True story, I had a potential client who beat the everlovingout of his girlfriend. So, I didn't take him as a client. End of story. Attorneys generally get a choice!!! (Unless it's a public defender, but this guy is not a public defender.) That said, every defendant needs a good lawyer to provide them with a vigorous defense (regardless of whether they deserve one or not)--that's the only way the system works. And if someone is inadequately defended, that opens up the door to later appeals.
Defense attorneys are built different. I could never defend someone like this. I wouldn't be able to sleep at night if I helped to put someone like Jake back on the street. You have to respect people who can do it, because without them innocent people would go away for crimes they didn't commit and/or the guilty wouldn't get put away at all as a result of being unable to access their legal right to be defended adequately. You need good defense attorneys to make sure that the state puts on an adequate case before someone gets locked up. The state can't do that without defense attorneys to push back.
Defense attorneys need to be there to make sure the system works fairly and the prosecution does their job.

some defense attorneys are just trying to make a living for their own family, and are fully willing to take on such clients.
