The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs)

I believe it's incorrect that his face was unrecognizable. Don't know if there are photos but he died in hospital.

How sad.

If he stopped a car to borrow a jack, doesn't that imply he had a vehicle? If this is true, it seems the police in 1956 couldn't trace the car back to whoever 'Earl' really was.

An unidentified man in his late 30's who had been drinking heavily, according to a coroner's autopsy, was run down and killed on the Ridge Route three miles south of Gorman last Saturday morning as he stumbled across the highway attempting to stop motorists to borrow a jack to repair a flat tire. The victim, according to California Highway Patrol, was dead on arrival at Newhall hospital. He was described as being about 35, stocky, with a mole on his chin. dark brown hair, and light eyes. The Highway Patrol said that the victim's name might be "Earl," and that he possibly lived at : a hotel at 27th and Long Beach, That was the only information the investigating officers could glean from Gerald Manning, owner and driver of the car in which the victim was passenger, and an Otis Barnes, another passenger.

Both said they knew the victim only slightly. Investigation revealed that the victim had gotten out of the car after it had blown a tire and gone onto the road to flag down cars in an effort to borrow a jack, He succeeded in stopping truckdriver Cecil McMahan, 5840, Jillson, who said the victim appeared very drunk to him, McMahan had no jack, but said he warned the victim to stay off the highway, and then drove off. After he had gone about 30 yards, he said he heard the screeching of brakes and a crash, and pulled over. When he went back, he said he found the victim sprawled on the highway, alive, but obviously in critical condition. Driver of the car which struck the victim was William A.

Barrett, 29-year-old service station attendant of 2215 Crawford, Altadena. He was not held, since all witnesses said the victim was at fault and the accident unavoidable..
