The suicide of De Ranieri has nothing to do with the Ayres case. I don't know why that it's published that he died of a heart attack. The mother of one of the Ayres victims was De Ranieri's patient and she would be in a position to know what happened to him. I am just passing along the news that we have heard.

At both the hearings for the Ayres case, and during the actual trial, both "Dr." Ayres and his wife Solveig behaved in weird and inappropriate ways.

During one hearing, Solveig walked up to the mother of a victim and said "Only God knows what really happened." The mother told the detective on the case, who told the judge. Solveig was advised not to talk to the families of the victims

During the trial, Ayres would wave to the anguished parents of the victims. He apparently is still angry that he had to fork out money to the family of one of the victims, because in the hall outside the courtroom he walked up to the mother of the victim who settled the civil case and said "Isn't it a lovely day?" And she said "Not after what you did to my son!",

Ayres replied, "Oh? It isn't a lovely day?"

He also walked up to one of the victims who was going to testify and said coyly "You should be a basketball player."

This monster does not understand boundaries.

During the trial, when he spotted one child psychiatrist who was there in support of the victims, Ayres sneered to the doctor "Are you a Scientologist?"

There's a great story in the San Francisco Chronicle about how controlling and vindictive Ayres is.

Here's the link to "Retired Child Psychiatrist Facing Molest Charges Was Never Far From Controversy"
http://articles.sfgate.com/2007-08-...t-psychiatry-felony-child-molestation-charges

Incidentally, that term "retired" is incorrect. Ayres was in the process of trying to work for some place for troubled boys when he was arrested. California Atorney General Jerry Brown immediately suspended his medical license. Otherwise Ayres would still be practicing to this day.

After forty years of having an endless pipeline to boys, I believe that while out on bail he is still finding ways to be around boys.

Perhaps he's hanging around a public swimming pool where little boys are taking lessons... After all, the police did find those nude boy picture books of adolescent boys in Ayres' possesion.

Meanwhile the Ayres case is mentioned in a story about pedophile pediatrician Dr. Earl Bradley in Delaware.
http://www.delawareonline.com/article/20100224/NEWS01/2240356/Bradley-sex-case-ignites-outrage

See second page.

Here's the excerpt:

Seth L. Goldstein, a lawyer and former police officer who heads the nonprofit Child Abuse Forensic Institute in California, said it's not unheard of for pedophiles to have so many victims. He said one study in 1982 found that the average pedophile has nearly 70 victims, but could not recall any specific cases with so many.

Goldstein cited the ongoing prosecution of California psychiatrist William Ayres, but that doctor was charged with abusing six boys.

The story doesn't mention that at least 50 Ayres victims in California have come forward as well as in the in statute victims There are also a number of victims who have not come forward and most likely never will

Mercyneal--I don't think I agree about Ayres not having social boundaries (well, that's not quite right as he certainly doesn't....) concerning the way he speaks to victims and their families. I think it's all about calculated intimidation. He's a bright man and he knows how to play the "power card".

I was a very strong woman and yet my knees literally knocked when I had to walk through the gauntlet of my children's rapist's supporters everyday. My husband would hold my arm and whispered encouragement but it was still brutal. They physically frightened me with their body language and vibes. They wouldn't budge but taunted us to say "excuse me" or brush past them. They would also crowd up against us on the benches. It was absolutely sickening to have to sit mere inches away from these people. When my children testified, and looked up at me or their Dad, they would also have to look right at one of their rapist's adult friends. The family's priest sat directly behind me so they ended up looking into his eyes too. It was like that all nine days of the trial.

I have a delightful adult daughter (not one of the victims) who is like a pit bull in a tiny gorgeous Asian body. When we went to a Post Conviction Relief Trial hearing, 9 years past the original trial, I was already quite disabled. My husband was out of town doing Katrina relief work in MS so my daughter drove me to court. I walked very slowly with a cane at the time.

We came up the stairs of the courthouse and there they all were again (talk about PTSD)--clogging up the hallway and praying. My daughter just announced in the loudest most authoritative voice, "Clear a path! And if anybody knocks my Mom over, they'll be dealing with me." I was stuck somewhere between total mortification and peeing my pants with laughter. It was just the levity I needed. I gracefully (well...) waltzed through the center of the gauntlet and into the courtroom as all these huge guys glowered at my petite girl. She glowered back. I've never been so proud.

Intimidation works. We know it does. Victims and their families are on shaky ground and extremely traumatized by the court process, the actual sight of their abuser, the opening of old wounds, the presence of media, the whispering, the smurks.

Oh, it's hard.

Two things-I have been pondering the Administrative Medical License being considered in NC. I think it is a loophole being tailored for Mel Levine, TBH. It would allow him to consult and lecture as an active physician with a license. BUT he would not be (allowed) to have patients per say who were treated by him in his own practice.

