipity-Emily Rooney's show happens to be my mother's FAVORITE!!!!! Off to check out the link....

I love love love how Mitch made it clear that a confidentiality agreement is null and void if it indicates that you cannot speak to the police or another physician about your abuse-exactly what you pointed out On.

What devestates me is Balfours statement regarding how the doctors in town knew or suspected Ayres so that they stopped referring patients to him....and yet NONE of them turned him in, although some confronted him.

Mercyneal--My son and I have a visit scheduled for this weekend. I will let him lead as he's the adult. I was merely calling to check and see if SM County kept records of the physicians my children (we have 3 boys from that county) saw while in their care. I did not mention Ayres name.

An interesting aside. Remember Art Silverman (now safely tucked in at the Men's Correctional Facility in Salem)? Art is Jewish and ran to Israel and lived for 9 years. He and his wife have an adopted son who has some form of spectrum disorder. He would be in his mid 20's. The two counts which Silverman pleaded to involved the son's friends. Although, we know that Silverman molested many clients.

I know he used to go with his Dad down to the Bay area. Presumably this would have been for Art to see Dr. Beebe. I wonder if Ayres ever saw Silverman's son? I've always worried tremendously about that young man. He was also a good friend of our kids' rapist and I saw him as quite vulnerable.

The civil lawyers in California have not checked Children's Hospital in Boston, where Ayres was employed- to see if there were any complaints or civil suits against him.

However, when Dr. Mel Levine- who also worked at Children's Hospital- was sued for molestation - they found complaints and lawsuits against him going back 20 years. When Levine was first accused of molestation, Children's Hospital first denied that there were any complaints against him. They spoke too soon.

From the New York Times story on August 5, 2008 on Levine:http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/06/us/06pediatrician.html

There have been, however, other complaints dating back 20 years. In 1985, a few months after he left Boston, court records show that a letter of complaint was sent to the president of Children’s Hospital. That complaint turned into a civil lawsuit filed in 1988 in Federal District Court in Massachusetts. There was also a formal complaint to the Massachusetts medical board in 1993. And Dr. William Coleman, a longtime medical colleague, said Dr. Levine told him in 2002 that another former patient was claiming sexual abuse.

None of the cases were proved in court. The lawsuit was dismissed in 1991 for lack of evidence. The Massachusetts medical board did not find enough evidence to act on the 1993 complaint. The patient who made the complaint to Dr. Levine in 2002 is now a plaintiff represented by Mr. Durso.

My question is: why hasn't anyone in California bothered to find out if Ayres has ever been sued by a victim in Boston? My hat's off to Boston lawyer Mitch Garabedian for raising this point about the possibility that Boston victims of Ayres have settled suits.

It would seem to me that an enterprising civil lawyer or reporter could find out if, say, there was a letter of complaint about Ayres to the president of Children's Hospital.

It's well past time for someone to look into this. Who's gonna do it?