The other issue is the one I have been thinking about regarding transparency for medical personnel who lose their license to practice because of abuse. I came upon this thread which gave me a germ of understanding regarding what happens with these folks....
[ame="http://www.websleuths.com/forums/showthread.php?t=96607"]Scott Fredin, registered sex offender, can be a chiropractor (MN) - Websleuths Crime Sleuthing Community[/ame]

Most states have laws in effect that indicate if the person can show they were "rehabilitated", they can apply for their license again and probably be reinstated.

That was beautifully written, Missizzy. Thank you.

I totally agree that Ayres did it to intimidate the victims and parents- but word is that he also has horrible socially inappropriate boundaries. I think it's the combination of the two.

After the first trial, there was a hearing in the fall to determine the date of the second trial. A juror who had voted to convict in the first trial attended the hearing. Afterwards Ayres tried to intimidate her and put her off guard waving and saying good morning to her outside the courthouse. So she walked over to him and told him that he was a pedophile. She said Ayres' face just "crumbled and melted." He kept saying "I'm a psychiatrist. " She kept saying "No you're not. You're a pedophile." Ayres the bully then became Ayres the little baby, who couldn't handle his own fights. He motioned for a court officer who was outside to help him. But the officer didn't come over.

Believe09: concerning Levine. You said:
It would allow him to consult and lecture as an active physician with a license

The Board specicifically says that he will have an inactive license for the rest of his life ( I would imagine if there were a new criminal case against him, they would revoke it entirely).

Also if you go to his new website www.bringingupminds.com, you will see a disclaimer that his organization does not dispense medical advice. Specifically it says in small print at the bottom of the site:

Bringing Up Minds does not provide medical advice, diagnosis or treatment

I bet the Board told him he had to do that.

But my complaint is that he has not informed the school boards and other organizations about the status of his license, and the reasons for it.When we called the places that had hired him to talk, their jaws dropped to the floor when told about the sex abuse scandal. He's trying to keep it quiet so he can make money. As the booking agency dropped him like a hot potato when they found out, my guess is that no one will hire him to speak if they find out.

The way I read the PDF of the event is that Mel agrees that should he ever request to have his license reinstated, he understand that the board would likely turn him down. The word likely stood out to me.

In March 2010, the NC Medical Boards is holding hearings on a new kind of Physician's license-one that is an Administrative License. The website states examples of when it could be beneficial.

What is there to stop Mel Levine from requesting one....given that it would not be used (allegedly) in the treatment of patients?

Of course Mel has to state that his organization does not dispense Medical Advice. Have you ever read the same disclaimer on any contracts etc...from the Dr Phil Show?

The disclaimer should raise red flags with any organization asking him to speak. The disclaimer should cause someone to google search Mel Levine. We know that it wont...because people do not catch that kind of stuff.

Let's not forget about the recent revelation that Dr. David Livingston of Tennessee is also allowed to practice despite being a known violent sex offender. We have a thread on this man:

[ame="http://www.websleuths.com/forums/showthread.php?t=94645"]Tennessee Gives Medical License To Sex Offender Doctor - Websleuths Crime Sleuthing Community[/ame]

I commented on this thread that I think it's a bunch of bean juice that the state didn't have to complete background checks on physicians in 1992. I'd really like to see that statute. In reading back over that thread, I see that I wrote to the reporter who described Livingston's crime as having "a six-year sexual relationship with his 15-year-old stepdaughter". I never did hear back from her. Hmmm.

I wonder how busy Dr. Livingston's practice has been? The frightening thing is that once someone's story fades from the front page, facts are forgotten, and pedophiles leap into action.

Mercyneal--Just an "out-there" kind of question. You've mentioned the odd behavior of Ayres and his lack of social boundaries. Some of his comments and interactions seem quite strange.

Is there any chance that the man is somewhere on the autism spectrum? I've recently been paying more and more attention to physicians who are. Because of my illness, I've had the opportunity to be seen at large teaching hospitals in Portland and at the Mayo Clinic. I was floored by the number of doctors who were "spectrumy-y". Bright as could be but with no social graces, no bedside manner, very flat and cold and detached, seemingly forced and inappropriate attempts at any emotional response.

Even my local neuro is somewhere on the spectrum, as was confirmed by another physician. I also know a pharmacist who is. Comments have popped up time and time again about Dr. Bradley. Just wondering.

No, I wouldn't describe Ayres as anywhere near being autistic. His former psychiatrist colleagues recall him as a back-slapping "buddy-buddy" type at annual meetings. He knew who to suck up to. Others have said that he was not nice to underlings like secretaries - the little people who couldn't provide access to boys. He also buddied up to all the judges in San Mateo County. He kissed their butts.

He can also act like a goofy teenager. On the stand, when asked why he wanted to look at a victim's nipples, he said it was to see if they were enlarged. He reminisced "It's not like the old days when I was a teenager and boys ran around in the locker room buck naked snapping towels at each other."

Given that the police had found books of nude boys undressing in locker rooms in his storage space, let's just say it wasn't an appropriate thing to say.

To me it appears that he's kept a front up for so long and his id doesn't like it. His id has been unleashed and is out of control. He's one complex dude, but he's not autistic.

But to me underneath the goofiness his voice sounds really depressed. I have heard a speech he gave on tapemabout ten years before he was arrested. He just sounds depressed.

I have a question. I noticed this statement in article about Ayres:

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2007/04/23/MNGEQPDM0N1.DTL

"Police considered the case reported by the man in 2002 a solid one, but their investigation ended abruptly when the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a state law in June 2003 that had retroactively extended the statute of limitations for filing child-molestation charges. The alleged victim then sued Ayres in December 2003; the psychiatrist agreed to a confidential settlement about a year and a half later."

We recently had a thread concerning a Judge William Bradley of Delaware (the reporters say there's no relationship to either the doctor or his uncle, also named William).

http://www.prlog.org/10239757-delaware-judge-accused-of-child-molestation.html

"For just the second time in the history of this nation, a sitting Judge has been accused of child molestation."

http://www.delawareonline.com/artic...-judge-Bradley-admits-abusing-11-year-old-boy

on the second page of the article:

"Both Kelly’s federal civil lawsuit and Doe’s state civil lawsuit were brought under Delaware’s Child Victims Act, which suspended the statute of limitations on such lawsuits for two years."

Can someone explain why the Delaware law allowed a window of disclosures to be made and suits (I'm assuming criminal and civil) to be filed but that wasn't possible in the state of California?

  • #92
The US Supreme Court's decision, Stogner V California struck down a retroactive law that the California legislature had pretty recently enacted, giving all victims a one year window to file a civil suit, no matter how far back the abuse was.

Anyway, the Supreme Court ruling specifically cut down the California law - not the law in Delaware or any other state. The suit was brought by Marion Stogner, a male pedophile in California. I don't believe anyone has brought this Delaware law to the attention of the US Supreme Court

Perhaps that's the reason. But perhaps someone else out there can help us.

If a window of opportunity is opened by a state, would trials which occur during that time hold up on appeal? I thought the "open window" approach was fabulous when I read about it in Delaware. I wondered why other states hadn't tried it. I guess we didn't bargain on pedophiles putting up a fight. My, they are a wily lot, aren't they?

It's really a cruel trick of nature that so many are fabulously bright. Wouldn't it be great if the feds could house all the very best....Bradley, Ayres, et al.....in one place and pick their brains to establish better protections....and keep them locked up forever?

For those who are interested in reading the details of the first Ayres criminal trial in the summer of 2009, I recommend going to www.williamayreswatch.blogspot.com. Scroll back to older posts.

It's all very good reading. The blog is run by a victim of Ayres who started it in 2008 when he saw Ayres' wife Solveig making remarks about the case on an arts blog.

It's got a solid readership and has been written about in the San Mateo County Times.

Also the Boston Police Crimes Against Children Unit posted their first "Looking for Boston Victims of Ayres" post on this blog, back in the fall of 2009.

It's all excellent info and very well written

Also, the Ayres story is the most widely read news story ever at the Male Survivor website.

For those of you who have an extended interest in the issue of the Ayre's case and/or the issue of Male Survivors of Sexual Abuse, you will find Victoria Balfour featured at this conference being held in NYC on March 20, 2010.
http://www.malesurvivor.org/conferen...0/program.html

Thank you, Victoria, for championing these victims!

For those of you trying to track down connections between people - go to the website www.veromi.com and type in the name of the person and the town.
You will get a listing of everyone who has that name, cities with which that name has been associated AND in the right column there will be a list of the names of others who they "may be associated with".

Also, try typing in each of those names in that right hand column and see what comes up, both in the original town and in every town listed.

This is site is totally free, none of that "enter a credit card number" stuff at all.

Good luck!

Here's a pediatrician who makes Mel Levine look like Snow White.

Nobel Prize winning pediatrician Dr. Daniel Gajdusek brought home 56 boys from Micronesia. He said he adopted them, but he did not. He molested at least five of them. The feds investigated him after Gajdusek wrote glowingly of man/ boy sex in his studies in Micronesia, and strongly suggested he was the recipient of it. I read the passages that describe these acts and they are sickening.

One of his victims got him to admit that he was a pedophile during a phone conversation. Gajdusek only served a year and a half in prison. He died a few years ago.

Mercy your last post is firming up what I have been pondering since posting on this thread....these physicians are infinitely more dangerous in many ways than your garden variety pedo's because it appears to me that there are few safeguards in place that allow them to be easily tracked and prevented from practicing again.

I am trying to wrap my brain around the licensing system for medical professionals and when the perp can be reinstated.....

Update on Mel Levine's false advertising on his website calendar, which lists Levine as giving three appearances in November, sponsored by Hirose Associates.

My contact from Hirose Associates on February 25 said,
"The ones in November should not appear on his website at all, since we had cancelled them and severed all ties with him at that point. I will let Jack know right away, and maybe he will able to let him know of this false representation. It is very bad for his to display that, knowing he did not present on those dates. To me, it looks like he is desperate to show credibility."

They must have contacted Levine, because those appearances have been scrubbed from Levine's website as of today.

Hirose Associates sure moved fast on this one. Just goes to show how fast people are trying to get away from their association with Levine.
